2019 Tribe Football – Week 2 Press Conference

From the Laycock Center in Williamsburg,
welcome to TribeAthletics.TV and football media day. Hello again everyone
this is Jay Colley with head football coach at William & Mary, Mike London,
and first of all coach congratulations on the victory over Lafayette on
Saturday. Thank you, appreciate it. It was always great to get the first win of
the first game of the season, so we’re excited about it and now we’re on to, you
know, getting ready for our next opponent which is very good Virginia team. It is
Virginia this weekend Friday night as a matter of fact at 8 o’clock. Let’s talk
about the three phases of football. Were you satisfied offensively, first of all,
in your team? You know we did some good things. Obviously we struggled down in a
red zone a little bit, kind of slow start in the first half, but second half we put
some points up on the board. We have explosive plays. We had guys making plays,
and so you know we just got to be consistent when you get down in that red
zone territory to come up with touchdowns rather than feel goals. So that
was good defense. I thought we did a good job particularly second half again
with the turnovers, a lot of turnovers there and opportunities. And special
teams wise, as a return game and in covering game, we did a did a good job as
well. so we got to get better. I mean you always want to improve from the the
mental errors – you know the penalties that sometimes you know you can do
without. We’ve got to improve those things, the communication. But all in all, you
know when you get a W, you score 30 points, you get four turnovers,
six sacks and things like that it’s a good day for you. So what did
you say at halftime, coach, to come out and outscore Lafayette 24-0 in the
third quarter? It’s just it was a matter more about like us and executing that
the game plan and and you know that that’s what it turned into. And you know
our kids they did a great job coming out and executing you know to the detail of
what we we practice all weekend and that’s it was basically it.
Before we talk about, let’s talk about Hollis Mathis, a young
man that had a wonderful game, set some William & Mary records. He was the CAA
Rookie of the Week. Talk about his play. You know for a young guy he’s got a
tremendous amount of confidence. He is, you know, he’s got it and was always
constantly trying to learn how to be a better quarterback. And a great thing in
the quarterback room is the other quarterbacks are trying to help each other. Teddy Hefter, Shon Mitchell,
they do all the all those things to try to get him ready as well so it’s a
selfless room and we want to try to get get him playing his best could.
Talk about the stats but but for him to
demonstrate the ability to take a third and short and make it go or third and
long and get us a first down was impressive. And so now you know he’s learning that you know sometimes you stay in the pocket when to go down
but he’ll get better as a player and so we’re excited about his opportunities. We
now know now while you did not answer the question who is going to be your
starting quarterback you started all four of them last week. Well that was a
that was a game plan you know and now you know we will have an opportunity to play both of them again, at least two of them. Again perhaps you know who we’ll start but you
know Kilton will play and we’ll just try to do some things
that play to both of their strengths. And as the season goes on, as games go on, as
opportunities go on, then we’ll allow the the play of who’s doing well
and who’s playing well be the deciding factor. Let’s talk about the
opposition this week, it’s the Cavaliers in Charlottesville a place you’re very
familiar with. What kind of talent does UVA have this season? They very good talent
they they have guys that have demonstrated that they can do it at a
high level, All-ACC performers. You know they have a good
football team and there’s some skill that they have that can can go the
distance in the kicking game. The return game is excellent. Defensively they
come after you in a lot of different ways and offensively so many formations, they try to you know outflank you and run the ball and they have a quarterback
themselves. The have excellent, excellent players and so we’ll have our work cut out for us. But you know we look forward to going up and
playing an FBS opponent in state. Two questions, maybe they’ll
coincide. Short week – how’s the preparation what’s the game plan on that
and the second part of that is what are keys to a victory on the road? Yep, you
know the short week is always tough. You have to adjust to it. It’s just
the way it is. Normally our kids have Monday off dedicated to our academic
days, so we had to practice on Monday and know so with the weeks shortening and
you know you try to put your game plan in the best you can and get some guys
healed up. We’re gonna have some players that are back that missed this
last game so you know we’re excited about it. Keys for us, obviously,
you know they do so many things offensively that we have to make sure
that we know what we’re in, we’re in position, we’re ready to go. They have a tremendous quarterback that can get it done.
We need to keep the ball in front of us because they’ll take vertical shots
offensively. They like to put pressure you know and I would
imagine whether it’s Hollis or Kilton that they’re going to bring
pressure so we’re going to be able to handle that and you know and make plays, keep the ball moving. And special teams wise, they’ve got a
great returner. He does a fantastic job. He’s taking kick returns back, punts back. He’s done a lot of good things special teams wise. We’re going to have to do a great job covering and then making sure that we know where they are, and then respond to that
with with a game plan that will hopefully minimize a field position
issues. Good luck Friday night, thanks coach.
Thank you, appreciate it.
