BYU Football – Coordinators’ Corner – October 29, 2018

>>HELLO, ONCE AGAIN, COUGAR NATION. WELCOME INTO THE “COORDINATORS’ CORNER,” BROUGHT TO YOU BY JCW’S, THE BURGER BOYS. BYU 4-4 ON THE SEASON. THREE OCTOBER HOME GAMES NOW COUGS WILL HIT THE ROAD. ON THIS SHOW ED LAMB AND ILAISA TUIAKI. WE ARE BROADCAST ON BYUtv, BYU RADIO, SWELTS THE BYU FOOTBALL FACEBOOK LIVE PAGE AND ESPN 960 A.M. YOU CAN CATCH THE SHOW LIVE AND ON DEMAND AT BYUtv.ORG, BYU RADIO.ORG PLUS THE BYUtv AND RADIO APPS. WE INVITE YOUR QUESTIONS FOR THE COACHES ON SOCIAL MEDIA USING #CCBYU. TO START TODAY’S SHOW, SPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATOR, LINEBACKERS COACH AND ASSISTANT HEAD COACH ED LAMB WITH US. NIU WINNING SATURDAY. NOT A GREAT OFFENSIVE DAY. BUT THE TURNOVER KEPT BYU OUT OF THE RED ZONE. TOUGH TO WIN WITH SIX POINTS. THAT WAS THE SCENARIO ON SATURDAY.>>YEP. YOU SAID IT WELL. VERY DISAPPOINTING TO NOT GET THE VICTORY. CRUSHING. WE FEEL IF WE DO OUR JOBS KREGTLY AND WELL WE SHOULD LEAD THE BOYS TO VICTORY AND IT DIDN’T HAPPEN.>>BOUNCING AROUND. THE END OF THE GAME, BYU MAKES A PRUDENT CALL TO PUNT NEAR MIDFIELD. ON FOURTH AND 4, THAT WORKED OUT. DEFENSE DID A JOB. BYU GETTING THE BALL BACK NEEDING A FIELD GOAL, MAYBE 50 YARDS. I’M SURE YOU FELT THE STRATEGY WAS ABOUT TO PAY OFF.>>ABSOLUTELY. I HEARD THE BOOS. THE FANS WANTED TO GO FOR IT. CREDIT THEM FOR THE PUNT, REALLY, WAS THE DIFFERENCE. GOT US INTO FOURTH AND FIVE. THAT WAS NOT GOOD ODDS FOR US TO COMPLETE THAT FOURTH AND FIVE. PIPPED THEM DEEP AND WHEN THEY RIPPED OFF THE 56-YARDER, THAT PUT US CLOSER TO OUR OWN 35 RATHER THAN THE R50. USUAL LU EXPECT TO GET POSSESSION ON A THREE AND OUT NEAR THE 50 YARD LINE. DIDN’T GET THAT DONE.>>THE PUNTER DID A GOOD JOB.>>CORRECT DECISION. IT LANDED ON THE 4 YARD LINE. BOUNCED ON THE FLOOR AND THEN TOOK A TURN OUT. HAD IT TIP THE PYLON, ONE INCH MORE TOWARD THE END ZONE, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN CALLED A TOUCHBACK. THAT WAS A GREAT JOB BY THEIR PUNTER TO GET IT DOWN THAT TIGHT.>>BYU DEFENSE DID A GREAT JOB TO HAVE ONE POSSESSION TO WIN IT. NIU AVERAGED LESS THAN A YARD PER PLAY IN THE FOURTH QUARTER. KEEP YOURSELF WITH A CHANCE TO WIN IT.>>EXACTLY. THAT WAS AN ODDS THING. EVERYONE ON THE COACHING STAFF WAS IN LOCKSTEP.>>THEY GO TO A SEASON HAWAII AGAINST HAWAII IN PLAY SUCCESS RATE TO A SEASON LOW AGAINST NIU. IT IS A GOOD GROUP.>>THEY SURE ARE. AS COACHES, WE STRIVE TO GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE. NIU’S DEFENSE PLAYED WITH A LOT OF EMOTION, A LOT OF SUCCESS. THEY RUSHED THE PASSER REALLY WELL. THEY GOT INTO OUR BACKFIELD. THEY PUT A LOT OF GUYS IN THE RUNNING GAME AND ABLE TO BOTTLE UP THE RUNS. OTHER TIMES I THOUGHT THE RUSHING GAME WAS GOING REALLY WELL AND IT WASN’T CONSISTENT ENOUGH. THE BIGGEST THING WAS THE MISSED OPPORTUNITIES THERE. WE HAD A FIRST AND 10 IN THE HIGH RED ZONE WHERE WE DIDN’T COME AWAY WITH A FIELD GOAL. WE HAD TO TRY A 51-YARDER WITHIN RANGE, BUT RANGE IS A FUNNY WORD. A HALF COURT SHOT IN BASKETBALL IS IN RANGE, BUT THE PERCENTAGE GOES DOWN. GOSH, I WISH WE WOULD HAVE HIT THAT 51-YARDER. WOULD HAVE BEEN THE GAME WINNER. WE HAD FIRST AND GOAL ON THE 5 AND MORE MIS-EXECUTION.>>WE KNOW NIU PLAYED SOME GOOD TEAMS AND PLAYED THEM WELL. UTAH IS A GOOD TEAM AND THEY STRUGGLED TO SCORE. PLAYED A TOUGH SCHEDULE AND THEY HEAD BACK INTO THEIR LEAGUE 4-0. THEY ARE PROVING THAT YOU DON’T HAVE TO HAVE THE MOST PROLIFIC OFFENSE IN THE WORLD TO WIN FOOTBALL GAMES WHICH IS WHAT THEY ARE DOING RIGHT NOW PRIMARILY ON DEFENSE.>>YEAH. THAT’S RIGHT. TALK ABOUT ODDS. THE ODDS ARE HAVING FOUR DOWNS, ODDS WERE WE WERE GOING TO WIN THAT GAME. EVERYTHING WAS SHAPING UP TO BE A DEFENSIVE VICTORY, OFFENSE DO WHAT IS NECESSARY AND FOUR DOWNS A LOT OF DOWNS WHEN YOU KNOW YOU HAVE IT, NEEDING A FIELD GOAL, TOUCHDOWN WOULD HAVE BEEN BONUS. OUR OFFENSE DID EVERYTHING THAT WAS NEEDED TO WIN A DEFENSIVE GAME. SO DID THEIR OFFENSE. THEY ENDED UP WINNING. THE ONE THING WE DID THEY DIDN’T DO IS TRURN IT OVER.>>THE ONE TURNOVER CAME ON BYU’S FINAL LOOK. WHAT DID YOU AND ZACH SEE OR NOT SEE ON THE PICK?>>YEAH. COACH RODERICK AND ZACH WOULD CHARACTERIZE IT IN A MORE DETAILED WAY, BUT IT LOOKED TO ME LIKE SOMETHING THAT HAD BEEN THERE EARLIER IN THE GAME. WHEN THEY GOT INTO THAT SITUATION, THEY WERE IN A DIFFERENT DEFENSE. IT WAS A CROSSING ROUTE AND THE UNDERNEATH COVERAGE GOT UNDERNEATH IT LATE. IT CAN LOOK OPEN FROM THE FRONT SIDE, ESPECIALLY EARLY IN THE GAME WHEN THE DEFENSE IS MORE AGGRESSIVE. THEY GOT UNDERNEATH THE ROUTE.>>DATING BACK TO BRONCO MENDENHALL ERA, BYU WON 17 STRAIGHT GAMES LEADING AT HALFTIME. THAT STREAK ENDED ON SATURDAY. FOUR CONSECUTIVE GAMES THE POEPTS HAVE SCORED TOUCHDOWNS ON THEIR FIRST POSSESSION OF THE SECOND HALF. HAS IT FELT LIKE THAT TO YOU. IT IS INTERESTING BYU FROM THE START OF GAMES HAVE BEEN REALLY GOOD AND START OF SECOND HALF SCORING FOR THE OTHER SIDE RIGHT NOW.>>THAT IS REALLY GOOD — IT IS SOMETHING WE LOOK AT, WHEN THE SCORES HAPPEN, WHEN THE BREAKDOWNS HAPPEN. A COUPLE OF THINGS. AS COACHES WE HAVE TO TRY TO DO OUR BEST JOB OF DETERMINING WHETHER ADJUSTMENTS ARE MADE BY THE OPPONENT OR WHETHER OUR TEAM IS MAKING MORE MISTAKES IN THOSE CRITICAL AREAS. IN THIS PARTICULAR GAME IT WAS A MISTAKE-FILLED DRIVE THERE. SO THAT IS NOT TO SAY THAT IS ALWAYS THE CASE. THERE ARE A LOT OF TIMES WHEN THE OPPONENT MAKES A BETTER ADJUSTMENT AND WE HAVE TO COUNTERPUNCH AND TRY TO COME BACK. THERE WASN’T A LOT OF MARGIN FOR ERROR. THEIR OFFENSE STAYED WITH WHAT THEY DID. THERE WERE NO ADJUSTMENTS. WE HAD SOME ILL-TIMED MISTAKES ON THAT DRIVE.>>IT STARTED WITH A KICKOFF OUT OF BOUNDS. YOU NEVER WANT TO SEE, STATING THE OBVIOUS.>>THAT WAS REALLY IN HINDSIGHT, I MEAN, OBVIOUSLY, WE DIDN’T CALL THE KICK OUT OF BOUNDS. BUT IN HINDSIGHT, PUTTING THEM IN EXTRA 10 YARDS OF FIELD POSITION WAS HURTFUL ON THAT PARTICULAR DRIVE. THAT WAS THEIR LONGEST DRIVE.>>AND THEIR LONE SCORING DRIVE. GENERALLY WHEN BYU HOLDS A TEAM SCORELESS IN THREE QUARTERS THEY WIN. DIDN’T TURN OUT THAT WAY ON SATURDAY. HEADING INTO A BREAK. IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS FOR COACH LAMB, SEND THEM IN ON #CC BYU ON>>DINNER AFTER THE GAME AT JCW’S INCLUDES SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY, BURGERS TO SHAKES, WINGS TO SALADS. BYU SUDDENLY 2/3 OF THE WAY THROUGH THE REGULAR SEASON. COUGS4-4. KALANI SITAKE 17-17 FOR HIS TENURE. THIS SATURDAY NIGHT BYU PLAYS AT BOISE STATE, PLAYING FOR A FIRST WIN ON THE BLUE TURF. COUGARS ARE 0-4 ALL TIME THERE. ED LAMB WITH US NOW. COACH LAMB, TAKING AWAY LAST YEAR’S SEASON ENDER VERSUS HAWAII, THERE WAS NO GAME TO FOLLOW, BYU IS 1-6 AFTER WINS IN THE LAST TWO SEASONS. IT IS HARD TO GET ON A ROLL. WHAT DO YOU SEE IN TERMS OF A TENDENCY OR ISSUE YOU HAVE TRIED TO ADDRESS OR NEED TO ADDRESS. IS IT JUST FOOTBALL?>>OVER TIME WE ALWAYS TRY TO SUSTAIN SUCCESS. THAT IS PROBABLY THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN FOOTBALL GENERALLY GET A VERY MOTIVATED TEAM OFF OF A LOSS. I THINK ONE THING THAT COACHES HAVE TO DO, IT IS OUR OUR JOB TO LOOK AT EXAMPLES LIKE THAT BUT NOT OVERREACT. AND SO ON ONE HAND I’LL SAY, THAT’S NOT A SURPRISING STAT FOR A .500 TEAM. AND THAT IS WHAT WE’VE BEEN OVER THE LAST THREE YEARS. IT IS UNACCEPTABLE. KWEZ NOT WHETHER OR NOT IT HAS BEEN ACCEPTABLE OR GOOD ENOUGH, BUT CAN WE GET BETTER, CAN WE IMPROVE. THERE ARE A LOT MORE VARIABLES THAN, SAY, GOSH, AFTER EVERY TIME WE WIN THE COACHES ARE TOO EASY ON THE PLAYERS OR MAYBE THE PLAYERS ARE TOO COMFORTABLE. I THINK THERE ARE SO MANY MORE VARIABLES. I THINK A LOT OF TIMES ON OUR LOSSES, THE MOST COMMON FACTOR IS HOW GOOD WAS THE OPPONENT AND HOW GOOD WAS THE OPPONENT ON THAT DAY. WE LOOK AT THOSE THINGS. WE WANT TO GET BETTER AS COACHES. IF IT DOESN’T HAPPEN, ALL CRITICISM IS JUSTIFIED. ANY CRITICISM TO POINT TO WHY WE HAVEN’T BEEN AS SUCCESSFUL AFTER WINS IT IS JUSTIFIED AND LEGITIMATE.>>THE HOME LOSS ON SATURDAY AND THIS TEAM, WHEN THEY HAVE BEEN BACKED UP AGAIN OR TAKEN A HIT, TENDED TO RESPOND PRETTY WELL IN TOUGH SITUATIONS. YOU HAVE ONE COMING UP SATURDAY IN IDAHO.>>THAT’S RIGHT. THAT IS COMPETITIVE PEOPLE. WE HAVE COMPETITIVE GUYS. IT IS OUR JOB TO TAP INTO THAT. NOT JUST AFTER LOSSES, BUT AFTER WINS. IN A REAL SENSE WE ARE MOVING ON WITH PREPARATION 100% FOR BOISE STATE. IF WE ARE FORTUNATE TO GET A WIN, WE WILL TRY TO STRING TWO IN A ROW.>>MOVING ON TO BOISE, BUT LOOKING BACK TO NIU. HOW DID YOU LOOK AT THE OVERALL SPECIAL TEAMS PERFORMANCE, TAKING THE INDIVIDUAL UNITS ONE BY ONE AND SAYING WHERE IT WAS GOOD ENOUGH AND NOT FOOD ENOUGH?>>NOT GOOD ENOUGH FROM THE LOSS STANDPOINT. THE SPECIAL TEAMS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN A CLOSE GAME. THEIR FINAL PUNT MADE THE DIFFERENCE. WE HAD SOME GOOD SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYS. ONE OF OUR BETTER KICKOFF RETURNS OF THE SEASON. BOTH EXECUTION AND THE RESULT.>>THAT WAS TYLER ALLGEIER?>>RIGHT. THE PUNTER HIMSELF, RHETT ALMOND HAD A SOLID GAME. WE PINNED THEM ON THE 1 YARD LINE ONCE. BUT IN THE FINAL ANALYSIS, ONE MORE FIELD GOAL WINS THE FAME AND OUR OFFENSE WOULD HAVE DONE WHAT WAS NECESSARY TO WIN A DEFENSIVELY STRUGGLE. THOSE HAVE TO HAPPEN. JUST LIKE DEFENSE GETS CREDIT IN A 40 SOMETHING TO 40 SOMETHING VICTORY FOR GETTING THE STOP THAT MATTERED, A FIELD GOAL WOULD HAVE MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE THERE.>>12 YEARS AND A DAY SINCE BYU’S A-YARD FIELD GOAL. WE EXPECT SKYLER SOUTHAM TO BE THE LONG LEG. HE HAS GONE O-2 OUTSIDE 50, BUT THE DISTANCE IS THERE?>>THE DISTANCE IS THERE. MY CONFIDENCE IN HIM IS THERE. THE TV ANNOUNCER WILL TYPICALLY ASK ME, WHAT IS RANGE? I HAVE A HARD — WHAT IS RANGE? IS IT 80%? I KNOW WHERE HE IS 90%, 80%, OUTSIDE OF 50 YARDS THE RANGE IS THERE, BUT THE MARGIN FOR ERROR ON THE TRAJECTORY OR THE ANGLE BECOMES DIFFERENT OUTSIDE OF NOO 50.>>HOW DID HE EXPLAIN THE MISS?>>I THOUGHT HE DID A SMART THING. HE PLAYED FOR HIS DRAW. NINE OUT OF 10 TIMES HE HAS A DRAW. ON THAT KICK THE BALL DID NOT DRAW. HE PUT IT UP AT THE RIGHT UPRIGHT. HIS ANGLE WAS ONE TO TWO DEGREES OFF. IT WAS HEADED FOR ABOUT ONE FOOT RIGHT OF THE RIGHT UPRIGHT AND THAT IS WHERE IT STAYED.>>THERE WAS A MUFFED PUNT WITH A RECOVERY FOR BYU?>>YEAH. WE RECOVERED OUR OWN MUFFED PUNT. AFFIRMATIVE. IT WAS A POOR DECISION TO TRY TO FIELD THAT OVER THE HOULDER AND BREAK A TACKLE SIMULTANEOUSLY. IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A FAIR CATCH. AN AMAZING EFFORT TO GET THAT BALL BACK. HE WAS POUNCING AND SCRAMBLING ON ALL FOURS AND REALLY, I HAVE TO COACH HIM ON THE MOMENT. COACH HIM BETTER GOING INTO THAT MOMENT. COACH HIM AFTER THE MOMENT AND MAKE SURE THERE IS A CORRECTION AND PRAISE HIM FOR THE EFFORT TO GET IT BACK.>>YOUR LINEBACKERS, TOP TWO TACKLERS IN THE GAME SIONE TAKITAKI AND ISAIAH KAUFUSI. HOW WOULD YOU SAY ISAIAH IS COMING ALONG IN HIS FIRST SUSTAINED REACTION?>>IN MY MIND HE IS THE MOST IMPROVED PLAYER ON THE TEAM FROM SPRING PRACTICE. I DIDN’T ANTICIPATE HIM PLAYING A BIG ROLE. I THOUGHT HE WAS NOT READY. OVER THE SUMMERTIME HE HAS A LONG, LEAN BODY. IT WAS HARD TO GAIN WEIGHT. I FELT LIKE HE NEEDED TO GAIN WEIGHT TO BE MORE EFFECTIVE. HE GAINED SOME. HE OUTPERFORMED MY EXPECTATIONS. THAT IS DIFFICULT TO DO BECAUSE I’M OPTIMISTIC AND SET HIGH GOALS FOR THE GUYS. HE HAS BEEN AMAZING.>>A WORD ABOUT CORBIN BEFORE THE BREAK. IN DIFFERENT SITUATIONS HE OCCUPIED MORE OF A HYBRID ROLE.>>HE DOES. HIS LENGTH CAN BE A PROBLEM IN PASSING LANES FOR OPPONENTS. SEVERAL TIMES IN THIS PAST GAME IT SHOWED UP AND THE GAME BEFORE AGAINST HAWAII, AGAINST ARIZONA WITH A HEALTHY KHALIL TATE THAT WAS DANGEROUS. HE WAS A MAJOR PROBLEM. HE CAN BE A MAJOR PROBLEM FOR QUARTERBACKS WHEN HE IS IN THAT POSITION. IT IS KIND OF, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE A FEW DIFFERENT WORDS FOR IT, A SPY OR TRIGGER, DROPPING INTO SHORT ZONE BUT HAS THE FREEDOM TO RUSH THE PASSER WHEN THE SITUATION DICTATES.>>COMING UP MORE WITH ED LAMB INCLUDING YOUR QUESTIONS FOR THE COACH USING #CCBYU. IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION, SEND IT IN. THIS IS THE “COORDINATORS’ CORNER”BROUGHT TO YOU BY JCW’S, THE BURGER BOYS. BACK WITH MORE RIGHT AFTER THIS.>>BYU FANS, YOU ARE IN THE “COORDINATORS’ CORNER”BROUGHT TO YOU BY JCW’S, THE BURGER BOYS. BYU AT BOISE STATE SATURDAY. 4-4, TWO WINS AWAY FROM POSTSEASON ELIGIBILITY. ONE WIN HAS TO COME ON THE ROAD. COACH ED LAMB WITH ME. YOU WON 2-3 AWAY FROM HOME. THINK ABOUT THIS TEAM THAT TENDS TO RALLY AWAY FROM LAVELL EDWARDS STADIUM, PERHAPS.>>I THINK SO. I THINK A LOT OF TEAMS PLAY WELL ON THE ROAD. GETTING THE WIN HAS AS MUCH TO DO AS THE MATCHUP ITSELF. THERE ARE FEWER DISTRACTIONS ON THE ROAD. I THINK EVERYBODY, THEIR COMPETITIVENESS, COMPETITIVE DESIRE, NATURE, IS HEIGHTENED IN A HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT. GET EXCITED ABOUT HOME GAMES, PLAY IN FRONT OF THE HOME FANS WHICH WE LOVE TO TREAT TO A VICTORY. ON THE ROAD, THERE IS A NEW SET OF CHALLENGES, NEW OPPORTUNITIES.>>THESE GUYS WANT TO WIN IN FRONT OF THEIR HOME FAN. IS THERE ANYTHING ABOUT THE HOME FIELD AS YOU HAVE SEEN IT, ARE GUYS MORE FOCUSED OR TOO TIGHT? I’M WONDERING WHAT HAPPENS AT HOME LATELY?>>I ALWAYS APPRECIATE YOUR QUESTIONS. YOU WORK HARD TO FIND PATTERNS AND LOOK AT THE STATS. CERTAINLY THOSE THINGS ARE UP FOR DISCUSSION. FOR THE MOST PART PATTERN WISE AND GENERALIZING AN ANSWER, IT IS REALLY ABOUT THE EXECUTION OF THAT PARTICULAR DAY.>>THAT OPPONENT ON THAT DAY.>>THAT OPPONENT. THAT MATCHUP. THERE WAS NOTHING DIFFERENT ABOUT OUR APPROACH, OUR MEETING SCHEDULE. THE HEAD COACH’S SPEECH FROM THE HAWAII WIN TO THE LOSS THIS LAST WEEK AGAINST NORTHERN ILLINOIS. ON BOTH OCCASIONS IT IS A SOLID WEEK OF PRACTICE, A MOTIVATED TEAM, PLAYERS THAT WOULD GIVE ANYTHING TO GIVE THE HOME FANS A VICTORY AND GIVE EACH OTHER A VICTORY. WE ARE DISAPPOINTED. AS I SAID BEFORE, NO CRITICISM IS UNWARRANTED OR INVALID, BUT IN OUR ESTIMATION IT HAS A LOT MORE TO DO WITH THE EXECUTION ON THAT DAY.>>I CAME UP ON THE BYU BROADCAST CREW IN THE 1990s WHEN MOST SATURDAY GAMES WERE AFTERNOON GAMES. I SPENT A LOT OF SATURDAY AFTERNOONS WALKING THE SIDELINE WITH THE HEAD SET ON. WE WERE BACK THERE LAST SATURDAY. MID AFTERNOON GAME SATURDAY IN LATE FALL. IT FELT GREAT. THE RESULT WASN’T GREAT, BUT IT FELT LIKE THAT IS WHAT FOOTBALL IS SUPPOSED TO FEEL LIKE.>>IT IS A SHAME. FROM THIS PERSPECTIVE, WHAT IS THE HEAD COACH DOING NOT LEADING TO VICTORIES AT HOME OR SOMETHING LIKE THIS. ON THIS PARTICULAR GAME, OTHER GAMES WOULD BE DIFFERENT, ON THIS PARTICULAR GAME THE GUYS ON DEFENSE EXECUTED AND PERFORMED WELL. IF PEOPLE THINK IOWA OR UTAH HAS DEFENSE, BYU OUTPERFORMED AGAINST A COMMON OPPONENT, AGAINST THAT TEAM. THAT PART OF THE TEAM WAS READY AND PLAYED HARD AND IN MY ESTIMATION, THE OFFENSE AND SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYED THEIR GUTS OUT, TOO. GIVE SOME CREDIT TO THE OPPONENT AND UNDERSTAND IT IS ABOUT EXECUTION AND MATCHUPS ON BOTH DAYS. WE ALL FEEL THE WEIGHT OF THE LOSS AS COACHES MORE THAN ANYBODY.>>UNDERSTANDABLY. LET’S HIT A COUPLE OF THINGS BEFORE WE GO TO TWITTER. WHAT IS UP WITH BUCH PAU’U. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT HIS CURRENT SITUATION AND FROM HERE TO THE END?>>WITHOUT GETTING TOO MUCH INTO BUTCH’S PERSONAL SITUATION, THE EASIEST WAY TO SAY IT IS HE IS NOT QUITE 100% YET. THE REALITY IS ON A TEAM FULL OF GUYS COMPETING FOR PLAYING TIME, IT IS DIFFICULT TO WIN AND EARN SIGNIFICANT PLAYING TIME WITHOUT BEING 100%. WE DON’T HAVE THAT MANY PLAYERS ON THE TEAM THAT ARE SO MUCH BETTER THAN EVERYBODY ELSE THEY CAN GO OUT AT WHATEVER THE PERCENTAGE AND BUTCH COULD TELL YOU MORE THAN I COULD, BUT IT IS NOT 100%%. HE IS NOT BACK TO 100% STRENGTH. HE IS CONTRIBUTING 100% LEADERSHIP, A FANTASTIC ATTITUDE. HE IS NOT HAPPY WITH THE DECISIONS THAT ME OR THE COACHING STAFF IS MAKING ABOUT HIS PLAYING TIME, BUT 100% SUPPORTIVE OF HIS TEAMMATES. THAT IS WHY I HAVE SO MUCH RESPECT FOR HIM.>>HE PLAYED HURT, WITH INJURY AND REPAIR. HE HAS HAD A PHYSICAL SITUATION WE ARE TALKING ABOUT?>>HE HAS. HIS SITUATION IS THAT HE IS NOT 100%. HE IS NOT AFRAID TO PLAY AT LESS THAN 100% AND READY AFTER EVERY MOMENT. IF YOU SEE HIM AT ANY MOMENT, HELMET ON, CHIN STRAP READY TO GO, MOUTHPIECE IN. READY TO GO.>>DIDN’T GET IN AGAINST NIU?>>NO. THERE WAS A DESIGN TO GET HIM IN. BASED ON A ROTATION, HOW LONG THE DIRECTORY. THEY HAD TWO LONG DRIVES AND A DIFFERENT ROTATION ON THAT PARTICULAR DRIVE.>>ON TWITTER, HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE YOUR TEAM AFTER A LOSS? OTHER THAN GAME PLANNING, WHAT GETS TOLD TO A TEAM?>>GREAT QUESTION. I DON’T MEAN TO ANSWER IN A CAVALIER WAY. MOTIVATION IS A LONG TERM, IN MY PERSPECTIVE, MOTIVATION IS A LONG-TERM TOOL THAT COACHES USE. THE GREAT HALFTIME SPEECH, THE GREAT PREGAME SPEECH, THEY DON’T WORK. REASONING IT OUT, IT DOESN’T WORK. IF YOU HAVE A GREAT HALFTIME SPEECH, YOU HAVE TO HAVE EQUALLY GREAT HALFTIME SPEECHES EVERY GAME. PLAYERS ARE TOO SMART FOR THAT OR HAVE AN UP-AND-DOWN PERFORMANCE OF A COACH. THE THING IS TRUE OF WEEKLY SPEECHES AND MESSAGES. IT IS A LONG-TERM MOTIVATION TO OUTWORK YOUR OPPONENT IN THE WEIGHT ROOM, IN CLASSROOM, TAKE STRESS OUT OF YOUR LIFE, BE A GREAT PERSON. DURING THE SEASON HAVE A MOTIVATIONAL TOOL TO LAST THE TEST OF TIME. NOW, I WILL SAY IT THIS WAY. HAVE WE SUCCEEDED IN DOING THAT? NO. 4-4 IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH. WE HAVE TO IMPROVE. BUT, NO, THE PLAN IS NOT TO HAVE AN AMAZING MOTIVATIONAL APPROACH THIS WEEK.>>LAST THING FOR YOU, COACH LAMB, FOR THIS WEEK, IS BOISE STATE A TEAM THAT CAN RING IT UP? A LOW SCORING GAME IS A RARITY FOR THEM. THEY ARE PUTTING UP THE POINTS RIGHT NOW.>>THEY ARE. THEY ARE FANTASTIC. WHAT A CHALLENGE FOR OUR GUYS. I FEEL WE HAVE GROWN IN THE DEFENSIVE SECONDARY IN THE TIME WE HAVE BEEN HERE. I FEEL LIKE IT IS A BIG CHALLENGE FOR THOSE GUYS, A BIG CHALLENGE FOR OUR PASS RUSHERS. NOT ALWAYS HAD AGAINST ALL OF OUR OPPONENTS THIS YEAR, HAVE NOT ALWAYS HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO RUSH THE PASSER. BOISE STATE WILL CHALLENGE US TO RUSH THE PASSER. WHAT AN OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR BOYS TO PLAY AGAINST ONE OF THE BEST. DEFENSIVELY BOISE STATE HAS BEEN STOUT. THEY HAVE DONE ENOUGH TO WIN AND GAMES THAT HAVE GONE INTO HIGHER SCORING AFFAIRS, MOST IMPORTANTLY, THEY KNOW HOW TO WIN, OFFENSE, DEFENSE, SPECIAL TEAMS. WHAT A CHALLENGE TO GET OUR PLAYERS IN A POSITION TO WIN AND A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR US.>>BOISE HAS BEEN AN EXCELLENT PROGRAM. BYU HAS NOT WON, THEY ARE 1-4. THREE OF THE FOUR LOSSES WERE BY UP WITH POINT. HOPE THEY GIVE THEM A FIGHT ON SATURDAY NIGHT.>>COUNT ON IT. THE BOYS ARE READY TO PLAY AS THEY ARE EVERY WEEK. WE FEEL LIKE AS COACHES WE HAVE A TEAM THAT CAN WIN AND WE NEED TO DO OUR JOB WELL AND LEAD THEM TO VICTORY.>>COACH LAMB, ALWAYS APPRECIATE YOUR INSIGHT.>>COMING UP, ILAISA TUIAKI. WE CONTINUE ON THE “COORDINATORS’ CORNER”BROUGHT TO YOU BY JCW’S THE BURGER BOYS.>>DINNER AFTER THE GAME AT JCW’S INCLUDES SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE. WE ARE IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE “COORDINATORS’ CORNER” BROADCAST. WE WELCOME IN ILAISA TUIAKI. YOUR QUESTIONS FOR COACH TU YAQUI DUCK TUIAKI CAN BE SENT TO #CCBYU. YOU GIVE UP SEVEN POINTS DEFENSIVELY. YOU EXPECT TO WIN. TOUGH ONE TO TAKE THAT WAY, RIGHT?>>THAT WAS TOUGH. IT IS TOUGH TO LOSE WHEN — ANY TIME >>48-47. IS TOUGH TO LOSE.>>I THOUGHT THE KIDS PLAYED HARD ALL THE WAY TO THE END WHEN WE COACH KALANI SITAKE DECIDED TO KICK IT. THAT WAS A TOUGH ONE.>>SOMETHING COACH LAMB TOLD US PRETTY MUCH EVERYONE ON THE HEAD SET FELT THAT WAS RIGHT THING, FOURTH AND FOUR, PUNT AND PIN. YOU GET THE BALL BACK WITH TIME-OUTS AND TWO MINUTES. YOU FIGURE YOU CAN WIN ON A FIELD GOAL AT LEAST.>>I’M NEVER PART OF THAT DISCUSSION AT LEAST AT THAT TIME. THE ONLY THING COACH SITAKE ASKS IS I FEEL GOOD ON DEFENSE. HE SAID I FEEL GOOD ON DEFENSE. THERE WAS A LOT OF — MY BROTHERS ARE ASKING ME AFTER THE GAME AS WELL AS THE CROWD, THERE WERE SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT THAT WAS THE BEST DECISION. HINDSIGHT IS ALWAYS 20/20. THIS TIME I THOUGHT IT WAS THE RIGHT CALL.>>IT CAN GO BOTH WAYS. YOU CAN SAY IT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO TO GO ON FOURTH AND FOUR AND PUNT AND PIN. PUNT AND PIN IS A GOOD STRATEGY, BUT THE PICK ON THE FIRST OFFENSIVE PLAY AND THAT IS YOUR BALL GAME. NIU’S OFFENSE WAS NOT ITS STRONG SUIT. BUT WHAT CONCERNED YOU THE MOST YOU FELT GOOD TAKING AWAY FROM THEM?>>JUST THE RUN GAME. THEY HAVE DONE A REALLY GOOD JOB WITH THE RUN GAME AND QUARTERBACK RUN GAME.>>NOT TO INTERRUPT. SORRY ABOUT THAT. ON THE THREE STRAIGHT WINS AVERAGING 250 PLUS ON THE GROUND. COMING INTO SATURDAY.>>THEY WERE REALLY EFFECTIVE. THEY KNEW THEIR CUP OF TEA WASN’T TO SIT BACK AND LET THE QUARTERBACK THROW THE BALL. IT WAS CONTROL THE RUN GAME, CONTROL THE RUN GAME. SOME OF THE GAMES THEY PLAYED LEADING UP TO US, THEY HAD THE LEAD AND THEY DID A GOOD JOB RUNNING THE BALL, FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD AND PUNTING AND BEING OKAY. WE FELT LIKE WE NEEDED TO STOP THE RUN AND THOUGHT THE BOYS PLAYED HARD AND DID THAT.>>WE HAVE SEEN CORBIN KAUFUSI BEING YOUR X FACTOR HYBRID GUY. HOW DID YOU WANT TO USE HIM AND HOW DO YOU LOOK AT HIM? WHAT IS HE FOR YOU RIGHT NOW?>>WE TALK ABOUT IT EVERY MONDAY REALLY AS A STAFF, THE PLAYER OF THE GAME. WHO IS THE X FACTOR. HE IS UP FOR IT EVERY SINGLE WEEK. REALLY, HE DESERVES IT EVERY WEEK. THERE ARE DEFINITELY GUYS THAT AREN’T NECESSARILY GOING TO GET THAT ACCOLADE BECAUSE OF THE WAY THEY PLAY. CHRIS WILCOX AT CORNER. WE DECIDED TO GO TO A GUY WHO HELD IT DOWN. CORBIN EVERY WEEK IS A CANDIDATE OF PLAYER OF THE WEEK BECAUSE OF THE THINGS HE BRINGS TO THE TABLE >>HE IS MORE THAN A TYPICAL D-END RIGHT NOW?>>YES, HE IS. HE IS JUST IN THE WAY. HE IS JUST IN THE WAY. I THINK WHEN QUARTERBACKS SEE HIM OR WHEN, YOU KNOW, IN THE RUN GAME, HE IS SQUIRMY, IN THE PASS GAME HE IS IN THE WAY. WHEN QUARTERBACKS TRY TO RUN IT IS HARD TO RUN AWAY.>>SATURDAY WAS THE CANCER AWARENESS WEEK GAME. THERE IS CORBIN WITH HIS BRIGHT PINK ARM BRACE, ELBOW BRACE ON. HE IS PLAYING DINGED RIGHT NOW AND DOING A GREAT JOB.>>HE IS. HE IS. HE CAME BACK WITH THAT ELBOW BRACE ON TUESDAY’S PRACTICE. I WASN’T THINKING ABOUT IT. WHEN I LOOKED AT IT, THAT IS JUST CORBIN. IF IT WAS ANY OTHER WEEK OF THE YEAR, IT WOULDN’T HAVE SURPRISED ME HE PICKED A PINK BRACE.>>HE IS CLEARLY NOT ALL THE WAY RIGHT BUT GIVING IT A GO.>>HE IS. THERE IS TALK ABOUT HIM GETTING SURGERY BEFORE OR AFTER. HE AND HIS PARENTS MADE THE DECISION. THEY WERE ADAMANT. I WANT TO PLAY THIS THING THROUGH.>>YOU MENTIONED TALEAULI. THERE IS A PLAY IN THE GAME WHERE ONE OF THE TACKLES IS CHASING DOWN CHILDERS. THAT IS JEDY TUILOMA.>>HE IS ONE OF OUR WALK ON DEFENSIVE TACKLES. WE CALL THEM THE COCKROACHES. THOSE TWO ARE GUYS THAT HAVE BEEN DOING A GREAT JOB, THEY ARE SCOUT TEAM GUYS, THEY RELISH THEIR ROLE. THIS WEEK HAVING GUYS BANGED UP. AUSTIN CHAMBERS WAS BANGED UP. I DIDN’T KNOW HOW COMFORTABLE WE FELT. WE NEEDED TO HAVE THEM READY. WE GOT INTO A SITUATION WHERE WE NEEDED TO ROTATE TO GO FROM ONE PACKAGE TO THE OTHER. WE DID. THE GUY THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO GO IN WASN’T READY. JETTY JUST WENT RUNNING OUT THERE. EXACTLY WHAT YOU SAID. HE COMES POPPING FREE, CHASING THE QUARTERBACK. I WAS HAPPY FOR HIM. HE GOT IN THE GAME IN A MOMENT WHERE IT MATTERED AND DID A GOOD JOB.>>KALANI TOLD ME HE WASN’T SURE HE WOULD START CHYRUS. HOW WORRIED SHOULD WE ABOUT HIM PLAYING ON SATURDAY?>>HE GOT DINGED UP AT PRACTICE. HE CAME BACK AND PRACTICED THURSDAY. LOOKING BACK, I WISH THAT WE WOULD HAVE JUST HELD HIM. I THINK HE WOULD HAVE GOTTEN BACK MORE CONFIDENTLY. THERE IS STILL OPPORTUNITY OR CHANCE HE COULD BE READY, BUT HE COULD HAVE USED THE REST. AND JUST HATE TO PUT A GUY OUT THERE AND GET REINJURED OUT THERE WHEN HE COULD HAVE USED THE REST. THAT IS HIM. HE WAS LOOKING AT ME SIDEWAYS WHEN I TOLD HIM, WHEN WE WERE DOING WALK THROUGHS. ROTATE IN WITH THE FOURS. HE LOOKED ME LIKE I’M PLAYING, RIGHT? HE IS A KID THAT IS TOUGH. HE WANTS TO PLAY. HE WANTS TO CONTRIBUTE. JUST FOR HIS SAKE, LOOKING BACK, I WISH WE WOULD HAVE SAVED HIM.>>ARE YOU OKAY ON NUMBERS AT TACKLE?>>WE ARE. LIKE I SAID, JETTY AND A COUPLE OF GUYS DO A GOOD JOB. THEY ARE BOTH STOUT. THEY ARE NOT AS BIG AS THE OTHER GUYS. WE CALL THEM THE COCKROACHES. THEY ARE INDESTRUCTIBLE. THEY GIVE A GOOD LOOK ON THE SCOUT TEAM AND READY TO PLAY FOR US. I HAVE NO FEAR PUTTING THOSE TWO IN. THEY WILL HOLD GROUND. THAT IS ALWAYS MY FEAR IF FOR A DEFENSIVE LINEMAN TO COME IN AND GET BLOWN UP.>>GIVE GROUND.>>YEAH. GIVE GROUND. THEY HOLD SPACE AND HOLD GROUND AND LET THE BACKERS FLOW.>>NOT OFTEN COCKROACH IS A COMPLIMENT, BUT IT IS HERE.>>THOSE TWO ARE COCKROACHES. THOSE GUYS ARE TOUGH.>>ON THE “COORDINATORS’ CORNER.” WHEN WE COME BACK>>”COORDINATORS’ CORNER”BROUGHT TO YOU BY JCW’S, THE BURGER BOYS. BYU DEFENSIVE LINE COACH AND DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR ILAISA TUIAKI WITH ME UNTIL THE TOP OF THE HOUR. 4-4 BYU VISITING 6-2 BOISE STATE. THE BRONCOS ARE BOWL ELIGIBLE. BYU TWO WINS AWAY FROM GETTING THERE. THAT IS A REASONABLE GOAL AND HOPE TO HIT BF YOU GET 12 GAMES ON YEAR.>>ABSOLUTELY. THAT IS THE GOAL. WHATEVER HAPPENED THESE LAST FEW WEEKS WE HAVE TO GO GET OUR GOAL. TWO MORE.>>LEADING TACKLERS IN THE NIU WERE SIONE TAKITAKI AND ISAIAH KAUFUSI. KAUFUSI COACH LAMB SAID HE DIDN’T KNOW HE WOULD OCCUPY, BUT HE HAS BEEN A GOOD PLAYER.>>HE HAS DONE A GOOD JOB. HE IS A SMART KID. COACH LAMB DID A GOOD JOB WITH HIS DEVELOPMENT. BECOMING MORE PHYSICAL, LOOKING EXACTLY HOW HE DID IN HIGH SCHOOL. HE WAS A GOOD PLAYER IN HIGH SCHOOL. HE IS LOOKING THAT TYPE OF FORM RIGHT NOW.>>WHO ARE THE LINEBACKERS YOU ARE COUNTING ON. IT LOOKS LIKE CORBIN IS ONE OF THEM WHEN YOU OPEN THE GAME THE WAY YOU DO. ISAIAH, SIONE. RIGGS POWELL.>>RIGGS POWELL HAS A ROLE. ADAM PULSIPHER HAS A ROLE. AND LATELY WITH A LOT OF THE TEAMS WE HAVE BEEN PLAYING, WE HAVE PLAYED A LOT OF NICKEL. SO WE USE — >>FOUR TWO FIVE.>>SHELTON.>>IT IS ABOUT ADAPTABILITY. YOU THINK ANDERSON, ZAYNE ANDERSON AND SIONE. IT IS SOMETHING DIFFERENT.>>YEAH. THOSE GUYS HAVE SHOWN UP.>>NIU AVERAGED LESS THAN A YARD PER PLAY IN THE FOURTH QUARTER. THAT IS SOMETHING THAT IS TOUGH TO DO TO KEEP ANY TEAM UNDER A YARD PER PLAY, ESPECIALLY LATE IN THE GAME. YOUR GUYS DID ALL YOU NEEDED TO WIN IT. IT DIDN’T TURN OUT THAT WAY BUT YOUR GUYS PLAYED STRONG TO THE END.>>THEY PLAYED HARD. PHENOMENAL EFFORT. GREAT BELIEF IN BEING ABLE TO MAKE STOPS AND WIN IT. I WISH WE COULD HAVE TAKEN THAT ONE DRIVE BACK, THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE DIFFERENCE ON DEFENSE OR THE DIFFERENCE WE COULD HAVE MADE IN THE GAME AND BEING ABLE TO WIN. WHEN WE LOOKED AT IT AS A STAFF, IT WAS JUST MISTAKES AND JUST NOT BEING IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME. YOU ARE RIGHT. IN THE FOURTH QUARTER, THEY PLAYED REALLY HARD.>>INTERESTINGLY IN THE LAST FOUR GAMES THE OPPONENT HAS SCORED A TOUCHDOWN ON THE FIRST DRIVE IN THE FIRST PLAY OF THE SECOND HALF.>>WE HAVE TO PUT MORE URGENCY ON THAT. WHEN WE COME OUT ON DEFENSE AND GET A STOP. I DON’T LIKE USING THE LANGUAGE OF WE HAVE TO GET A THREE AND OUT. WE JUST HAVE TO GET A STOP. YOU COME OUT AND YOU DON’T GET A THREE AND OUT IT IS ALL NEGATIVE FEELINGS. WE HAVE TO GET A STOP. WE HAVE TO SHOW UP STRAIGHT AFTER HALFTIME.>>THE OFFENSE KNOWS IMPORTANT TO SCORE ON THE FIRST POSSESSION, BUT IF YOU DON’T YOU CAN’T HAVE EVERYONE SAG. THE LAST TIME YOU LOST A 7-6 GAME WAS AT BOISE STATE. BYU GOES UP THERE SATURDAY. YOU ARE A HEAVY UNDERDOG. YOU HAVE BEEN THERE BEFORE. YOU KNOW WHAT IT IS LIKE TO HAVE SOMEONE SAY THERE IS NOT MUCH OF A SHOT. YOU HAVE GOTTEN WINS AT TOUGH PLACES TO PLAY. JUST GO DO IT AGAIN.>>YEAH. WE HAVE TO PLAY WELL IN ALL PHASES. EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT. WE KNOW THAT AS COACHES. WE HAVE TO EXECUTE IN ALL PHASES OF THE GAME. AND I THINK WE DO THAT WE’LL HAVE A GOOD CHANCE LIKE ANY OTHER WEEK.>>IS THERE SOMETHING ABOUT THIS TEAM THAT RESPONDS WELL TO ADVERSITY? IT HAS BEEN TOUGH TO SPRING BACK-TO-BACK WINS. DO YOU FEEL THIS TIME HAS THE CHARACTERISTIC TO REFOCUS?>>IT TRICKLES DOWN. COACH SITAKE FOCUSES ON THAT. A LOT OF DIFFERENT TEAMS, DARK AND DPLOOMY IN THE OFFENSE AS WELL AS PRACTICE FIELD. HE DOES A GOOD JOB HELPING THE KIDS GET OVE IT, UNDERSTAND WHAT IS IMPORTANT. POINT OUT WHAT WE NEED TO GET BETTER AT AND IMPROVE. GET THEM REFRESHED AND STARTING OVE AGAIN.>>THE NIU GAME GAI YOU A SATURDAY 1:30 KICKOFF. I WISH THERE WERE MORE FANS IN THE STANDS. NOT YOUR THING TO WORRY ABOUT. YOU ARE WORRIED TO GIVE THE FANS A WIN TO SEE. YOUR HOME WINS HAVEN’T BEEN PLENTIFUL. BUT LIKE COACH LAMB SAID YOU CAN’T OVERGENERALIZE. SAYING WE ARE NOT DOING SOMETHING WELL. YOU WANT THE FANS TO COME SUPPORT YOU WEEK IN, WEEK OUT.>>THAT IS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. I’M SURE COACH LAMB PUT IT THE RIGHT WAY. WE’VE GOT TO WIN. IT IS NOT SPECIFIC TO HOME OR AWAY. WE HAVE TO WIN. PLAY WELL. DO A BETTER JOB. COACH HARDER. GET THEM READY TO PLAY.>>FALL FOOTBALL IS WHERE IT’S AT ON A DAY LIKE SATURDAY. IT HAD TO BE GREAT ON THERE AT 1:30 IN THE AFTERNOON.>>IT WAS SO NICE. VERY, VERY NICE. A WIN WOULD HAVE MADE IT A LOT BETTER.>>HEADING TO BREAK ON THE “COORDINATORS’ CORNER.” YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA QUESTIONS #CCBYU FOR ILAISA TUIAKI AS WE CONTINUE LIVE ON BYUtv, BYU RADIO AND ESPN 960. BACK AFTER THIS.>>DINNER AFTER THE GAME AT JCW’S INCLUDES BURGERS TO WINGS, SHAKES TO SALADS. JCW’S, QUALITY AND A LOT OF IT. DEFENSIVE LINE COACH D.-COORDINATOR ILAISA TUIAKI WITH US FOR A FEW MORE MOMENTS. THIS TIME OF YEAR MOST TEAMS ARE PLAYING FOR THE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS. BYU PLAYS FOR OTHER THINGS. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS AND CHALLENGES OF INDEPENDENCE AT THIS TIME OF YEAR FOR YOU AND YOUR SQUAD?>>IF YOU ARE PLAYING WELL, ESPECIALLY WITH THE SCHEDULE WE HAVE, YOU HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY FOR SOMETHING BIG. LOOKING AT OUR SCHEDULE, IF WE COME OUT OF THE FIRST COUPLE OF MONTHS UNTAINTED WE WOULD BE LOOKING AT SOMETHING REALLY BIG. BEING INDEPENDENT ALLOWS YOU TO PLAY FOR THAT. FOR US, AFTER THE SCHEDULE IS DONE, UTAH SOMETIMES FALLS IN THE BEGINNING OR THE END. AT LEAST THIS YEAR, THAT IS ONE THAT IS IN FRONT OF US WE NEED TO BE PREPARED FOR. THEY ARE PLAYING WELL RIGHT NOW.>>WHAT WAS MORE TELLING ABOUT YOUR TEAM IN GETTING TO 3-1 THAT MAYBE HASN’T BEEN THERE IN AS GREAT A QUANTITY IN THE LAST FOUR GAMES 1-3 FOR YOU. HOW DO YOU SEE THAT?>>WE HAVE TAKEN SOME LUMPS. LOSING GUYS HERE AN THERE.>>PERSONNEL WISE.>>IT IS NICE TO HAVE EVERYONE YOU STARTED FALL CAMP WITH. YOU HAVE TO SHUFFLE THINGS AROUND AND MOVE TO DIFFERENT SPOTS. THINK ONE OF THE WEEKS, THE SHORT WEEK WAS TOUGH FOR US TO GET BACK FROM A LOSS EARLY IN THE MORNING AND GET A QUICK TURN AROUND AND GET READY FOR A TEAM THAT HAD A BYE.>>WE ARE TALKING THE WASHINGTON TO UTAH STATE TURN AROUND?>>YEAH. THAT TURN AROUND IS TOUGH. YOU LOSE KIDS. THE MOMENTUM, RIGHT. WHEN YOU ARE WINNING AND PLAYING WELL, EVERYTHING IS GOOD. BUT LOSSES CAN KIND OF, YOU KNOW, AS A COACHING STAFF, LOSSES WILL ALWAYS MAKE YOU LOOK AT EVERY LIDDLE DETAIL. SOMETIMES YOU ATTRIBUTE IT TO THE LOSS, SOMETIMES YOU DON’T. BUT YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT EVERYTHING MORE DETAILED AND FIGURE OUT WHETHER THIS IS PLAYING INTO THE WAY YOUR KIDS ARE PLAYING, YOUR LOSSES OR DOESN’T MATTER. WHEN YOU ARE WINNING, IT DOESN’T MATTER. BUT WHEN YOU ARE LOSING, YOU CAN OVERANALYZE A LITTLE BIT. BUT ALSO I THINK IT IS JUST PLAYING SOME GOOD TEAMS.>>PART OF IT IS PERSONNEL RELATED IN LOSING ZAYNE. HAVE YOU SETTLED INTO THE NICKEL PHILOSOPHY FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE SCHEDULE? OR IS IT GAME OR PERSONNEL DEPENDENT?>>I THINK IT IS GAME DEPENDENT OR PERSONNEL DEPENDENT. WE WILL RELY ON BACKERS AS WELL AS DEFENSIVE LINEMEN. IF WE FEEL LIKE WE CAN STOP THE RUN AND HOLD THE EDGE AS WELL AS GET SPEED WITH NICKELS, WE WILL DO THAT. IT DEPENTDS ON WHAT WE SEE FROM FILM.>>FROM SOCIAL MEDIA ON TWITTER. WHAT GOES INTO YOUR PLANS TO SUBSTITUTE OR PLATOON SO FREQUENTLY PLAY TO PLAY?>>NORMALLY WHEN THEY SUB, WE SUB. NORTHERN ILLINOIS WENT FROM 12 PERSONNEL TO 10 PERSONNEL. BACK AND FORTH. THAT IS THE WAY WE DO IT. THIS LAST WEEK WE HAD THE BEAST PACKAGE, 3D-TACKLES AND DO D-ENDS. THERE ARE ONLY A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF CALLS IN THE BEAST PACKAGE. IF WE ARE GETTING STUCK IN THE BEAST PACKAGE, WE MIGHT GO BACK TO A BIG PACKAGE, FOUR D-TACKLES OR STRONG, 3D-TACKLES AND ONE D-END. IT DEPENDS ON THE CALLS. YOU CAN, BUT WE DON’T, I DON’T BELIEVE IN CARRYING TOO MANY CALLS. KIDS START GETTING IT SCRAMBLED IN THEIR HEADS. I GET IT SCRAMBLED. I’M NOT AS SMART. I CAN’T CARRY AS MANY CALLS. WE TRY TO KEEP IT TO A MINIMUM, PLAY THE KIDS FAST. IT IS PACKAGED BY PERSONNEL FOR US SO WE KNOW WHAT CALLS WE ARE GOING IN THE GAME WITH AND WHAT CALLS WILL BE THERE.>>CAN YOU REMIND US WHICH DEFENSIVE COACHES ARE ON FIELD AND IN BOOTH AND WHY YOU WENT WITH THAT PLAN?>>YEAH. WHEN WE STARTED THE YEAR, ALL FOUR OF US WERE ON THE FIELD. FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS WE’VE BEEN DOING THAT. SOMETHING COACH SITAKE BROUGHT. WE HAD ALL FOUR COACHES ON THE FIELD DEFENSIVELY. WE PUT THE GRADUATE ASSISTANTS UP IN THE BOX WITH OUR ANALYSTS. THE IDEA BEHIND THAT IS THE KIDS THROUGHOUT THE WEEK HEAR OUR VOICES AND WE ARE COACHING THEM IN PERSON, EYE TO EYE, SEEING THEIR FACE. THE GRADUATE ASSISTANTS ARE BREAKING DOWN THE FILM, KIND OF PUTTING STATS TOGETHER AND GETTING ALL THAT READY AND THEY ARE SEEING A LOT OF THE FILM EVEN THE ONES THAT WE DON’T BREAK DOWN, BUT THEY SEE ALL OF IT AND KNOW HOW TO TAG IT. IN THE BOX THEY SEE IT THE WAY WE DO. WE STAY IN FRONT OF OUR KIDS. THE ONE THING THAT WE MADE VERSUS HAWAII, WE PUT COACH LAMB IN THE BOX. NORMALLY HE IS ON THE GROUND AS SPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATOR. WE SPLIT ON SPECIAL TEAMS. HE IS STILL THE GUY THAT HEADS EVERYTHING. I’M IN CHARGE OF KICKOFF AND COACH STEWART IS IN CHARGE OF PUNT RETURN, KICK RETURN AND COACH KALANI SITAKE IS PUNT.>>WAS HE BOOTH FOR NIU?>>HE WAS.>>WILL HE STAY THERE THE REST OF THE YEAR?>>YEAH. I THINK SO. I LIKE THE SETUP RIGHT NOW. IT IS, FOR US, IT IS GETTING HIM UP THERE WAS GOOD FOR US TO BE ABLE FOR HIM TO SEE THE WHOLE BOX. OUR DEFENSIVE LINE G.A. WAS THERE AND SAW WHAT WAS GOING ON. SEEING THE RUN FIT WITH THE LINEBACKERS AND D-LINE IS BETTER FOR COACH LAMB TO BE UP THERE AS WELL AS KEEP HIS PULSE ON THE GAME AND EMOTION OUT. THAT WAS GOOD FOR HIM.>>LAST 30 SECONDS HERE. IT GETS TALKED ABOUT MORE FREQUENTLY. WE TALKED 10 PERSONNEL, 11 PERSONNEL, 12 PERSONNEL, 20 PERSONNEL, WHAT DO THE TWO NUMBERS REFER TO?>>THERE ARE FIVE ELIGIBLES ON THE FIELD. THE FIRST NUMBER IS THE RUNNING BACK AND A TIGHT END. A VT >>A 12 IS RUN RUNNING BACK AND TWO TENTDS?>>THE BIGGER THE PERSONNEL, THE HEAVIER THE RUN TENDENCY AND MAX PRO SHOT TWO MAN ROUTES. IT CHANGES THE GAME.>>GOOD LUCK THIS WEEKEND AT BOISE STATE.>>THANK YOU.>>THAT IS COACH ILAISA TUIAKI. THAT WILL DO IT FOR THE “COORDINATORS’ CORNER.” BACK WITH COACH ILAISA TUIAKI AND JEFF GRIMES. WE LOOK AHEAD WITH A TRIP TO BOSTON. THANK YOU TO OUR STAFF. I’M GREG WRUBELL. THIS IS THE
