2019 Tribe Football: Week 9 Press Conference – Nick Wimmer

From the Laycock Center in Williamsburg,
welcome to TribeAthleticsTV and football media day. Hello to everyone,
this is Jay Colley. With us is the starting center for the Tribe,
Nick Wimmer. And first of all, Nick, thanks for joining us today. Thanks for having
me. A three-year starter at cente,r you have been banged up this season. I know
it’s been a little bit frustrating for you. How are you feeling now? I feel great,
I’m healthy. I had a couple surgeries, it’s in the past behind me so I just
really focused on getting healthy and perfecting my craft, and I feel good. So I
don’t think folks realize the commitment for a Division I athlete in any sport,
particularly on that offensive line, you got a lot of things to be concerned
about. Let’s talk about your position, first of all. Are you the guy that calls
the plays and are you the guy that kind of has got the
responsibility of keeping the team a cohesive unit?
I don’t call the plays, we keep that with coach Marion, but I do I have the
responsibility of calling protections. So when we pass
pointing out the Mike and where we want to have, like if we are hot. But really I callprotections, I call the Mike to
tell who were supposed to be blocking – I mean this comes with experience,
really. And I’ve got a great coach, coach Sammis. He’s on top of us. He
helps me a lot. I really think with this new coaching staff my football
IQ has definitely gone up. So it’s easy, well it’s not easy, it’s easy when
you have a good coaching staff. So, Nick, this weekend you’re going home to some
degree out of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. You’re going to have some family
and friends on hand? I do, yeah, I have a lot of people coming to see me. I’m
really excited about it. Not a lot of people make the drive up here, so
it’s pretty close to home, and I’m just excited to play in
front of my family and friends. So we learned just a moment ago that you’re
graduating in December, tell us what you’re majoring in and what are your
plans after graduation? I’m majoring in public policy, so it’s kind of like a
political science degree, but I want to travel and spend some time with some family and
friends over the next however long. Just take a break from responsibilities and
then after that I see myself getting into a government job, maybe
like a research type of a job. But now I really just want to travel, see the
world, take some time off before I have to start making any commitments.
You’re going to see Elon, North Carolina this weekend, so that’s a start to the
world. I’m excited about it, should be a good one. Good luck. Thank you.
