Dolphins End ’85 Bears Undefeated Season (Week 13, 1985) | Bears vs. Dolphins | NFL Full Game

>>WE ARE LIVE FROM THE ORANGE BOWL IN MIAMI, FLORIDA. THERE’S A SELLOUT CROWD, OF COURSE. A WILD AIR OF ANTICIPATION. THE UNDEFEATED CHICAGO BEARS ARE IN TOWN TO MEET THE MIAMI DOLPHINS. THERE HAVE BEEN THREE UNDEFEATED TEAMS IN THE NFL OVER THE YEARS. THE BEARS HAVE A PAIR OF THEM. THE LAST TO BE UNDEFEATED WERE THE ’72 DOLPHINS. 14-0 REGULAR SEASON. THEY WENT TO 17-0 WITH A VICTORY OVER WASHINGTON IN SUPER BOWL VII. MIAMI WOULD LIKE TO SEE THEIR RECORD STAY INTACT. THEY WOULD LIKE TO WIN TONIGHT, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, THEY ARE FIGHTING FOR A DIVISIONAL PLAYOFF, A DIVISIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. THEY KNOW THAT TONIGHT, IF THEY CAN DEFEAT THE CHICAGO BEARS, THEY WILL MOVE INTO A FIRST-PLACE TIE WITH NEW ENGLAND AND THE NEW YORK JETS. IT SHOULD BE A WILD ONE. HELLO, AGAIN, EVERYONE. I’M FRANK GIFFORD. AND WE ARE GLAD YOU’RE WITH US TONIGHT. WE THINK WE HAVE WHAT COULD BE A CLASSIC. THE UNDEFEATED CHICAGO BEARS. THEY ARE 12-0, LOOKING TO GO 13-0 AGAINST MIAMI. THEY’RE LOOKING AHEAD, EVEN BEYOND THAT, TO PERHAPS A 19-0 SEASON. NO FOOTBALL TEAM HAS EVER DONE THAT. THE DOLPHINS, IN ’72, WENT TO 17. BUT IN RETROSPECT, THIS IS A TEAM, AS YOU LOOK AT THEM, THAT THE LATE PAPA GEORGE BEAR HALAS WOULD’VE LOVED. THEY’RE WILD. THEY’RE A LITTLE BIT CRAZY. IN CERTAIN POSITIONS, THEY DO A LOT OF THINGS. I DON’T KNOW WHAT HE WOULD’VE THOUGHT OF THE REFRIGERATOR, WILLIAM PERRY, BUT HE WOULD LIKE THIS TEAM, AND I’M SURE IT’S WHAT HE HAD IN MIND WHEN HE HANDPICKED MIKE DITKA SOME FIVE YEARS AGO TO TAKE OVER, THE FORMER ALL-PRO TIGHT END FOR THESE CHICAGO BEARS. THE MIAMI DOLPHINS, OF COURSE, WOULD LIKE TO CUT THE BEARS OFF AT THE PASS, SO TO SPEAK, FROM BECOMING THE WINNINGEST TEAM IN A SINGLE SEASON IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL, BUT THEY KNOW IT’S GOING TO BE DIFFICULT. AND THERE WAS A DIFFICULT GAME PLAYED HERE MANY YEARS AGO, FOLLOWING THE SEASON OF ’68. THERE WAS A TEAM THAT WAS SAID TO BE UNBEATABLE. I’M THINKING OF THE BALTIMORE COLTS. AND THERE WAS A VERY COCKY QUARTERBACK NAMED JOE NAMATH WHO CAME OUT AND SAID, “WE’LL BEAT THEM,” AND HE PROMPTLY WENT OUT AND DID THAT. ALL RIGHT. SIMILAR SITUATION PERHAPS, JOE, BUT WHAT DOES MIAMI DO WITH THESE BIG, BAD BEARS?>>MIAMI IS GONNA HAVE TO PLAY THE BEST GAME THEY’VE PLAYED SO FAR THIS SEASON. IT CERTAINLY IS A SIMILAR SITUATION IN THAT THIS IS STILL A GAME OF EMOTIONS, AND IF EITHER TEAM HAS AN EMOTIONAL EDGE TONIGHT, IT’S THE MIAMI DOLPHINS. THEY NEED THIS GAME TO KEEP THEIR PLAYOFF HOPES REALISTIC. NOW, THE BEARS ARE A SENSATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM, BUT THEY HAVEN’T FACED THE LIKES OF DAN MARINO, MARK CLAYTON, OR MARK DUPER YET. THE KEY FOR MIAMI TONIGHT WILL BE PUTTING A MAKESHIFT OFFENSIVE LINE TOGETHER, GIVING DAN MARINO ENOUGH TIME TO GET THE BALL TO THE OUTSIDE. BECAUSE, BELIEVE ME, DUPER AND CLAYTON, THEY’RE GONNA GET OPEN. THE DEFENSIVE LINE OF THE DOLPHINS AND THE LINEBACKERS, THEY HAVE A MAJOR TASK — STOPPING WALTER PAYTON. I DON’T THINK THEY CAN DO IT. HERE’S O.J. TO LET US KNOW A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE CHICAGO BEARS.>>WELL, WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT CHICAGO, WE’RE TALKING ABOUT A HAPPY TEAM, JOE. THESE GUYS ENJOY ONE ANOTHER, THEY ENJOY THEIR COACHES, THEY CAN’T WAIT TILL GAME DAY, AND NORMALLY THAT SPELLS VICTORY NO MATTER WHAT GAME YOU’RE PLAYING. ON OFFENSE, THEY GOT WALTER PAYTON, AND HE’S DOING IT ALL. HE’S ALREADY GOT JUST ABOUT EVERY CAREER RECORD THERE IS, AND HE’S GOING AFTER THE SINGLE-SEASON RECORDS NOW. IF HE GETS 100 YARDS TONIGHT, THAT WOULD BE EIGHT-STRAIGHT GAMES IN WHICH HE’S DONE THAT, AND THAT WOULD KNOCK EARL CAMPBELL AND YOUR BOY RIGHT OUT OF THE RECORD BOOKS. WE HAD SEVEN. DEFENSE IS THE KEY OF THE GAME FOR THIS TEAM. THEY’LL LINE NINE GUYS UP. THEY’LL BRING ANY COMBINATION OF THOSE NINE GUYS. THEY’RE TRYING TO CONFUSE THE OFFENSIVE-LINE BLOCKERS, AND THEY’RE TRYING TO MAKE IT DIFFICULT ON THE QUARTERBACK TO READ HIS KEYS. BUT THE KEY WILL BE THE PLAY OF THEIR CORNERBACKS — MIKE RICHARDSON AND LESLIE FRAZIER. THEY MUST SLOW DOWN DUPER AND CLAYTON AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE AND TRY TO DISRUPT MARINO’S TIMING. IF THEY CAN DO THAT, THEY’LL GIVE THEIR PASS RUSHERS TIME TO GET TO THE QUARTERBACK, AND IT SHOULD BE 13-0 FOR CHICAGO. IN ANY EVENT, WE’RE TALKING ABOUT MARINO. WE’RE TALKING ABOUT PAYTON. WE’RE TALKING ABOUT CHICAGO’S PASS RUSH, AND WE’RE TALKING ABOUT THE PASSING GAME OF MIAMI. IT SHOULD BE ONE WHALE OF A FOOTBALL GAME.>>THERE IS WALTER PAYTON. WHAT A FANTASTIC SEASON HE IS HAVING NOW IN HIS 11th YEAR. JUST AMAZING. NEARLY 1,200 YARDS ON THE SEASON. SAID LAST YEAR WHEN HE BROKE JIM BROWN’S RECORD, “I’D LIKE TO GET 15,000.” HE’S NOT FAR OFF. THE CHICAGO BEARS HAVE WON THE TOSS. THEY DROP WILLIE GAULT BACK WITH KEN TAYLOR. WILLIE GAULT, THE GREAT SPEEDSTER. DENNIS GENTRY IS THERE. AND FUAD REVEIZ WILL KICK OFF FOR THE MIAMI DOLPHINS. GENTRY AND GAULT STAND TOGETHER BACK THERE. THE BEARS WOULD LOVE TO GET THE BALL TO WILLIE GAULT. EARLIER IN THE YEAR, HE WENT 99 YARDS FOR A TOUCHDOWN AGAINST THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS WHEN THE REDSKINS WERE LEADING 10-0, AND THAT REALLY DESTROYED THE REDSKINS, AS THE BEARS WENT ON TO ANNIHILATE THE REDSKINS THAT DAY. REVEIZ KICKS IT OFF TO THE ROAR OF THE CROWD. GENTRY DEEP IN THE END ZONE. SO, REVEIZ IS HYPED UP. AND THE BEARS WILL START AT THE 20-YARD LINE. THEY OPEN WITH STEVE FULLER. HE STARTED THE LAST THREE GAMES BECAUSE OF THE SHOULDER INJURY TO JIM McMAHON. BUT KEEP IN MIND IT WAS FULLER LAST YEAR WHO LED THE BEARS IN THEIR FINAL FOUR GAMES, LED THEM INTO THE PLAYOFFS, A WIN OVER THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS, BEFORE THEY ULTIMATELY LOST TO THE SAN FRANCISCO 49ers, WHO, OF COURSE, BECAME THE SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS. FULLER HAD STARTING YEARS WITH KANSAS CITY BEFORE BEING TRADED TO THE RAMS IN ’83, WHEN HE DID NOT PLAY AT ALL. McMAHON, BY THE WAY, CAN GO. EARLY IN THE YEAR, THEY TOLD US HE WOULDN’T PLAY, AND HE CAME IN IN THE THIRD QUARTER AND DESTROYED THE MINNESOTA VIKINGS. FIRST AND 10, THE CHICAGO BEARS. TRYING TO GET A SCREEN PASS OUT TO McKINNON. THEY HAD THE TIGHT END, EMERY MOOREHEAD, IN MOTION IN FRONT OF McKINNON. IT IS INCOMPLETE. DEFENSIVELY, NOW, FOR THE MIAMI DOLPHINS, THEY HAVE A LOT OF PROBLEMS. DOUG BETTERS HAS MISSED A COUPLE OF GAMES. HE’S HAD A VERY SORE KNEE. MIKE CHARLES IS STILL AT THE MIDDLE NOSE-TACKLE POSITION BECAUSE BOB BAUMHOWER, THEIR ALL-PRO AND PRO-BOWL NOSE TACKLE A YEAR AGO DID NOT COME BACK FROM OFF-SEASON KNEE AND ANKLE SURGERY. THEY’VE GIVEN UP A LOT OF YARDS TO THE RUSH. 23rd AGAINST THE RUSH IN NFL, AND THERE ARE ONLY 28 TEAMS, SO THAT IS THE FEARS OF THE MIAMI DOLPHIN FANS TONIGHT — THAT WALTER PAYTON WILL RUN WILD. BUT THIS IS MATT SUHEY. AND A HUSTLING, SWARMING DOLPHINS DEFENSE STOPS SUHEY RIGHT AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. MIKE CHARLES, THE BIG NOSE TACKLE WE SPOKE OF A MOMENT AGO, WAS THERE. IT’LL BE THIRD DOWN AND 10.>>THEY WEREN’T SUCCESSFUL ON THAT FIRST-DOWN PLAY, BUT I THINK IT WAS AN EXCELLENT CALL. WHAT THEY DID WAS THEY TRIED TO THROW A HITCH PASS TO THE WIDE RECEIVERS. THAT MAKES THE LINEBACKERS CONSCIOUS OF THE FACT THAT THEY GOT TO GET OUT THERE. AND ONCE THEY’RE WORRIED ABOUT GETTING OUT THERE, THAT’S GONNA OPEN UP THOSE INSIDE LANES FOR PAYTON TO RUN THE FOOTBALL.>>THIRD AND 10. THAT’S DENNIS GENTRY IN MOTION. FROM THE SHOTGUN, FULLER. FIRES. IN AND OUT OF THE HANDS. INCOMPLETE TO DENNIS McKINNON, WHO HAS STRUGGLED FOR THE LAST FIVE GAMES. HE HAD 27 RECEPTIONS COMING INTO TONIGHT. THAT’S ONE HE SHOULD’VE HANDLED. HE’S ONLY HAD FOUR RECEPTIONS IN HIS LAST FIVE GAMES.>>WELL, WE CAN’T FAULT FULLER FOR THAT LAST PASS. HE THREW THE BALL ON THE MONEY. THAT WAS PRETTY GOOD COVERAGE BY DON McNEAL, BY THE WAY, WHO HAS BEEN INJURED. NOW, IF McNEAL IS HEALTHY FOR THIS GAME, AND IT APPEARS HE IS, MIAMI’S DEFENSE IS GONNA BE BETTER BECAUSE OF IT. FULLER DOESN’T LOOK SHAKY TO ME, BY THE WAY. HE MISSED THAT FIRST PASS, BUT LET’S GIVE HIM A LITTLE MORE TIME.>>MAURY BUFORD TO PUNT. YOU HAD A QUICK LOOK AT TOMMY VIGORITO. AVERAGING A LITTLE OVER 11 YARDS FOR HIS PUNT-RETURNING EFFORTS THIS YEAR. BUFORD HAS TO HURRY IT. IT’S END OVER END. VIGORITO LOOKS IT OVER AND WATCHES IT TAKE A MIAMI DOLPHIN BOUNCE CLOSE UP TO MIDFIELD, AND THE DOLPHINS WILL HAVE THEIR FIRST POSSESSION OUT NEAR THE 47-YARD LINE ON A 33-YARD EFFORT BY BUFORD. FINAL WORDS FROM HEAD COACH DON SHULA TO DAN MARINO, THE RECORD-SETTING QUARTERBACK OF A YEAR AGO. AND LAST WEEK AGAINST BUFFALO, 22 OF 31, BUT HE PASSED FOR 71%. THAT’S HIS BEST COMPLETION AVERAGE THUS FAR OF THE YEAR. THE TWO MARKS — CLAYTON TO ONE SIDE, DUPER TO THE OTHER. NOT HAVING, OF COURSE, THE KIND OF YEAR THEY HAD A YEAR AGO. DUPER HAS MISSED SO MANY GAMES WITH THAT HAIRLINE FRACTURE OF THE TIBIA. CAME BACK THREE WEEKS AGO AGAINST THE JETS, PROMPTLY SCORED THREE TOUCHDOWNS, AND HAD OVER 200 YARDS RECEIVING. WHEN THEY ARE IN THERE TOGETHER, THEY ARE AWESOME. MARINO. THERE’S A FLAG DOWN, BUT MARINO WAS TRYING TO GET THE BEARS’ ATTENTION QUICKLY, SAYING, “LOOK, GUYS, I CAN GO DEEP WHETHER YOU THINK I CAN OR NOT.”>>HE HAD HIM OPEN, TOO, FRANK. HE JUST FLAT THREW IT OVER HIS HEAD.>>UNFORTUNATELY YOU LOOK AT THESE TWO NUMBER 76’s, STEVE McMICHAEL FOR CHICAGO AND STEVE CLARK FOR THE DOLPHINS. STEVE CLARK IS SOMEWHAT INEXPERIENCED EVEN THOUGH HE’S BEEN IN THE LEAGUE FIVE YEARS, AND I THINK HE MAY HAVE GOT CAUGHT HOLDING STEVE McMICHAEL.>>OUR REFEREE TONIGHT IS GORDON McCARTER. IT’LL BE WORKING AGAINST THE BEARS.>>NUMBER 76, OFFENSE. 10-YARD PENALTY. REPEAT FIRST DOWN.>>STEVE CLARK. HE PLAYED WELL LAST WEEK AGAINST BUFFALO, WHEN THE OFFENSIVE LINE WAS HURTING EVEN MORE THAN IT IS TONIGHT. HE WAS IN THERE WITH JEFF DELLENBACH, WHO HAD TO PLAY FOR JON GIESLER ON THE LEFT SIDE, BUT GIESLER IS IN THAT OFFENSIVE LINE, AT LEAST FOR THE MOMENT, FOR MIAMI. FIRST DOWN AND 20. THE THIRD WIDE RECEIVER, NAT MOORE, COMES IN — NUMBER 89. INSIDE. TONY NATHAN. NATHAN, PARALLEL TO THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE, LOOKING FOR ANYTHING, ANY KIND OF A GAP. HE DOESN’T FIND ONE, AS THE BEARS DROP HIM AFTER A PICKUP OF A YARD. GARY FENCIK UP THERE STRONG FROM HIS SAFETY POSITION. THE REST OF THE BEAR DEFENSIVE UNIT. THEY HAVE MOVED DAN HAMPTON OVER TO DEFENSIVE LEFT END. HE’S STARTED THERE, NOW, FOR SEVERAL WEEKS, REPLACING MIKE HARTENSTINE. THEY DID THAT TO GET EXTRA PRESSURE AGAINST THE QUARTERBACKS, WHO ARE, OF COURSE, PREDOMINANTLY RIGHT-HANDED IN THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE. SO, HE IS FACING THEM ON THE RIGHT HAND. AND, OF COURSE, WILLIAM PERRY, THE REFRIGERATOR, HAS MADE HIS FIFTH START FOR THE BEARS. HE WEARS NUMBER 72. IT’S SECOND DOWN AND 18. NO BLITZ. MARINO HAS TO HURRY THE PASS. IN MARK DUPER’S DIRECTION. HE WAS WELL-COVERED. MARINO HELD IT AS LONG AS HE COULD, BUT RICHARDSON AND DUERSON HAD DUPER COVERED WELL. HE IS THE LEADING PASSER IN THE NFC, AND HE HAS NOT PLAYED, NOW, FOR FOUR GAMES. HE HAS MISSED THE LAST THREE GAMES, BUT HE IS MR. ELECTRICITY WHEN HE COMES INTO A GAME. AND HE’S KIND OF LIKE THE BEAR OFFENSIVE LINEMEN. SORT OF WILD AND WOOLLY. HE HAS A LOT OF FUN PLAYING THIS GAME. RIGHT NOW, A VERY CONCERNED MIAMI DOLPHIN QUARTERBACK DAN MARINO. THIRD AND 18 AGAINST A CHICAGO BEARS DEFENSE WITH 50 SACKS ON THE YEAR. THAT’S NOT A GOOD POSITION TO BE IN. AGAIN, NO BLITZ. MARINO. “COME ON BACK. GIVE ME A BREAK, GUYS.” FINALLY HE GETS A RECEIVER DOWNFIELD. AND COMING DOWN WITH IT IS MARK DUPER. HE FINALLY WORKED FREE FROM MIKE RICHARDSON, BUT CREDIT THE TRAFFIC DIRECTING OF DAN MARINO. DUPER DID NOT KNOW AT THIS POINT MARINO WAS IN TROUBLE. HE WAS STILL TRYING TO GET UPFIELD. NOW YOU’LL SEE HIM TURN BACK. MARINO WAS GESTURING, “COME BACK,” AND DUPER COMES BACK, GIVES THE PASSING PLANE TO MARINO, AND THE DOLPHINS HAVE A FIRST DOWN INSIDE THE 35-YARD LINE OF THE BEARS. GOOD EFFORT BY MARINO.>>EXCELLENT EFFORT. YOU WON’T SEE HIM LEAVE THE POCKET VERY OFTEN, BUT IF HE’S ABLE TO DO THAT TONIGHT, THEY’RE GONNA GET A LOT OF POINTS.>>FIRST AND 10. WOODY BENNETT. DUERSON WAS THERE QUICKLY. A GAIN OF 2. IT’LL BE SECOND AND 8.>>I DON’T THINK THIS MIAMI TEAM IS GONNA DO ANY GOOD RUNNING THE FOOTBALL AT CHICAGO THIS EARLY IN THE GAME. WHAT’S GONNA OPEN UP THE RUNNING PACK FOR THE MIAMI DOLPHINS, IF THEY DO GET ONE OPENED UP, IS THE PASSING ATTACK. MOST TEAMS TRY TO ESTABLISH THE RUN, THEN GO TO THE PASS. THE DOLPHINS ARE A PASSING FOOTBALL TEAM, AND THEY HAVEN’T HAD A 100-YARD RUSHER IN ANY ONE GAME YET THIS SEASON.>>THEY DID RUN THE BALL WELL LAST WEEK AGAINST BUFFALO, BUT THAT WAS BUFFALO, NOT CHICAGO. SECOND AND 8. NAT MOORE COMES IN, NUMBER 89, THE VETERAN WIDE RECEIVER, TO JOIN MARK CLAYTON AND MARK DUPER. MARINO. NAT MOORE. MOORE TAKES IT IN! [ CHEERS AND APPLAUSE ] 33-YARD TOUCHDOWN. THEY PICKED UP THE BLITZ, MARINO WAS RIGHT ON TARGET, AND NAT MOORE SHOOK LOOSE FROM ONE TACKLER AND TOOK IT IN FROM 33 YARDS OUT.>>HERE YOU SEE MARINO IS GONNA THROW AN OUT TO THE LEFT. NAT MOORE, HE SIMPLY OUTRUNS GARY FENCIK. YOU SEE FENCIK ALMOST GETTING PICKED OFF ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF YOUR SCREEN. AND NAT CUTS IT BACK. THIS IS A NEAR CLIP RIGHT HERE, COMING UP ON THE SCREEN, BUT I’M GLAD HE DIDN’T CALL IT.>>SO FAR, MARINO HAS HAD TIME TO THROW THE FOOTBALL. THAT, OF COURSE, WE ALL KNEW WAS THE KEY COMING INTO THE NIGHT. BUT WE ARE EARLY IN THE GAME. REVEIZ SPLITTING THE UPRIGHTS. WITH 11:09 REMAINING IN THE FIRST QUARTER, THE DOLPHINS LEAD 7-0. THERE WAS A HOLDING PENALTY AGAINST THE MIAMI DOLPHINS, AND REVEIZ WILL BE TRYING THE CONVERSION THIS TIME FROM 30 YARDS. SAME DIFFERENCE. THE DOLPHINS STUNNING THE BEARS IN THE EARLY GOING. AND IT WAS A FINE PASS BY MARINO TO GET TO NAT MOORE, BUT THERE WAS EXCELLENT PROTECTION. AND THAT WILL BE THE KEY FOR THE DOLPHINS TONIGHT. 11:09 REMAINING IN THE FIRST QUARTER. WILLIE GAULT AND DENNIS GENTRY DEEP ONCE AGAIN FOR THE BEARS. THEY’RE TRYING TO GUESS WITH FUAD REVEIZ. THE BEARS WANT THE FOOTBALL TO GO TO WILLIE GAULT, OF COURSE, THE WORLD-CLASS SPRINTER AND HURDLER WHEN HE WAS AT TENNESSEE. AND MORE THAN THAT. HE HAD FIVE KICKOFF RETURNS FOR TOUCHDOWNS AT TENNESSEE. HE HAD ONE THIS YEAR AGAINST THE REDSKINS, I MENTIONED A MOMENT AGO, AND HE CAN FLAT FLY. MADE THE OLYMPIC TEAM THAT DID NOT GET TO GO TO MOSCOW IN 1980 AS A SPRINTER. WOULD’VE MADE IT, PERHAPS, AS A HURDLER IN ’84 HAD HE NOT SIGNED THE BEARS’ CONTRACT, BEING THE NUMBER-ONE DRAFT PICK IN 1983. REVEIZ, I’M SURE, HAS BEEN TOLD BY DON SHULA, “KEEP IT AWAY FROM GAULT, IF YOU CAN.” NOW HE MOVES TO THE RIGHT. REVEIZ BEING, OF COURSE, A RIGHT-FOOTED KICKER, THEY HAVE A TENDENCY TO HOOK IT. GAULT, BUT HE’S DEEP IN THE END ZONE. TWICE, NOW, REVEIZ HAS KICKED DEEP INTO THE END ZONE, FORCING THE TOUCHBACK. IT IS A VERY WARM NIGHT. TEMPERATURE AT KICKOFF — 75 DEGREES. THE HUMIDITY — 82%. 20% CHANCE OF RAIN TONIGHT. BUT FOR THOSE OF YOU WATCHING US AROUND THE NATION THAT HAS BEEN BUFFETED BY WINTER STORMS, WE ARE DELIGHTED YOU ARE WITH US. OUR SYMPATHIES WITH YOU. I KNOW THAT IT’S BEEN PAINFUL IN MANY AREAS OF THE COUNTRY, SO SETTLE BACK AND ENJOY WHAT WE THINK IS GONNA BE A FINE FOOTBALL GAME TONIGHT. THE DOLPHINS HAVE OPENED THE SCORING. THEY LEAD 7-0. 11 MINUTES REMAINING IN THE FIRST QUARTER. THE UNDEFEATED BEARS AT 12-0 GOING AGAINST THE DOLPHINS — 8-4 — TRYING TO STAY WITH NEW ENGLAND AND THE JETS ATOP THE AFC EAST. FULLER IS BACK. GAULT IS WIDE OPEN. GAULT HAD TO COME BACK FOR THAT PASS BY FULLER. WE TALKED ABOUT HIS SPEED. HAD FULLER BEEN A LITTLE MORE ON STRIDE WITH GAULT, THERE WOULD’VE BEEN NO CATCHING THIS MAN. 69-YARD PICKUP.>>NOW, I THINK THEY CAUGHT THE MIAMI DOLPHINS A LITTLE OUT OF POSITION. MIAMI DOLPHINS DEFENSE CERTAINLY PAYING ATTENTION TO THE RUNNING ATTACK, AND GAULT JUST SIMPLY RAN RIGHT BY WILLIAM JUDSON. THAT’S THAT WORLD-CLASS SPEED WE’RE TALKING ABOUT. IT IS A SLIGHT UNDERTHROW, BUT THAT BALL HAD TO TRAVEL 60 YARDS IN THE AIR.>>WELL, WHAT WAS INTERESTING IS BOTH OF THE DOLPHINS SAFETIES — BUD BROWN AND GLENN BLACKWOOD — WAS NOWHERE IN THE SCREEN. THEY HAD FALLEN FOR THE FAKE TO PAYTON.>>BUD BROWN MADE THE STOP INSIDE THE 12-YARD LINE. SO THE BEARS COME ROARING RIGHT BACK. [ CROWD CHEERING LOUDLY ] FULLER’S GOT A PROBLEM. STEVE FULLER TURNED AROUND AND CALLED ONE OF THE OFFICIALS INTO THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. THIS IS KIND OF WHAT WE ANTICIPATED MIGHT HAPPEN. THE CROWD DOWN IN THAT CLOSED END IS REALLY GIVING THE BEARS FITS. AND IF STEVE FULLER THOUGHT THAT WAS LOUD, WAIT TILL HE BRINGS THEM UP THIS TIME. WHAT DO YOU DO, JOE? YOU ALMOST HAVE TO GO ON A QUICK COUNT AND GET IT OVER WITH, DON’T YOU, QUIET THEM DOWN?>>NO, I TELL YOU, I’D JUST BE AS PATIENT AS POSSIBLE. A LOT OF PEOPLE WOULD SAY, “ALL RIGHT, HURRY UP, LET’S GO.” BUT WHAT YOU DO GOING ON A QUICK COUNT IS ELIMINATE YOUR CHANCES FOR AUDIBLIZATION. AND YOU WANT TO HAVE A CHANCE TO CHANGE A PLAY DOWN HERE. WE DON’T KNOW FOR SURE WHAT DEFENSE THE DOLPHINS ARE GOING TO BE IN. SO THEY JUST HAVE TO PRACTICE THE OLD PATIENCE ROUTE. SEE, HE’S TRYING TO CALL SOME SIGNALS, AND HIS TEAMMATES CAN’T HEAR HIM. FULLER REALLY HAS TO BE PATIENT HERE.>>AND REFEREE GORDON McCARTER SAYS, “LET’S JUST CALM DOWN. WE’LL GET THINGS ORGANIZED.” DON SHULA AGONIZING ON THE SIDELINES. LOOKING AT DON SHULA, AND HE’S, OF COURSE, NOW IN HIS 22nd YEAR. SECOND WINNINGEST — THIRD WINNINGEST COACH OF ALL TIME BEHIND GEORGE HALAS AND TOM LANDRY. A WIN TONIGHT, AND HE MOVES TO WITHIN ONE GAME OF TOM LANDRY. LANDRY HAS WON 252, AND SHULA HAS WON 251. DOLPHINS LEADING 7-0. 10 MINUTES REMAINING HERE IN THE FIRST QUARTER. FIRST AND 10. KIND OF A REVERSE TO MATT SUHEY. A STRANGE REVERSE, AN INSIDE HAND-OFF TO SUHEY, WHO’S HAVING A TREMENDOUS YEAR KIND OF QUIETLY BEHIND WALTER PAYTON’S GREAT YEAR. GETS IT INSIDE THE 10. HE’S DOWN CLOSE TO THE 7-YARD LINE. MARK BROWN DEFENSIVELY THERE FOR THE DOLPHINS.>>AS I WAS SAYING EARLIER, THE DOLPHINS — THEY MUST BE A LITTLE CONFUSED. THEY GOT THE GREATEST RUNNER OF ALL TIME STATISTIC-WISE — WALTER PAYTON — IN THE BACKFIELD, AND HERE WE ARE IN THE SECOND DRIVE, AND HE HASN’T TOUCHED THE BALL.>>WE WILL SEE HIM. THAT’S FOR CERTAIN. [ CROWD CHEERING LOUDLY ] SECOND DOWN AND ABOUT 6. AND THERE COMES A POINT WHEN THIS STARTS TO GET A LITTLE RIDICULOUS. [ CROWD BOOING ]>>WELL, THE OFFICIALS ARE TELLING FULLER TO STAY UP THERE. AND WHAT’S HE GONNA DO? HE’S GONNA STAND UP THERE AND STAND AROUND AND WAIT TILL THE CROWD GOES DOWN, BUT THE CROWD ISN’T GONNA GET QUIET.>>CONTRARY TO WHAT A LOT OF PEOPLE THINK, THERE IS NOTHING REFEREE GORDON McCARTER CAN DO. HE CANNOT PENALIZE THE DOLPHINS. SO, THEY’LL CALL IT AGAIN, MOVE UP TO THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE, AND HOPEFULLY SOME COOLER HEADS IN THE STANDS WILL PREVAIL. SECOND DOWN AND 6. DENNIS McKINNON SPLIT TO THE RIGHT. THAT’S THE TIGHT END, NUMBER 87, EMERY MOOREHEAD, SETTLING ON THE RIGHT. WILLIE GAULT IS TO THE LEFT. MATT SUHEY. BIG OPENING RIGHT UP THE MIDDLE. SO MANY TIMES THIS YEAR, THE BEARS HAVE OPENED RUNNING SUHEY RATHER THAN PAYTON. EVERYBODY GEARED FOR PAYTON ON THE OUTSIDE. AND NOW COMES THE LEGEND HIMSELF. THE NUMBER-ONE APPLIANCE IN THE SPORTING WORLD — WILLIAM PERRY, THE REFRIGERATOR. HAS SCORED A COUPLE RUNNING, HAS BLOCKED SEVERAL TIMES FOR WALTER PAYTON FROM THIS FORMATION, AND, OF COURSE, CAUGHT THE TOUCHDOWN PASS AGAINST THE GREEN BAY PACKERS. YOU TALK ABOUT A MARKETABLE COMMODITY, WE’RE GOING TO SHOW YOU A FEATURE AT HALFTIME ABOUT WILLIAM PERRY. FULLER OVER THE TOP. TOUCHDOWN, CHICAGO. THEY COME ROARING RIGHT BACK, ANSWERING THE TOUCHDOWN OF THE MIAMI DOLPHINS WITH 8:21 REMAINING IN THE FIRST QUARTER. SO, BRINGING THE REFRIGERATOR IN JUST A RUSE FOR THE CHICAGO BEARS, AS STEVE FULLER TAKES IT RIGHT OVER THE TOP. HERE’S KEVIN BUTLER NOW COMING ON FOR THE CONVERSION. A REMARKABLE YEAR FOR BUTLER. LEADS THE NFL IN SCORING. 107 POINTS. FOURTH-ROUND PICK FROM GEORGIA. HAS HIT 15 OF HIS LAST 16 FIELD GOALS. HE’S BECOME QUITE A WEAPON. THE BEARS COME RIGHT BACK TO TIE IT UP. WE’RE TIED AT 7. FROM THE ORANGE BOWL IN MIAMI, FULLER TAKING IT IN ON THE QUARTERBACK SNEAK. THE UNDEFEATED CHICAGO BEARS, AT 12-0 — THEY HAVE CLINCHED HOME-FIELD ADVANTAGE RIGHT UP THROUGH THE SUPER BOWL IF THEY CAN KEEP WINNING. GOING AGAINST THE MIAMI DOLPHINS, 8-4. LOOKING FOR A NINTH VICTORY TONIGHT TO STAY TIED WITH THE JETS AND NEW ENGLAND IN THE AFC EASTERN DIVISION. WE ARE TIED AT 7 WITH 8:21 REMAINING IN THE FIRST QUARTER. LORENZO HAMPTON WILL BRING IT OUT OF THE END ZONE. HAMPTON MAKES IT HAPPEN TO OUT OVER THE 40-YARD LINE, NEAR THE 44-YARD LINE. STOPPED THERE BY SHAUN GAYLE. 45-YARD EFFORT BY THE FIRST-ROUND DRAFT PICK FROM FLORIDA. I DIDN’T KNOW FOR SURE WHETHER HE’D BRING IT OUT, O.J.>>WELL, HE’S A NUMBER-ONE DRAFT CHOICE, AND HE’S ALWAYS BEEN A BIG-PLAY PLAYER DOWN AT FLORIDA. THEY DRAFTED HIM BECAUSE OF HIS ABILITY TO MAKE THE BIG PLAY. AND, OF COURSE, IN A GAME LIKE THIS, FIELD POSITION MEANS EVERYTHING, AND HE HAS GIVEN THE DOLPHINS GOOD FIELD POSITION.>>THEY ARE STARTING AT THEIR 43-YARD LINE. WOODY BENNETT, 34. TONY NATHAN, WHO IS ONE OF THE GREAT SECRETS IN THE NFL. NATHAN SUCH A FINE RUNNING BACK. GOOD RECEIVER. HEADING FOR HIS THIRD CONSECUTIVE 1,000-YARD SEASON OF COMBINED RUSHING AND PASSING. THAT TIME MARINO CHASED OUT OF THE POCKET. GETS IT TO DUPER. AND DUPER IS SMOTHERED, AS HE GETS TO THE 47-YARD LINE, BY LESLIE FRAZIER. GAIN OF ABOUT 3. IT’LL BE SECOND DOWN AND 7. AND THERE IS LORENZO HAMPTON. ALL-PURPOSE BACK AT FLORIDA, TOO, O.J. DID A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING. HE WAS A GOOD KICK-RETURN MAN, GOOD RECEIVER, AND AN EXCELLENT RUNNING BACK. THEY MARKED IT INSIDE THE 47… AS NAT MOORE COMES IN TO JOIN THE MARKS — CLAYTON AND DUPER. WE HAVE THE THREE-WIDE-RECEIVER OFFENSE IN FOR MIAMI. TONY NATHAN. AND NATHAN GETS A MIAMI FIRST DOWN AT THE 37-YARD LINE OF THE BEARS. GOOD RUNNING BY NATHAN. GOOD PLAY CALLING BY DON SHULA. THE BEARS THINKING PASS. THEY COME WITH THE DRAW. BIG OPENING.>>VERY NICE DRAW PLAY. THE BEARS THINKING PASS. YOU KNOW, MOST TEAMS AROUND THE LEAGUE FEEL THAT YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO RUN AGAINST THIS TYPE OF DEFENSE WHEN THEY’RE STUNTING A LOT. BUT THE BEARS ARE SUCH A WELL-DISCIPLINED TEAM WHEN THEY’RE STUNTING THAT THEY’RE TOUGH AGAINST THE RUN. CONSEQUENTLY, THEY’RE NUMBER ONE AGAINST THE RUN IN THE NFL.>>NATHAN IS OVER 1,000 YARDS COMBINED RUSHING AND RECEIVING. AND HE GETS THE FIRST DOWN NEAR THE 37 OF THE BEARS. HAMPTON MOVED FOR THE BEARS. MARINO HAS A FREE SHOT. FLAG IS DOWN AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. IT DID APPEAR THAT DAN HAMPTON, 99, BOTTOM OF YOUR SCREEN, WAS OFFSIDE. AND UNLESS HE WAS DRAWN OFF, IT WILL WORK AGAINST THE BEARS.>>MARINO IS SHARP. THAT WAS A PLAY HE HAD WOODY BENNETT OPEN FOR FIVE YARDS. BUT WHEN YOU HAVE A FREE PLAY, THROW TO THE DEEPEST GUY, AND THAT’S WHAT HE WAS TRYING TO DO.>>AND THAT’S THE SECOND TIME HE MISSED THE POST PATTERN TO THE LEFT SIDE. THE RECEIVER WAS OPEN. THIS TIME HE UNDERTHREW IT. THE FIRST TIME HE OVERTHREW IT. DAN’S NOT AS SHARP AS HE’D LIKE TO BE, EVEN THOUGH HE DID MAKE THE BIG PLAY WITH THE, UH…>>OFFSIDES, NUMBER 99 DEFENSE. FIRST DOWN AND 5.>>…MADE THE BIG PLAY AFTER SCRAMBLING, HE’S STILL NOT THROWING THE BALL AS SHARPLY AS HE’D LIKE TO.>>HE LOOKS AT THE NUMBER-ONE DEFENSE IN THE NFL. FIRST AGAINST THE RUSH, FOURTH AGAINST THE PASS. 50 SACKS, THE BEARS HAVE PUT TOGETHER. THAT WAS SECOND ONLY TO THE GIANTS THROUGH 12 GAMES. 30 INTERCEPTIONS. THEY HAVE SEVEN PLAYERS WITH THREE OR MORE INTERCEPTIONS. TWO OF THEM HAVE FIVE — FRAZIER AND FENCIK. LORENZO HAMPTON IS IN AT RUNNING BACK WITH WOODY BENNETT. THIS IS HAMPTON. AND HE IS JUST SWARMED UNDER AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE AND JUST — DOWN CLOSE TO THE 30-YARD LINE, AS TEMPERS FLARE. DAVE DUERSON WAS THERE FIRST FOR THE BEARS.>>DO YOU THINK THE BEARS ARE TRYING TO INTIMIDATE THE DOLPHINS, FELLOWS? [ CHUCKLES ]>>I TELL YOU, WHEN I PLAYED AGAINST THE BEARS EVEN WHEN THEY WEREN’T A GOOD FOOTBALL TEAM, THEY WERE ALWAYS PHYSICAL. SO I WAS A LITTLE SURPRISED EARLIER IN THIS YEAR, WHEN THE PLAYERS MENTIONED THAT THE PACKERS WERE TRYING TO INTIMIDATE THEM. NO ONE HAS EVER INTIMIDATED CHICAGO THAT I KNOW OF.>>THERE WAS A GAIN OF TWO, PERHAPS THREE. IT’LL BE SECOND DOWN AND 3. 6:19 REMAINING IN THE FIRST QUARTER. WE’RE TIED AT 7 FROM THE ORANGE BOWL IN MIAMI. NATHAN BACK IN WITH WOODY BENNETT. MARINO. IN AND OUT OF THE HANDS OF DUPER. AND IT WAS GARY FENCIK PUTTING THE BLOW TO DUPER.>>IN AND OUT OF HIS HANDS, BUT, AGAIN, DAN IS NOT SHARP TONIGHT. THAT PARTICULAR PASS WE JUST SAW WAS HIGH, TOO DIFFICULT FOR DUPER TO HANDLE. HAD IT BEEN DOWN AROUND THE MIDSECTION, IT WOULD’VE BEEN A GOOD GAINER. I LIKE WHAT MARINO IS DOING, BY THE WAY, THROWING THE BALL QUICKLY. HE’S NOT ALLOWING THAT DEFENSIVE RUSH OF CHICAGO TO GET RARED UP AND GET ON HIM. HE’S THROWING THE QUICK SLANT PASSES. AND SO FAR HE’S HAD RECEIVERS OPEN. HE’S JUST MISSING THEM.>>THE DOLPHINS TOUCHDOWN WAS THE FIRST TOUCHDOWN THE BEARS DEFENSE HAVE GIVEN UP IN 13 QUARTERS. THERE WAS MOVEMENT. BUT THERE IS NO FLAG. MARINO. AND AGAIN, DUPER DOES NOT HOLD ON, AND THAT WOULD’VE BEEN A BIG GAINER. THAT COULD HAVE BEEN A MONSTER GAINER. FUAD REVEIZ WILL COME OUT FOR THE FIELD-GOAL ATTEMPT.>>WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT DUPER’S SPEED, HE HAD MIKE RICHARDSON BEHIND HIM AND MIKE SINGLETARY CHASING HIM. HE CERTAINLY WOULD’VE GOTTEN THE FIRST DOWN AND MAYBE WOULD’VE BEEN DOWN AROUND THE GOAL LINE, IF HE WOULD’VE CAUGHT THE BALL.>>AS I MENTIONED A MOMENT AGO, REVEIZ HAS NOT — MISSED ONLY 1 IN HIS LAST 16 ATTEMPTS. HE’S 18 OF 21 FOR THE YEAR. 47 YARDS OUT. AND REVEIZ GETS HIS LONGEST FIELD GOAL OF THE SEASON, AND HE PUTS THE DOLPHINS BACK IN FRONT WITH 5:56 REMAINING HERE IN THE FIRST QUARTER. SPEEDSTER WILLIE GAULT AND DENNIS GENTRY PLAYING THEIR LITTLE GAME WITH FUAD REVEIZ. GAULT WILL PROBABLY GO ONCE AGAIN TO HIS RIGHT. REVEIZ, BEING A RIGHT-FOOTED KICKER, MAY TEND TO HOOK THE BALL. THE BEARS MOST CERTAINLY WANT GAULT TO HANDLE THE FOOTBALL. NUMBER 83. CAME WITHIN ONE AT TENNESSEE OF SETTING — OF TYING AN NCAA RECORD SET BY ANTHONY DAVIS WITH SIX KICKOFF RETURNS FOR TOUCHDOWNS. BUT HE IS DANGEROUS FROM BACK THERE. 5:56 REMAINING IN THE FIRST QUARTER. MIAMI ONCE AGAIN WITH A LEAD OVER CHICAGO, 10-7. GENTRY HAD A HARD TIME HANDLING IT. BUT HE WORKS IT OUT CLOSE TO THE 25-YARD LINE. FIRST AND 10, THE BEARS, AT THEIR OWN 25-YARD LINE. THAT’S McKINNON, NUMBER 85, IN MOTION. WALTER PAYTON’S FIRST HANDLE OF THE NIGHT. AND HE IS STRONG. PAYTON BOOMS OUT TO THE 30-YARD LINE. PAUL LANKFORD THERE TO MAKE THE STOP FOR THE DOLPHINS. WHEN YOU TACKLE WALTER PAYTON, YOU PAY FOR IT.>>YEAH, YOU HAVE TO HAVE YOUR HELMET ON TIGHT, THAT CHIN STRAP BUTTONED REAL TIGHT. THAT’S TYPICAL OF WALTER ON THAT PLAY, AND REALLY WASN’T MUCH THERE. AND IT’S BECAUSE OF WALTER’S EFFORT AND HIS DETERMINATION, HE GOT FIVE YARDS.>>SHOOTING TO BREAK YOUR RECORD TONIGHT, O.J. HE’S HAD SEVEN CONSECUTIVE 100-YARD GAMES. O.J. AND EARL CAMPBELL TIED FOR THE NFL RECORD ALONG WITH WALTER PAYTON WITH SEVEN CONSECUTIVE 100-YARD GAMES. WALTER GOT 6. SECOND DOWN AND 4. PAYTON WAS OUT OVER THE 35-YARD LINE. HE HAD THE FIRST DOWN BEFORE HE WAS DRILLED BACK BY MIKE CHARLES, WHO MOVED ALONG THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. AND HE IS COMPLAINING BITTERLY THAT HE STOPPED PAYTON SHORT OF THE FIRST DOWN.>>WELL, JOE, YOU MADE THIS POINT ONCE EARLIER IN THE YEAR. IT WAS A GOOD PLAY BY MIKE CHARLES, BUT WHEN YOUR NOSE TACKLE IS MAKING TACKLES FIVE YARDS DOWNFIELD, THAT DOESN’T MAKE THE COACH HAPPY ON THE SIDELINE.>>NO, HE’S SUPPOSED TO HAVE THAT 3-YARD AREA TO HIS RIGHT AND HIS LEFT AND IN FRONT OF HIM, NOT DOWNFIELD.>>FIRST AND 10, BEARS. OUT OVER THE 35-YARD LINE. THEY TRAIL BY 3. 4:23 REMAINING IN THE FIRST QUARTER, AND THE CLOCK IS MOVING. PAYTON. SLIDES IN UNDERNEATH A COUPLE OF DOLPHINS FOR ABOUT A 3-YARD PICKUP. IT’LL BE SECOND DOWN AND 7.>>THIS IS MIKE CHARLES, FORMERLY OF THE OLD LEVITATION DANCE, WHEN THEY ALLOWED YOU TO CELEBRATE AFTER A QUARTERBACK SACK. HE NORMALLY PLAYS DEFENSIVE END. AS YOU CAN SEE, THEY DID A JOB ON HIM ON THAT PLAY. HE’S ABOUT FIVE YARDS FROM THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE, BUT HE MADE THE TACKLE.>>LOOKS LIKE THE HARBOR FREEWAY WHEN YOU’RE PLAYING NOSE TACKLE THERE. EVERYONE BEATS UP ON THE NOSE TACKLE. SECOND DOWN, A LONG 7. THAT’S WILLIE GAULT IN MOTION. FULLER…TRYING TO GET A SCREEN OFF TO PAYTON. PICKED OFF. AND AGAIN TEMPERS FLARE. FLAG IS DOWN. FULLER TRIED TO SUCK THE MIAMI DOLPHINS INTO THE SCREEN. THEY PLAYED IT WELL. BOB BRUDZINSKI COMES UP WITH THE INTERCEPTION. A FLAG IS DOWN. WE’LL SORT THAT OUT FOR YOU IN A MOMENT. BUT THIS IS WHAT TRANSPIRED.>>THEY DID PLAY IT WELL, TOO. YOU SEE BOKAMPER OUT THERE. YOU SEE BRUDZINSKI. THEY HAD THIS THING COVERED. AND IT WAS A BAD PLAY BY STEVE FULLER.>>AND THERE YOU SAW BUD BROWN GETTING IT ON WITH JAY HILGENBERG, AND A FLAG WENT DOWN.>>PERSONAL FOUL, UNNECESSARY ROUGHNESS AFTER THE PLAY, CHICAGO BEARS.>>AND A QUARTERBACK DOESN’T WANT TO TAKE A LOSS –>>15-YARD PENALTY, DEAD-BALL SPOT, AND FIRST DOWN.>>QUARTERBACK DOESN’T WANT TO TAKE A LOSS IN THAT KIND OF PLAY. WANTS TO THROW IT AWAY, BUT WHEN YOU THROW IT OVER A RECEIVER’S HEAD, YOU RISK EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED HERE — THE CHANCE OF THE INTERCEPTION. THROW THE BALL AT THIS FEET, IF POSSIBLE. THROW IT IN THE GROUND.>>NOT WHAT MIKE DITKA HAD IN MIND. AND I’M NOT TALKING ABOUT THE UNNECESSARY ROUGHNESS, BECAUSE HE’S HAD THAT ON HIS MIND MANY TIMES OVER HIS CAREER. BUT KEEP IN MIND, ALSO, THAT JIM McMAHON IS ON THE BENCH. HE IS AVAILABLE. HE THREW SHORT PASSES OVER THE MIDDLE ON THURSDAY, HE THREW DEEP PASSES ON FRIDAY, AND WE’VE BEEN TOLD HE IS READY TO COME IN IF THE BEARS FALTER UNDER STEVE FULLER. THE DOLPHINS HAVE A FIRST DOWN AND 10. THEY’RE NEAR THE 25-YARD LINE. AND MARINO IS BACK. AND HE WAS HURRIED INTO A PASS THAT WAS SHORT OF MARK CLAYTON. IT’LL BE SECOND DOWN AND 10. MARINO WITH THAT FABULOUS YEAR. AND, OF COURSE, CLAYTON WITH HIS 18 TOUCHDOWN RECEPTIONS FOR A NEW NFL RECORD A YEAR AGO. BUT MARINO, OVER 5,000 YARDS, AS THEY SORT OUT ANOTHER PENALTY. 48 TOUCHDOWNS BY MARINO A YEAR AGO. ALL KINDS OF RECORDS. RECORD HAD BEEN 36 TOUCHDOWNS. HE SHATTERED THAT ONE.>>HOLDING, NUMBER 61, OFFENSE. 10-YARD PENALTY. REPEAT FIRST DOWN.>>ROY FOSTER, WHO WILL SPEND MOST OF HIS NIGHT WORKING AGAINST WILLIAM PERRY. BUT MARINO ALSO HAD FOUR GAMES OF 400 YARDS OR MORE A YEAR AGO. NINE GAMES WITH 300 OR MORE. CAME IN LIGHT THIS YEAR, AND DOES NOT HAVE THE KIND OF NUMBERS OF A YEAR AGO. IT’S FIRST DOWN AND 20. WOODY BENNETT. AND BENNETT IS MET AT THE 31-YARD LINE. GAIN OF ABOUT 4. IT’LL BE SECOND DOWN AND 16. WILBER MARSHALL WAS THERE DEFENSIVELY WITH GARY FENCIK.>>WOODY WAS A LITTLE SURPRISED. HE GOT AN EXCELLENT BLOCK FROM NUMBER 79 JON GIESLER ON RICHARD DENT. HE APPEARED AS IF HE WAS READY TO GO DOWN AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE, AND GIESLER BOLTED HIS MAN OVER, AND HE WAS ABLE TO GET OUTSIDE FOR 5 GOOD ONES.>>CLAYTON GOES RIGHT. DUPER TO THE TOP OF YOUR SCREEN. HERE THEY COME. AND DOWN GOES MARINO. THE DOLPHINS HAD GIVEN UP THE FEWEST SACKS INTO TONIGHT IN THE ENTIRE LEAGUE, AND THAT’S THE 14th THAT THEY HAVE GIVEN UP THIS SEASON. AND RICHARD DENT GETS HIS 11th SACK OF THE SEASON.>>EVEN DAN MARINO HAD TIME TO THROW THAT LAST PASS. HE JUST COULDN’T FIND A RECEIVER, AND THEN HE HEARD OR FELT THE FOOTSTEPS COMING FROM THE BACK SIDE. HE SENSED HE WAS GONNA GET HIT. THAT’S WHY HE FOLDED UP. BUT, AGAIN, HE’S TAKING A SHORT DROP AND TRYING TO HIT THE QUICKER PASS, AND THE BEARS JUST DID A GOOD JOB OF COVERING.>>DOLPHINS HAVE LED THE LEAGUE OVER THE PAST THREE YEARS IN FEWEST SACKS. AND THEY HAVE A COMMANDING LEAD ONCE AGAIN THIS SEASON. REFLECTIVE, OF COURSE, OF THE QUICK ARM OF DAN MARINO. THIRD AND 19. NAT MOORE! DUERSON WAS WITH HIM, BUT MOORE TURNED AROUND. THE BALL WAS THERE. AND MARINO JUST DID GET IT OFF. AND A FLAG IS DOWN ONCE AGAIN. [ CROWD CHEERING ] OFFSIDE, BEARS. WATCH NUMBER 72. THE REFRIGERATOR WILLIAM PERRY BEATING THE BLOCK OF FOSTER. GIESLER WAS TRYING TO HELP. BUT THE PASS WAS THERE. MARINO HELD IT TILL THE LAST POSSIBLE SECOND, AND MOORE BEATING DUERSON FOR THE RECEPTION.>>WELL, ONE THING YOU CAN COUNT ON WITH THE DOLPHINS, WHENEVER MOORE COMES INTO THE GAME, THEY HAVE THREE WIDE RECEIVERS. THEY’LL BE LOOKING FOR DUPER — I MEAN, MOORE, BECAUSE MOORE WILL NORMALLY HAVE A SAFETY GUARDING HIM AND NOT A CORNERBACK. IT WAS INTERESTING THAT NAT SAID HE WAS GONNA RETIRE LAST YEAR, FRANK, AND HERE HE IS BACK ANOTHER YEAR. I THINK MARINO HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH THAT.>>DOLPHINS ARE AWESOME HERE AT THE ORANGE BOWL. THEY’VE LOST ONE GAME IN THEIR LAST 18. IRONICALLY, IT WAS ONE YEAR AGO TO THIS DATE, THEY LOST TO THE RAIDERS. FIRST AND 10 AT THE 12-YARD LINE. MARINO IN TROUBLE, AND DOWN HE GOES. OTIS WILSON, WHO TOOK UP RESIDENCY IN THE DALLAS COWBOYS BACKFIELD A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, GETS TO MARINO. ALMOST DéJà VU OF THE WAY HE GOT TO DANNY WHITE A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO WHEN THE BEARS ANNIHILATED THE COWBOYS 44-0. NOBODY EVEN TOUCHED HIM.>>NOW, YOU KNOW, THE DOLPHINS GOT FOOLED THAT LAST TIME. THERE WAS A PLAY-ACTION FAKE, AND MARINO WANTED TO HIT BRUCE HARDY RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE, BUT THE FREE SAFETY OF THE BEARS WAS IN THE HOLE — GARY FENCIK. NORMALLY, HE’D BE UP ON THAT BLITZ SITUATION. THAT TIME HE LAID IN THE HOLE, AND HE TOOK THE BALL AWAY. MARINO COULDN’T THROW IT. HE TOOK THE PASS AWAY FROM HIM.>>SECOND DOWN AND 18. THE BALL AT THE 20-YARD LINE. 1:18 REMAINING IN THE FIRST QUARTER. MIAMI LEADING THE CHICAGO BEARS 10-7. MARINO…DUPER. INSIDE THE 5. IT’LL BE FIRST DOWN, GOAL TO GO. MARINO AGAIN UNDER PRESSURE, BUT HE RIFLED THAT ONE IN THERE. LOTS OF PRESSURE ON MARINO. RIGHT THERE. HELD IT TILL THE LAST POSSIBLE SECOND, AND WHAT TIMING BETWEEN THE RECEIVER AND THE QUARTERBACK.>>OH, HE THREW A STRIKE. AND, AGAIN, THESE MAGICAL MARKS, DUPER AND CLAYTON, ARE SO QUICK AT GETTING TO THE INSIDE AND DOWNFIELD, THE CHICAGO CORNERBACKS OF FRAZIER AND RICHARDSON, WELL, THEY’RE GONNA HAVE THEIR HANDS FULL TONIGHT.>>MIAMI THREATENING TO SCORE ON THEIR THIRD CONSECUTIVE POSSESSION. THEY GOT A TOUCHDOWN. AND THEY GOT THE 47-YARD FIELD GOAL. TONY NATHAN. TO THE 1-YARD LINE. AND THAT WILL BE FIRST DOWN. [ CROWD CHEERING ] AS THE FINAL SECONDS TICK OFF HERE IN THE FIRST QUARTER, AND THESE DOLPHINS WILL GET SOME OVATION. AND CHICAGO IS JUST AS INTERESTED. ONE WOULD SUSPECT THE STREETS OF THE WINDY CITY ARE QUITE EMPTY TONIGHT. THE BEARS HAVE A REMARKABLE RECORD THUS FAR THIS SEASON IN KEEPING TEAMS OUT OF THE END ZONE, EVEN WHEN THEY HAVE A FIRST DOWN AND GOAL TO GO. AND THUS FAR THIS SEASON, THE BEARS HAVE NOT ALLOWED AN OPPOSITION TEAM TO SCORE ON THEIR FIRST THREE POSSESSIONS. THE DOLPHINS ARE THREATENING TO DO JUST THAT AND EXTEND THEIR LEAD, AS WE BEGIN THE SECOND QUARTER. THE DOLPHINS LEADING THE BEARS 10-7.>>KEEP YOUR EYE ON NUMBER 30. HIS NAME IS RON DAVENPORT. HE’S CARRIED THE BALL SIX TIMES THIS YEAR INSIDE THE 5-YARD LINE, AND HE HAS SCORED ALL SIX TIMES.>>I KNOW WHO I’D GIVE IT TO, THEN. FIRST DOWN, GOAL TO GO. MARINO. TRIED TO GET THE BALL TO DAVENPORT THROUGH THE AIR. HE WAS WELL-COVERED. OTIS WILSON ALL OVER DAVENPORT. THE BRAIN TRUST ON THE SIDELINES, AND THE PLAY COMES IN. IT’LL BE LORENZO HAMPTON COMING IN TO THE OFFENSIVE SET. THE 12-0 CHICAGO BEARS, IF THEY CAN GO ALL THE WAY, THEY WOULD BE 19-0. THE LAST UNDEFEATED TEAM IN PRO-FOOTBALL HISTORY — THESE MIAMI DOLPHINS. IN ’72. 14-0 REGULAR SEASON. AFTER THE SUPER BOWL, THEY WERE 17-0. LED THE LEAGUE IN FEWEST POINTS ALLOWED AND MOST POINTS SCORED. THE BEARS COME INTO TONIGHT’S GAME LEADING IN THOSE SAME CATEGORIES. TOUCHDOWN! DAVENPORT, INSIDE TRAP.>>7 FOR 7.>>LOOK AT IT AGAIN. THE TRAP IN THE MIDDLE. PERFECTLY EXECUTED. DAVENPORT BEAUTIFULLY READS IT INTO THE END ZONE. REVEIZ FOR THE CONVERSION. THEY LOVE IT IN MIAMI. IT’S HURTING IN CHICAGO. WE’RE EARLY IN THE SECOND QUARTER, AND THE MIAMI DOLPHINS ARE LEADING THE CHICAGO BEARS 17-7. DEEP, WILLIE GAULT, NUMBER 83. DENNIS GENTRY, NUMBER 29. AND AGAIN GAULT GOING TO THE RIGHT. AND HERE’S REVEIZ. GAULT FROM THE 7-YARD LINE. AND GAULT OUT CLOSE TO THE 30-YARD LINE, WHERE IT’LL BE FIRST DOWN AND 10. TREMENDOUS CROWD HERE AT THE ORANGE BOWL. JOE ROBBIE, THE OWNER, SAID HE HAD NOT SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS, THE WAY THIS TOWN WAS UPSIDE DOWN, IN THE 20-YEAR HISTORY OF THE FRANCHISE. JOE ROBBIE BREAKING GROUND YESTERDAY FOR A NEW STADIUM THAT WILL HOST THE SUPER BOWL DOWN THE LINE. HE’S HAD AN UPHILL BATTLE, BUT HE IS A TOUGH COOKIE. HE HUNG WITH IT. ON FIRST AND 10. FULLER JUST DOES GET IT OFF, AND HE GETS IT TO EMERY MOOREHEAD, HIS TIGHT END. OUT TO THE 35-YARD LINE. GAIN OF 6. IT’LL BE SECOND DOWN AND 4. BROPHY IN THERE DEFENSIVELY FOR THE DOLPHINS. EMERY MOOREHEAD, A FORMER STARTER FOR SEVERAL YEARS WITH THE GIANTS, WHO WENT OUT TO DENVER. NOW IN HIS FOURTH YEAR WITH THE BEARS. STEVE FULLER BRINGS THEM UP. FULLER HAS STARTED THE LAST THREE GAMES, WHILE JIM McMAHON, THE NFC’s LEADING QUARTERBACK, HAS RECUPERATED FROM AN INJURED SHOULDER THAT HE PICKED UP FOUR WEEKS AGO. WALTER PAYTON. A RELATIVELY QUIET NIGHT FOR PAYTON THUS FAR, BUT HE GETS THE FIRST DOWN OUT OVER THE 40-YARD LINE. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT THE NUMBERS FOR THE FIRST QUARTER. I THINK EVEN DOLPHINS FANS WERE A LITTLE SURPRISED AT THE WAY THEY CAME OUT AND JUST EXPLODED OFF THE LINE AGAINST THESE BEARS. SCORING ON EACH OF THEIR FIRST THREE POSSESSIONS. NO ONE HAS DONE THAT TO THE BEARS THIS SEASON. THE BEARS ALSO GIVING UP THEIR FIRST TOUCHDOWN IN 13 QUARTERS. THEY HAVE BEEN AWESOME INTO TONIGHT. FIRST AND 10, 41-YARD LINE. FULLER. MOOREHEAD. SHORT OF THE FIRST DOWN NEAR MIDFIELD. MARK BROWN WAS BACK THERE, AND IT DOES APPEAR AS THOUGH THE DOLPHINS ARE TRYING TO STAY WITH MOOREHEAD WITH A LINEBACKER. AND HE’S A PRETTY SPEEDY TIGHT END.>>WELL, WHAT THEY DID THAT TIME, FRANK, THEY JUST DROPPED BACK. MIAMI WENT TO A ZONE DEFENSE, AND MARK BROWN AND JAY BROPHY DROPPED BACK ABOUT 9 TO 10 YARDS. AND MOOREHEAD JUST RELEASED TO THE INSIDE FROM HIS TIGHT-END POSITION. HE WAS WIDE-OPEN AS SOON AS HE LEFT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE.>>HE GOT 9 OUT OF IT. SECOND DOWN AND 1. FULLER IS 3 OF 6 FOR 84 YARDS. HAS THE ONE TOUCHDOWN AND THE ONE INTERCEPTION. FULLER. McKINNON DOES NOT HOLD ON. HE WOULD’VE HAD THE FIRST DOWN AT THE 25-YARD LINE OF MIAMI, BUT HE WAS HIT AND HIT HARD. McKINNON GOT OFF TO A TREMENDOUS START THIS SEASON, BUT OVER THE LAST FIVE GAMES, HE’S ONLY HAD FOUR RECEPTIONS. REALLY CAN’T FAULT A RECEIVER AT THIS POINT. ONE HE SHOULD’VE CAUGHT, YEAH, BUT LOOK AT THAT. AND HE KNEW THAT WAS COMING. THIRD DOWN. IT’S A LONG 1 FOR THE BEARS. FULLER, AS HE DID DOWN NEAR THE GOAL LINE, PICKS UP THE FIRST DOWN. HE’S CLOSE TO THE 47-YARD LINE OF THE DOLPHINS.>>WELL, I GET THE FEELING THAT CHICAGO IS TRYING TO MAYBE WEAR THIS DOLPHIN DEFENSE DOWN SOMEWHAT AND THEN START BEATING THEM UP LATER WITH PAYTON. EVERY TIME THEY’VE RUN WALTER, HE’S GOTTEN ABOUT 5 YARDS, AND I EXPECTED TONIGHT FOR HIM TO CARRY THE BALL ABOUT 25 TIMES — 25 TO 30 TIMES.>>WILLIE GAULT GOES TO THE BOTTOM OF YOUR SCREEN. UP AT THE TOP IS DENNIS McKINNON. PAYTON, THE SINGLE SET BACK. FULLER. MOOREHEAD. AND FULLER AND THE TIGHT END MOOREHEAD CONTINUE TO WORK. IT’LL BE ANOTHER BEAR FIRST DOWN. WE’RE GOING TO PAUSE FIVE SECONDS AND ALLOW OUR STATIONS TO IDENTIFY THEMSELVES. CHICAGO BEARS — THEY’RE 12-0, LOOKING GO TO ALL THE WAY UNDEFEATED. RUNNING INTO TROUBLE WITH THE MIAMI DOLPHINS HERE TONIGHT. THE DOLPHINS, OF COURSE, THEY WOULD LIKE TO PREVENT THE BEARS FROM REPLACING THEM AS THE WINNINGEST TEAM FOR A SINGLE SEASON IN THE HISTORY OF THIS GAME. THEY WERE 17-0 IN 1972. BUT THEY’RE MORE CONCERNED WITH NEW ENGLAND AND THE JETS. NEW ENGLAND IS 9-4, THE JETS ARE 9-4, AND THE DOLPHINS ARE INTO TONIGHT AT 8-4. A WIN TONIGHT, AND THEY’RE TIED ONCE AGAIN FOR FIRST PLACE IN THE AFC EAST. WALTER PAYTON. PAYTON DOING HIS SPECIAL THING TO THE 26-YARD LINE. HE’S STOPPED BY JUDSON. A PICKUP OF ABOUT 9.>>HE GETS GOOD BLOCKING ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THAT LINE, BUT — ONLY WALTER, HE CAN SEE IT ALL. HE GETS OUTSIDE, OUTRUNS THE PURSUIT, PUT A VERY NICE MOVE IN HERE SOMEWHERE. THAT’S WALTER. THERE IT IS. [ CHUCKLES ] I TELL YOU, HE NEVER GETS TIRED. HE LOVES RUNNING THE FOOTBALL. I’D RUN HIM ALL NIGHT TONIGHT.>>OF ALL HIS RECORDS, ALL HIS STATS, AGAIN, I’LL SAY IT, I’M MORE IMPRESSED WITH THE FACT THIS IS HIS 149th CONSECUTIVE START TONIGHT. THAT’S GOT TO STAND ALONE AMONG ALL RUNNING BACKS. OVER THE FINGERTIPS OF WILLIE GAULT. AND PERHAPS FORTUNATE FOR WILLIE GAULT THAT IT WAS. ‘CAUSE HE HAD BEEN LINED UP IN THE SIGHTS OF LANKFORD AND BUD BROWN. IT’LL BE THIRD DOWN AND 1.>>IF I WAS GUARDING McKINNON, I THINK I’D –>>SAY, “HOW ABOUT A LITTLE OUT?”>>YEAH, I’D TAKE HIM ON THE SIDELINE AND SAY, “HEY, JUST THROW THE BALL AND BRING IT DOWN SOMEWHAT.”>>[ CHUCKLES ]>>AGAIN, JIM McMAHON IS ABLE TO GO TONIGHT. WE WERE TOLD THAT. WE WERE TOLD A FEW WEEKS AGO AT MINNESOTA, HE WAS THE DISASTER QUARTERBACK. THEY BROUGHT HIM IN WHEN THE BEARS WERE 8 POINTS DOWN, AND HE THREW THREE TOUCHDOWNS. BOOM, BOOM, BOOM. AND THE BEARS WON THAT ONE GOING AWAY. PAYTON HAS A FIRST DOWN DOWN NEAR THE 22-YARD LINE. MARK BROWN IS THERE DEFENSIVELY.>>THERE HE IS. I’LL TELL YOU, THERE’S BIG JIM McMAHON, AND HE IS THE CATALYST OF THIS OFFENSIVE FOOTBALL TEAM. BUT I’LL TELL YOU WHAT, I WOULDN’T PLAY HIM TONIGHT UNDER ANY — WELL, IF TOMCZAK COULDN’T PLAY AFTER FULLER, THEN I’D PLAY McMAHON. I DON’T THINK HE’S READY. HE’S ONLY PRACTICED THIS WEEK. HE’S BEEN OUT THE LAST THREE WEEKS. HE HAS INFLAMMATION OF THE SHOULDER, WHICH NEEDS REST. THEY HAVE INDIANAPOLIS NEXT WEEK. I’D HOLD HIM OUT. A CHAMPIONSHIP DRIVE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THIS ONE GAME.>>AND, OF COURSE, AT 12-0, THEY HAVE CLINCHED HOME-FIELD ADVANTAGE AS LONG AS THEY CONTINUE TO WIN IN THE PLAYOFFS. ON FIRST DOWN, PAYTON. PAYTON. HE IS HIT AT THE 20-YARD LINE. GETS TO THE 19-YARD LINE.>>BUT I’LL TELL YOU ANOTHER REASON I WOULDN’T USE HIM, TOO. IF YOU PULL FULLER IN THIS GAME WITHOUT FULLER BEING HURT, THAT’S SAYING FULLER CAN’T WIN THE BIG GAMES FOR YOU. NOW, HE’S WON THE LAST THREE GAMES, BUT IT’S BEEN MOSTLY BECAUSE OF THE DEFENSIVE EFFORT BY THE BEARS. LAST SEASON, WHEN THEY GOT IN THE NFC FINAL, THEY COULDN’T SCORE A POINT WITH FULLER AT QUARTERBACK. YOU PULL FULLER OUT OF THIS GAME, AND YOU’RE TELLING YOUR WHOLE FOOTBALL TEAM, “WE CAN’T COUNT ON FULLER.”>>MEANWHILE, THE MIAMI DEFENSE, RATED 26th IN THE NFL, PUTTING ON QUITE A SHOW HERE IN THE ORANGE BOWL TONIGHT. SECOND DOWN AND 8. FULLER. GAULT HOLDS ON. HE GETS INSIDE THE 10-YARD LINE. IT’LL BE FIRST DOWN, GOAL TO GO. GOOD, QUICK TIMING PATTERN BETWEEN GAULT AND QUARTERBACK STEVE FULLER. WILLIAM JUDSON WAS TRYING TO COVER GAULT, BUT YOU HAVE TO RESPECT HIS SPEED. HE LAID WAY OFF. GAULT WAS THERE. HUGH GREEN, RIGHT LINEBACKER, WAS DROPPING INTO IT, TOOK HIS EYES OFF THE QUARTERBACK, AND THE PASS WAS COMPLETE.>>YEAH, I’M SURPRISED THE WAY HE WAS LAYING OFF WITH THAT MUCH FIELD TO COVER. HECK, THEY WERE ONLY ON THE 20-YARD LINE. HE WAS GIVING HIM TOO BIG A CUSHION.>>12th PLAY OF THIS DRIVE. IT STARTED AT THE 29-YARD LINE OF THE BEARS. ON FIRST AND GOAL. FULLER. THE CROWD WILL BOO. THEY’LL WANT A “THROWING THE BALL AWAY” PENALTY. THEY’RE GOING TO GET IT.>>IT’S THE OLD “IN THE GRASP” CALL IS WHAT THAT LAST ONE WAS. THE OFFICIAL BLEW THE WHISTLE, SAID FULLER WAS IN THE GRASP. AND WHAT DETERMINES THAT IS THE FACT THAT, IF THE DEFENSIVE PLAYER HAS CONTROL OF THE QUARTERBACK IN THE REFEREE’S OPINION. AND THAT’S WHAT HE CALLED THAT TIME.>>SO THE BEARS ARE BACK TO THE 17-YARD LINE NOW OF THE DOLPHINS. SECOND DOWN, GOAL TO GO. IT’S A GOOD PENALTY. PROBABLY SAVED A LOT OF QUARTERBACKS. WE’VE LOST OF THEM THIS SEASON. THINK IF IT WASN’T THERE. WALTER PAYTON. TRIED TO RIP BACK INSIDE. RUNS INTO DOUG BETTERS, AND DOWN HE GOES. BUT HE GETS IT BACK TO THE 13-YARD LINE. IT’LL BE THIRD DOWN AND GOAL TO GO AT THE 13-YARD LINE.>>NOW, THAT PLAY, TO ME, IS WHY I’M AMAZED BY WALTER PAYTON’S CAREER STATISTICS. WALTER DOESN’T HAVE THAT EXCEPTIONAL SPEED THAT SOME BACKS IN THIS LEAGUE HAVE. A GUY LIKE DICKERSON WOULD’VE JUST TAKEN OFF OUTSIDE AND BEEN ABLE TO OUTRUN SOME OF THAT PURSUIT ON THAT PLAY. WALTER HAS BEEN ABLE TO DO IT WITHOUT THAT FOURTH OR FIFTH GEAR, AND THAT’S SIMPLY AMAZING TO GET THE YARDS THAT HE HAS WITHOUT THAT SUPERSPEED SOME BACKS HAVE.>>CHUCK STUDLEY, DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR, HUSTLES IN THE PREVENT DEFENSE FOR THE DOLPHINS. THEY’RE THINKING PASS. PAYTON WILL THROW THE BALL. BOY, HE HUNG UP ONE FOR GRABS. TRIED TO GET IT BACK TO FULLER. THAT’LL BE INCOMPLETE. PAYTON HAS THROWN THE BALL MANY TIMES OVER HIS CAREER. BUT THAT TIME, THAT REALLY COULD’VE BEEN DANGEROUS. AND THERE IS A DOLPHIN THAT IS SLOW GETTING UP. THAT’S WILLIAM JUDSON. AND WE’LL SEE THE PLACEKICKING UNIT COMING OUT FOR THE CHICAGO BEARS. THAT WILL MEAN KEVIN BUTLER. HE’S HAVING A TREMENDOUS YEAR. 6:45 REMAINING IN THE FIRST HALF. MIAMI OVER CHICAGO, 17-7. REMEMBER BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID BACK IN ’72? THEY’RE THEY ARE. JIM KIICK ON THE LEFT. THAT’S LARRY CSONKA ON THE RIGHT. WE’RE GONNA TALK TO LARRY CSONKA AT HALFTIME ABOUT WHAT IT WAS LIKE BEING INVOLVED IN THAT UNDEFEATED TEAM THAT WENT 17-0 IN 1972. THEY DIDN’T DO BAD. IN ’73, THEY CAME BACK AND WENT 12-2. THAT’S WHAT THE BEARS ARE TRYING TO ECLIPSE THIS SEASON. AND WE’RE ALSO GOING TO WATCH WILLIAM PERRY, THE REFRIGERATOR. JUDD ROSE HAS A VERY INTERESTING PIECE ON HIM. AND, OF COURSE, SOME KEY HIGHLIGHTS FROM YESTERDAY. FIELD-GOAL ATTEMPT BY KEVIN BUTLER. 30 YARDS. THIS TO SHORTEN THE DOLPHIN LEAD. AND BUTLER, WHO HAS HAD A TREMENDOUS YEAR, THE FOURTH-ROUND PICK FROM GEORGIA, GETS IT THROUGH THE UPRIGHTS. HE IS 16 OF HIS LAST 17 ATTEMPTS, AND THE BEARS NOW TRAIL BY 7. YOU’VE GOT TO BE ENJOYING THIS ONE TONIGHT. THE CHICAGO BEARS, 12-0, GOING AGAINST THE DOLPHINS, 8-4, TRYING TO STAY WITH THE JETS AND NEW ENGLAND IN THEIR AFC EASTERN DIVISION. WE’RE DELIGHTED THAT MOST OF OUR ABC AFFILIATE BOARD OF GOVERNORS ARE OUT IN PHOENIX, ARIZONA, AND THAT WE HOPEFULLY CAN VISUALIZE YOU GLUED TO YOUR T.V. SET. BUTLER HITS IT, AND LORENZO HAMPTON WILL BRING IT OUT. AND HAMPTON OVER THE 20-YARD LINE TO THE 21. IT WAS INTERESTING, THECHICAGO TRIBUNECENTERFOLD TODAY, OF THEIR SPORTS PAGE. ON THEIR ALL-TIME BEARS TEAM, THEY HAD WHO YOU THOUGHT MIGHT BE ON THAT TEAM — SID LUCKMAN, BUTKUS, BRONKO NAGURSKI, MIKE DITKA. BUT THEY ALSO HAD A LOT OF THESE MODERN BEARS — DAN HAMPTON, WALTER PAYTON, OF COURSE, MIKE SINGLETARY — AMONG MANY. BUT IT REALLY SHOWS YOU THE WAY THESE BEARS HAVE TURNED ON THE CITY OF CHICAGO. TWO PAGES LISTING THE ALL-TIME BEARS. THEY HAVE THAT CITY UPSIDE DOWN, AS YOU’LL SEE AT HALFTIME WHEN WE PROFILE WILLIAM PERRY. FIRST AND 10, MIAMI. THEIR 21-YARD LINE. MARINO…DUPER. AND COVERING DUPER QUICKLY, LESLIE FRAZIER. SEVEN CONSECUTIVE 100-YARD GAMES FOR WALTER PAYTON. IF HE GETS AN EIGHTH ONE TONIGHT, HE’LL STAND ALONE FOR THE NFL RECORD FOR CONSECUTIVE 100-YARD GAMES. HE’S STRUGGLING TONIGHT.>>I DON’T THINK HE’S STRUGGLING. THEY’RE JUST NOT GIVING HIM THE BALL ENOUGH. WHEN YOU’RE AVERAGING NEAR FIVE YARDS A CARRY, ALL YOU NEED IS THE BALL.>>AND A LITTLE BLOCKING. [ CHUCKLING ]>>WELL, I THOUGHT HE WAS STRUGGLING. SECOND DOWN AND 6. MARINO CHANGING IT OFF. MARINO FIRES TO NATHAN. AND MR. VERSATILITY GETS A DOLPHIN FIRST DOWN OUT TO THE 37-YARD LINE, AND A FLAG IS DOWN. SO, THE EFFORT — MARINO TO NATHAN — WILL BE NEGATED. HOLDING AGAINST MIAMI.>>HOLDING, NUMBER 76, OFFENSE. 10-YARD PENALTY. REPEAT SECOND DOWN.>>STEVE CLARK, HIS SECOND HOLDING PENALTY. HE PRIMARILY IS WORKING TONIGHT AGAINST HIS COUNTERPART WITH THE SAME NUMBER — STEVE McMICHAEL.>>WELL, STEVE CLARK, LAST WEEK, THEY SAID HE HAD A GOOD GAME AGAINST BUFFALO. WELL, MOST TEAMS IN THIS LEAGUE WILL PLAY A 30 DEFENSE, SO SOMETIMES IT’S EASY FOR A GUARD TO HAVE A GOOD GAME IN THAT SITUATION ‘CAUSE THERE’S NOT A DEFENSIVE PLAYER LINED UP RIGHT ON HIS NOSE TO GET ANGLE BLOCKS. FOUR-MAN, DEFENSIVE GUY’S RIGHT IN HIS FACE.>>SECOND DOWN, 16. NATHAN. GETS AWAY FROM A COUPLE OF BEARS AND GETS BACK TO THE ORIGINAL LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. HE MIGHT’VE SQUEAKED A YARD OUT OF IT BEFORE MIKE SINGLETARY PUTS HIM AWAY. MIKE SINGLETARY, BY THE WAY, ON THATCHICAGO TRIBUNECENTERFOLD ALL-TIME BEAR TEAM. AS WELL HE SHOULD BE. AND THERE IS THE FRIDGE. YOU TALK ABOUT AN APPLIANCE. HE’S DOWN TO ABOUT 308.>>[ CHUCKLES ]>>AND BUDDY RYAN, THE DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR, SAW HIM IN TRAINING CAMP. HE SAID, “WE’VE WASTED A FIRST-ROUND DRAFT PICK.” BUT IN THOSE DAYS, HE LOOKED MORE LIKE A WATERBED THAN A REFRIGERATOR. HE HAS TRIMMED DOWN CONSIDERABLY. THIRD AND LONG FROM THE SHOTGUN. MARINO! DUPER! NO FLAGS. MARINO — AND THAT’S NOT HIS THING, SCRAMBLING AROUND. BUT DUPER DID NOT GIVE UP ON HIM, AND HE KNEW THAT MARINO HAD THE ARM.>>AND I WOULDN’T BE SURPRISED IF THIS WASN’T DESIGNED. DAN DID NOT HAVE TO LEAVE THAT POCKET. THEY ONLY HAD A THREE-MAN RUSH. HE SIMPLY WENT OUT THERE TO BUY TIME. THAT WAS A PREDESIGNED PLAY FOR DAN TO LEAVE THE POCKET.>>THAT’S PRETTY CURIOUS TO ME, JOE, THAT WE’RE TALKING ABOUT THE CHICAGO BEARS, THE TEAM THAT THRIVES ON PUTTING PRESSURE ON THE QUARTERBACK, BUT ONLY RUSHED THREE MEN IN THAT SITUATION.>>AND PLAYED ZONE COVERAGE THAT TIME, WHEN DUERSON THIS MORNING IN THE MEETING, TOLD US THAT THEY’D STICK WITH THEIR MAN-TO-MAN BLITZING-TYPE DEFENSES BECAUSE THEY COULDN’T GIVE MARINO TIME TO PICK THE ZONE APART. WELL, THAT TIME THEY WENT INTO THE ZONE. MARINO BOUGHT TIME AND WAS WIDE-OPEN. THIS COULD BE A MAJOR PROBLEM FOR THE DOLPHINS. DWIGHT STEPHENSON, THEIR ALL-PRO CENTER, MAY HAVE A HAND PROBLEM.>>ALL RIGHT, FIRST DOWN AND 10. THE BALL AT THE 30-YARD LINE. ROY FOSTER HAS MOVED TO CENTER. MARINO. THROWS THAT ONE AWAY. FOSTER HAS MOVED OVER TO CENTER, AND JUST ABOUT THE LAST HEALTHY OFFENSIVE LINEMAN MIAMI HAS IS DELLENBACH, THE ROOKIE FROM WISCONSIN, A FOURTH-ROUND DRAFT PICK. AND HE HAS MOVED INTO FOSTER’S LEFT-GUARD POSITION. BUT NOW, PROBABLY WITH A SIGH OF RELIEF, DON SHULA PUTS STEPHENSON BACK IN. HE HAS BEEN ABOUT THE ONLY HEALTHY LINEMAN THE DOLPHINS HAVE HAD THROUGHOUT THIS SEASON.>>IT LOOKED LIKE HE WAS HOLDING HIS RIGHT HAND, AND HE’S A RIGHT-HANDED SNAPPER. IF THAT’S THE CASE, THEY’RE GONNA HAVE A PROBLEM WITH SOME OF THE EXCHANGES, ESPECIALLY OUT OF THE SHOTGUN.>>IF IT CAN BE DONE, DWIGHT STEPHENSON WILL DO IT. I THINK… I THINK — WELL, NOT EVEN ARGUABLY, MAYBE THE BEST CENTER IN THE GAME TODAY. HE IS REALLY SOMETHING. SECOND AND 10. NATHAN. HE WORKS DOWN TO THE 27-YARD LINE. A GAIN OF ABOUT 3. IT’LL BE THIRD DOWN AND 7. THAT’S THE TIME REMAINING IN THE FIRST HALF. AND STEPHENSON IS OUT AGAIN. AND YOU HIT IT RIGHT ON THE NOSE. HE’S HOLDING THAT RIGHT SIDE, AND THEY’RE LOOKING, HOWEVER, AT THE SHOULDER. SO A PROBLEM FOR THE DOLPHINS. THEIR OFFENSIVE LINE HAS BEEN INJURY-WRACKED ALL SEASON. ED NEWMAN WENT OUT IN PRESEASON, THE OFFENSIVE GUARD. JEFF TOEWS GONE FOR THE YEAR WITH A KNEE INJURY. ERIC LAAKSO DIDN’T COME BACK FROM INJURY A YEAR AGO, AND BOB KUECHENBERG RETIRED. CLEVELAND GREEN IS STILL HURT. THIRD DOWN AND 7. MARINO! CLAYTON! CLAYTON DANCES DOWN INSIDE THE 5 INSIDE THE 2. MARINO UNDER TREMENDOUS PRESSURE. THAT ONE SIDE-ARMED TO CLAYTON, WHO FLAT PREDICTED A WIN OVER THESE BEARS THIS PAST WEEK. AND HE CONTRIBUTED A LOT RIGHT HERE.>>YOU SAW ONE THING CLAYTON WAS ABLE TO DO. HE IS SO QUICK. ONE OF THE REASONS SHULA LIKES SMALL RECEIVERS OVER THE YEARS — HE’S ALWAYS HAD SMALL-TYPE GUYS — IS THAT THEY’RE HARD TO BUMP. THEY’RE HARD TO TRAP AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. AND WHEN YOU GET GUYS AS SHIFTY AS THESE GUYS ARE, IF YOU DON’T SLOW THEM UP AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE, YOU’RE GONNA HAVE A TOUGH TIME COVERING THEM. IT APPEARS AS IF HE GOT HIT IN THE EYE ON THE PLAY.>>EITHER THE NOSE OR THE EYE. FIRST DOWN, GOAL TO GO. THE DOLPHINS COME UP, AND THEY HAVE DWIGHT STEPHENSON BACK AT CENTER. RON DAVENPORT. HE DOESN’T GET IN. THE BEARS RIGHT SIDE, HEADED BY OTIS WILSON AND RICHARD DENT, MAKE THE STOP.>>WELL, NOW, FOR BEING 7 FOR 7, YOU KNEW IT HAD TO END SOONER OR LATER FOR RON DAVENPORT — THE FIRST TIME HE’S CARRIED THE BALL INSIDE THE 5 HE DIDN’T SCORE. I HAVE A FEELING HE’S GONNA GET THE BALL AGAIN, THOUGH, JOE.>>THAT’S STILL A PRETTY GOOD PERCENTAGE.>>2-MINUTE WARNING. BOTH THE BEARS AND THE DOLPHINS HAVE THEIR FULL COMPLIMENT OF TIME-OUTS — THREE APIECE. WARM, HUMID NIGHT HERE IN SOUTHERN FLORIDA — THE ORANGE BOWL IN MIAMI. BRUTAL FOOTBALL GAME. HARD-HITTING GAME. DOLPHINS SURPRISINGLY STRONG ON DEFENSE AGAINST THE CHICAGO BEARS. AND THEY’RE GETTING THE BIG PLAY FROM THIS MAN — MARINO AND HIS WIDE RECEIVERS. SECOND DOWN, GOAL TO GO. THE BALL INSIDE THE 1. 2 MINUTES REMAINING IN THE FIRST HALF. DAVENPORT. INTO THE END ZONE EASILY. OH, DO THEY LOVE IT HERE. HIS SECOND TOUCHDOWN OF THE NIGHT. SIXTH-ROUND DRAFT PICK OUT OF LOUISVILLE. REMEMBER THREE YEARS AGO, THEY HAD AN EIGHTH-ROUND DRAFT PICK OUT OF LOUISVILLE. THAT WAS MARK CLAYTON. FUAD REVEIZ SPLITS THE UPRIGHTS. ANOTHER FLAG IS DOWN OUT AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. DOLPHINS TELL US IT’S AGAINST THE BEARS. THE CONVERSION WILL STAND.>>OFFSIDE ON THE DEFENSIVE LINE. LINED UP OFFSIDE. THE POINT IS GOOD. 5 YARDS ON THE KICKOFF.>>MIAMI WILL BE KICKING OFF FROM THEIR OWN 40-YARD LINE. THE BEARS AWAITING THE KICKOFF OF FUAD REVEIZ. THE MIAMI DOLPHINS GETTING THE BEARS’ ATTENTION TONIGHT. THEY LEAD 24-10. REVEIZ PUTS THIS ONE UP TALL AND LONG. GAULT WILL NOT BRING THAT OUT, SO THE BEARS WILL HAVE THE BALL AT THE 20-YARD LINE. THE BEARS, IN THE LAST 74 POSSESSIONS THEIR OPPONENTS HAD AGAINST THEM, ALLOWED ONLY FOUR SCORES. TONIGHT THE DOLPHINS HAVE HAD FOUR POSSESSIONS. THEY HAVE SCORED THREE TOUCHDOWNS AND ONE FIELD GOAL. THAT’S WHAT I MEANT, THE DOLPHINS GETTING THE BEARS’ ATTENTION. FULLER. NOTHING DOING DOWNFIELD. HE HAD A LOT OF TIME. HE’S SACKED BY BRUDZINSKI. BRUDZINSKI DOESN’T GET A LOT OF SACKS. THAT’S HIS THIRD OF THE SEASON. AND WITH 1:52 REMAINING IN THE FIRST HALF, THE BEARS WILL CALL TIME-OUT. MIKE DITKA WANTS TO TALK TO FULLER. SECOND DOWN AND 16 FOLLOWING THE SACK. FULLER. WALTER PAYTON. PAYTON’S FIRST RECEPTION OF THE NIGHT. HUGH GREEN, DEFENSIVELY THERE, MADE THE STOP. OUTSIDE LINEBACKER WITH SO MANY ALL-PRO YEARS WITH TAMPA BAY. ACQUIRED BY MIAMI FOUR WEEKS AGO. THE DOLPHINS GAVE UP A FIRST-ROUND DRAFT PICK AND A SECOND-ROUND DRAFT PICK THEY GOT FROM MINNESOTA FOR THE RIGHTS TO ANTHONY CARTER TO GET HUGH GREEN. AND HE’S BEEN SLOW WORKING INTO IT, BUT HE’S BEEN COMING ON WITH EACH WEEK. THIRD DOWN AND 11.>>INTERESTING SEEING THAT STAT. WALTER PAYTON, WITH ALL THE RUSHING YARDS HE HAS, HAS OVER 400 RECEPTIONS. AMAZING.>>ABOUT TO REPLACE TONY GALBREATH AS THE ALL-TIME LEADING RECEIVER AS A RUNNING BACK. FULLER ON THE SCRAMBLE. TAKEN DOWN FROM BEHIND BY BRUDZINSKI. AND NOW WILL THE DOLPHINS CALL ANOTHER TIME-OUT TO STOP THE CLOCK? IT’S FOURTH DOWN. [ CHEERS AND APPLAUSE ] THE WORD IS ON MARK CLAYTON IS THAT HE WAS POKED IN THE EYE, HAD A LITTLE BIT OF BLURRED VISION, BUT HE WILL BE BACK. BUFORD IS BEING CALLED UPON TO LOFT ONE OUT OF BEAR TERRITORY. TOMMY VIGORITO RESPECTS HIM TO THE DOLPHINS’ 35-YARD LINE. 1:34 REMAINING IN THE HALF. DOLPHINS HAVE ONE TIME-OUT. BLOCKED! DOLPHINS SURGING IN ON THE KICKER, BUFORD. SMOTHERED HIM. THEY WERE ALL OVER HIM. IF ONE HADN’T HAVE GOT IT, ANOTHER WOULD. WATCH IT AGAIN. IT APPEARED TO BE NUMBER 52, ROBIN SENDLEIN. NO, IT’S RIGHT UP THE MIDDLE. WILLIAM JUDSON. SENDLEIN WAS THERE. LYLE BLACKWOOD WAS THERE. SENDLEIN MAKES THE RECOVERY AT THE 6. IT’S FIRST DOWN AND GOAL TO GO. FIRST BLOCKED PUNT AGAINST BUFORD IN THREE YEARS. THE DOLPHINS ARE FIRED UP? YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT. THEY WANT TO WIN TONIGHT BECAUSE OF THE DIVISION STANDINGS, BUT THEY’D LIKE TO KEEP THE BEARS FROM GOING ON THAT UNDEFEATED RAMPAGE AND WOULD REPLACE THEM AS THE WINNINGEST TEAM FOR A SINGLE SEASON. IN AND OUT OF THE FINGERTIPS OF BRUCE HARDY. IT’LL BE SECOND DOWN AND GOAL TO GO. THE CLOCK STOPPED WITH 1:22 REMAINING HERE IN THE FIRST HALF. 24-10 LEAD, MIAMI OVER CHICAGO. AGAIN, WE WILL SPECULATE THAT MIKE DITKA COULD COME BACK WITH JIM McMAHON. HE’S HEALTHY, READY TO GO. I AGREE WITH JOE TO ONE RESPECT. WHY USE HIM? YOU HAVE LOCKED UP HOME-FIELD ADVANTAGE, BUT YOU HAVE TO USE HIM SOONER OR LATER IF HE’S GONNA BE YOUR MAN TO TAKE YOU INTO THE PLAYOFFS AND HOPEFULLY TO THE SUPER BOWL. DWIGHT STEPHENSON REMAINS THE CENTER EVEN THOUGH IN PAIN WITH A RIGHT-SHOULDER INJURY FOR THE DOLPHINS. MARINO GETS SOME PRESSURE, BUT HE GETS IT TO NAT MOORE. MARINO HAS BEEN BUFFETED ABOUT, BUT HE’S KEPT HIS CALM AND HIS COOL, AND HE’S FIRING STRIKES. AND THE BEARS ARE IN DEEP TROUBLE.>>HERE YOU SEE NAT MOORE GOING TO THE RIGHT OF YOUR SCREEN. MAYBE YOU’LL SEE HIM. AND HE JUST HAPPENS TO FOOL WILBER MARSHALL, NUMBER 58. BEATS HIM TO THE OUTSIDE. SECOND-YEAR LINEBACKER OUT OF FLORIDA. COULDN’T GET ON THAT COVERAGE.>>KEY CATCHES TONIGHT FOR THE 12-YEAR VETERAN, NAT MOORE. THREE TIMES HE’S COME DOWN WITH THE FOOTBALL. 61 YARDS AND A COUPLE OF TOUCHDOWNS. REVEIZ WITH THE CONVERSION. HYSTERIA HERE IN THE ORANGE BOWL.>>NAT MOORE TOLD US LAST YEAR HE WAS DEFINITELY GONNA RETIRE. HE WAS A STAR PLAYER IN THIS LEAGUE. THEY MADE HIM A THIRD RECEIVER, A BACKUP RECEIVER. HE DIDN’T THINK HIS EGO COULD HANDLE THAT. HE SAID HE WOULD RETIRE. BUT HE REALIZED THAT THE WAY THEY PLAY BALL — THEY PLAY SITUATIONS, SUBSTITUTIONS. EVERYBODY IS A STARTER ON A TEAM. BEING THE THIRD RECEIVER, YOU’RE JUST ABOUT A STARTER. HE HAD 43 RECEPTIONS AND SIX TOUCHDOWNS IN THAT POSITION LAST YEAR, AND THIS YEAR HE’S LIGHTING UP THIS TEAM, COMING OFF THE BENCH, DOING THE JOB.>>A GOOD TEAM WINS WHEN IT HAS TO WIN, AND THEY WIN IN THE ORANGE BOWL. THE DOLPHINS ARE 15-3 IN “MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL” GAMES AT THE ORANGE BOWL. INTERESTING TO NOTE — WE MENTIONED IT EARLIER — THE BEARS ARE 5-11 ON “MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL,” BUT THEY’RE 0-8 ON THE ROAD WITH “MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL.” THEY DID WIN EARLIER THIS YEAR, AND THEY WERE DOWN CONSIDERABLY AT ONE POINT TO THE MINNESOTA VIKINGS. THEY WERE DOWN 17-9. THEY BROUGHT McMAHON OFF THE BENCH IN THE THIRD QUARTER. HE THREW THREE TOUCHDOWN PASSES, AND THEY WON GOING AWAY. WILL THEY DO IT AGAIN? WE’LL HAVE TO SEE. THERE HE IS. HEALTHY AND READY. PRACTICED THIS WEEK. HAS MISSED THE LAST THREE GAMES WITH A SORE RIGHT SHOULDER. BUT HE CAN ELECTRIFY THIS BEAR TEAM. HE IS THEIR LEADER PHYSICALLY AND SPIRITUALLY. REVEIZ PUTS IT IN THE AIR. AND GAULT TAKES IT ON THE GROUND. TO THE 27-YARD LINE. NOW, THE BEARS HAVE THREE TIME-OUTS. THEY ARE DOWN BY THE MOST POINTS THAT THEY HAVE BEEN DOWN AT ANY TIME THIS SEASON, TRAILING AT THIS POINT BY 21. FULLER REMAINS THE QUARTERBACK. HE STARTED THE LAST THREE GAMES. MIAMI OVER THE CHICAGO BEARS, 31-10. 1:11 REMAINING IN THE FIRST HALF. TREMENDOUS DEFENSIVE EFFORT HAS BEEN PUT UP BY THIS MIAMI DOLPHIN DEFENSE. RANKED 26th IN THE NFL COMING INTO THE NIGHT. FULLER HAS NOT THROWN A TOUCHDOWN PASS THIS SEASON. HERE’S WALTER PAYTON. BALL IS LOOSE. AND THE BEARS GET IT. KEITH VAN HORNE, THE RIGHT TACKLE, COVERING. TICKING DOWN TO HALFTIME. AND NOW THEY’LL STOP IT. LOST SOME VALUABLE SECONDS FOR THE BEARS, IF THEY ARE THINKING POINTS. AND THE BEARS WILL USE A TIME-OUT. MIKE DITKA FEELING FRUSTRATED, I’M SURE, ON THE SIDELINE. NOTHING REALLY HAS WORKED FOR THEM TONIGHT AGAINST THIS MIAMI DEFENSE. I’M NOT SURE THAT ANY TEAM HAS BEEN SO DOMINANT ON A HOME FIELD AS THE DOLPHINS HAVE OVER THE YEARS. AND MUCH OF IT, OF COURSE, THIS MAN, WITH HIS REMARKABLE RECORD. AND IN 22 YEARS OF COACHING, SIX SUPER BOWL APPEARANCES AS A HEAD COACH. THROW IN A COUPLE THERE FROM BALTIMORE. BUT I THINK THE MOST AMAZING STAT IS HE’S HAD ONE LOSING SEASON.>>HE’S EXTRA TOUGH WHEN HE’S AN UNDERDOG HERE AT THE ORANGE BOWL. I THINK HE’S ONLY BEEN IN THAT POSITION EIGHT TIMES, AND THEY’VE WON ALL EIGHT GAMES — UNDERDOGS AT THE ORANGE BOWL.>>THE BEARS HAVE TWO TIME-OUTS. NO, THEY ARE DOWN — YES, THEY DO HAVE TWO TIME-OUTS. AND THEY HAVE A SECOND AND 8. THE BALL IS AT THEIR OWN 29-YARD LINE. BOTH OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS COME. FULLER CAN RUN FOR THE FIRST. WHICH HE DOES. STOPPING THE CLOCK WITH 41 SECONDS REMAINING IN THE HALF. JAY BROPHY PURSUING FULLER, TAKING HIM OUT OF BOUNDS.>>IT’S BEEN A HORRIBLE FIRST HALF FOR CHICAGO, AND YOU MIGHT WONDER WHY THEY CALLED TIME-OUT. MOST TEAMS WILL JUST WANT TO GET INTO THE LOCKER ROOM AND REGROUP, BUT I GO BACK TO WHAT YOU SAID, JOE, EARLIER. THEY MAY HAVE TO COUNT ON FULLER LATE IN A GAME SOMETIME THIS SEASON. THEY MAY NEED HIM TO SHOW WHAT HE CAN DO IN A SITUATION WITH 50 SECONDS LEFT. CAN HE MOVE A TEAM? EVIDENTLY THAT’S WHAT THEY’RE TRYING TO DO HERE.>>THAT’S RIGHT. WITH GUYS LIKE WALTER PAYTON, WILLIE GAULT, AND DENNIS McKINNON, THEY COULD BREAK A BIG GAINER WITH A SHORT CATCH OR EVEN A HAND-OFF TO WALTER. IT WOULD ALLOW THEM TO GET 30 OR 40 YARDS AND GET IN POSITION FOR A FIELD GOAL. THEY’RE DEFINITELY TRYING TO GET SOME POINTS HERE.>>FIRST AND 10, BEARS. FULLER THROWS UNDERNEATH. AND OUT OF THE BACKFIELD, MATT SUHEY CANNOT HANDLE IT. 35 SECONDS REMAINING. BEARS STILL WITH TWO TIME-OUTS. FULLER — 6 OF 13, 111 YARDS, ONE INTERCEPTION. GEORGE LITTLE COMES IN, NOSE TACKLE NOW FOR THE DOLPHINS. MIKE CHARLES GETTING A BIT OF A BREATHER. THERE HAS BEEN SOME HEAVY HITTING GOING ON IN THE INTERIOR PART OF THAT LINE. COMPLETE OVER THE MIDDLE TO MOOREHEAD ON SECOND AND 10, AND MOOREHEAD WILL GET 5. IT’LL BE THIRD DOWN AND 5. AND THEY MARK IT INSIDE THE 43, SO IT’LL BE THIRD DOWN AND 6. CHICAGO USES YET ANOTHER TIME-OUT. THEY ARE DOWN TO ONE. BUT FULLER WILL MOVE OVER AND TALK WITH MIKE DITKA. THE DOLPHINS WOULD LIKE TO SHUT OFF THE BEARS’ UNDEFEATED STRING RIGHT HERE TONIGHT. THAT’S EDDIE HUGHES, THE OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR, WITH THE SUN VISOR ON — FORMER TEAMMATE OF MINE — TALKING WITH MIKE DITKA. THIRD DOWN AND 6 NOW FOR THE BEARS AT THEIR OWN 43-YARD LINE. THEY HAVE ONE TIME-OUT. WALTER PAYTON.>>THE DOLPHINS OUGHT TO CALL TIME-OUT NOW AND MAKE THEM TRY AND PUNT AGAIN.>>YEAH.>>I’M SURPRISED THEY’RE NOT CALLING TIME-OUT. WHY WOULDN’T THE DOLPHINS CALL TIME-OUT? THEY JUST BLOCKED A PUNT.>>I WAS GOING TO SAY YOU JUST BLOCKED A PUNT. YOU’VE GOT ONE TIME-OUT. AND THE BEARS WILL NOT GET A PLAY OFF. I THINK THEY WERE COMING UP TO THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE SO THE DOLPHINS WOULDN’T USE THAT TIME-OUT. DON SHULA HAS WEAVED HIS SPECIAL MAGIC, AT LEAST IN THE FIRST HALF, TONIGHT. THEY LEAD CHICAGO, THE UNDEFEATED BEARS, 31-10. THAT’S THE SCORE AS WE BEGIN THE SECOND HALF. IF YOU HAVE JUST JOINED US, IT IS, INDEED, TRUE. THE DOLPHINS LEADING THE CHICAGO BEARS, THE UNDEFEATED CHICAGO BEARS, 31-10. SET TO KICK OFF, IT’LL BE KEVIN BUTLER WITH LORENZO HAMPTON DEEP. THAT ONE AT THE 3-YARD LINE. AND HAMPTON WILL BRING IT OUT. GOOD RETURN BY HAMPTON. IT SO OFTEN HAPPENS WHEN THERE’S A BOBBLED KICKOFF. IT THROWS THE TIMING OF THE RETURN SPECIAL-UNITS TEAM COMING DOWN. IT THROWS IT OFF. HAMPTON BRINGS IT ALL THE WAY OUT TO THE 35-YARD LINE. THAT’S HARD TO BELIEVE. THAT GOES ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE FIRST SEASON GAME OF 1972.>>IT’S ALSO MORE POINTS IN ONE HALF THAN THE BEARS HAVE GIVEN UP IN THE LAST SIX GAMES.>>DWIGHT STEPHENSON STAYS IN AT CENTER FOR MIAMI.>>THAT’S TOTAL.>>THEY HAVE HAD GREAT FIELD POSITION ON THEIR DRIVES ALL NIGHT. MARINO. PICKED OFF. LESLIE FRAZIER. THINGS WORK WELL FOR THE BEARS’ DEFENSE HERE ON THE OPENING OFFENSIVE PLAY FOR THE DOLPHINS. FRAZIER WITH THE INTERCEPTION. IT WAS DOUBLE COVERAGE — OR A ZONE DEFENSE — AGAINST DUPER. FRAZIER, THE UNDERNEATH MAN, STEPPED RIGHT IN AND TOOK IT AWAY FROM DUPER. MARINO HAD A LOT OF TIME. AND AS WE CAN SEE, THE BEARS WILL STAY WITH QUARTERBACK STEVE FULLER.>>THEY TRIED TO RUN AN OUT-AND-UP PATTERN WITH DUPER, AND AS FRANK POINTED OUT, LESLIE FRAZIER WAS IN A ZONE COVERAGE, AND HE COULDN’T HAVE CARED ONE BIT ABOUT THAT OUT PATTERN. HE JUST LAID BACK THERE DEEP AND READ IT ALL THE WAY.>>FIRST DOWN. 44-YARD LINE. THE BEARS. THEY COULD BECOME A DIFFERENT FOOTBALL TEAM IF THEY COULD PUT A QUICK 7 ON THE BOARD. THIS IS THEIR BEST STARTING FIELD POSITION OF THE NIGHT. WELL, THAT HAD TO BE SOME KIND OF A SCREEN, AND FULLER ACTUALLY THREW THAT BALL TO HIS PULLING GUARD, MARK BORTZ, WHO IS 62. THE SCREEN MAN, I THINK, WAS NUMBER 26, MATT SUHEY.>>THAT’S FRAZIER, THE MAN WHO INTERCEPTED THE BALL. YOU KNOW, JOE, I WOULD’VE BET MY CAR THAT THE BEARS WOULD’VE COME OUT AND SAID, “HEY, WE NEED TO GET ON THE SCOREBOARD, AND WE’RE GONNA PUT THE BALL ON THE GROUND AND DO WHAT WE DO BEST AND GET IN THERE AND GET ONE SCORE THIS HALF.”>>WHICH CAR? [ LAUGHTER ]>>THE CHEAPEST ONE HE HAS!>>HE DOESN’T HAVE ANY CHEAP ONES. SECOND AND 10. THAT’S PAYTON IN MOTION. FULLER. PAYTON. FIRST DOWN. INSIDE THE 35. DOWN AROUND THE 31-YARD LINE. STRANGE LITTLE PLAY BUT EFFECTIVE. 12-YARD PICKUP.>>O.J., I DO AGREE WITH YOU. RIGHT NOW AT THIS POINT, LET’S GET BACK TO THE GROUND GAME — THE THING THE MIAMI DOLPHINS HAVEN’T STOPPED ALL YEAR LONG — AND YOU HAVE WALTER PAYTON. MATT SUHEY HAVING THE BEST YEAR HE’S HAD IN HIS CAREER. GO WITH THE GROUND GAME NOW. TRY AND GET IT IN THE END ZONE.>>IT WOULD BE DIFFERENT IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE THE BEST RUNNING GAME IN FOOTBALL.>>IF YOU SECOND-GUESS, YOU’D HAVE TO SAY THAT THEY SHOULD’VE STARTED THAT MUCH EARLIER. WALTER PAYTON DID NOT CARRY THE BALL TILL MIDWAY IN THE FIRST QUARTER AGAINST A TEAM THAT’S 23rd IN THE NFL AGAINST THE RUSH, WHILE THE BEARS ARE NUMBER ONE WITH PAYTON AND SUHEY RUSHING THE FOOTBALL. FIRST AND 10, THE BEARS. 32-YARD LINE OF THE DOLPHINS. PAYTON. THAT’S WHAT PAYTON DOES, EVEN WHEN HE’S HIT AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. HE’S TO THE 25. AND A MAN IS SLOW GETTING UP. IT’S A DOLPHIN. THE MEDICAL STAFF COMES OUT. MARK BROWN, THE INSIDE LINEBACKER, IS THE INJURED DOLPHIN. THAT WAS A GREAT EFFORT BY PAYTON. HE GOT 7 YARDS OUT OF NOTHING. IT’LL BE SECOND AND 3. 51 YEARS AGO TONIGHT — OR RATHER TODAY — THE CHICAGO BEARS DEFEATED THE DETROIT LIONS TO GO 13-0. THAT WAS THEIR BEST RECORD PRIOR TO THIS SEASON. THE BEARS ARE TRYING TO MATCH THAT TONIGHT AND THEN EXTEND IT. BEARS, BY THE WAY, WENT ON TO LOSE TO THE GIANTS IN THE SNEAKERS GAME, 30-13, FOR THE NFL TITLE. RIGHT NOW, THE BEARS HAVE A SECOND DOWN AND 3. THE BALL AT THE 25-YARD LINE OF THE DOLPHINS. MATT SUHEY LOSES 2 AFTER WALTER PAYTON HAD JUST GAINED 7. KIM BOKAMPER. VERY SORE SHOULDER FROM LAST WEEK. HAD TROUBLE EARLIER IN THE YEAR WITH A PINCHED NERVE IN HIS NECK. THIS DOLPHINS TEAM IS A PRETTY BANGED-UP FOOTBALL TEAM, PARTICULARLY THEIR OFFENSIVE LINE. THIRD DOWN AND 4 NOW. JACKIE SHIPP REPLACED MARK BROWN, WHO WALKED OFF THE FIELD WHILE WE WERE IN COMMERCIAL. DID NOT APPEAR TO BE SERIOUSLY INJURED, BUT JACKIE SHIPP IS IN THERE NOW AT INSIDE LINEBACKER WITH JAY BROPHY. THIRD AND 4 FOR THE BEARS. McMAHON TRYING TO GO TO WALTER PAYTON. YES! THE INTERCEPTION BY GLENN BLACKWOOD IS INBOUNDS. WALTER PAYTON DID NOT EVEN APPEAR AS IF HE WAS A PRIME — CERTAINLY A PRIME RECEIVER. HE WASN’T EVEN INTERESTED. SECOND INTERCEPTION BY THE DOLPHINS. McKINNON WENT DOWN AND IN. FULLER LOBBED IT UP TO PAYTON, WHO WAS COVERED ON THE INSIDE AND ON THE OUTSIDE. PAYTON WASN’T TERRIBLY INTERESTED IN THIS SORT OF THING. DIDN’T ACT LIKE HE EVEN KNEW IT WAS COMING. HE WAS LOOKING INSIDE TO McKINNON. GLENN BLACKWOOD PICKS IT OFF.>>WALTER DEFINITELY DID NOT SEE THAT BALL, OR HE WOULD’VE GONE UP, MADE AN ATTEMPT AT IT, OR AT LEAST PREVENTED THE INTERCEPTION.>>FIRST AND 10, MIAMI. THEY’RE AT THEIR OWN 10-YARD LINE. CHICAGO’S THIRD TURNOVER. NATHAN NAILED AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. DAN HAMPTON THERE DEFENSIVELY. THE BEARS’ OTHER UNDEFEATED TEAM IN NFL HISTORY WAS BACK IN 1942, WHEN EVEN SID LUCKMAN AND HIS TROOPS COULDN’T PULL IT OFF, A CHAMPIONSHIP GAME, AS THEY LOST TO WASHINGTON. LITTLE BIT OF REVENGE FOR THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS, WHO, TWO YEARS PRIOR TO THAT, HAD BEEN BEATEN BY THE BEARS, 73-0. SECOND DOWN AND 10. COMPLETE? NO. CLAYTON OUT OF BOUNDS. I’M BEGINNING TO THINK IT’S ALMOST BY DESIGN THAT MARINO IS ROLLING OUT. YOU PICKED UP ON IT EARLY, JOE, THAT IT WAS A DESIGNED PLAY — THE DEEP PASS. HE HIT CLAYTON EARLIER. IT’S ONE WAY TO GET RID OF THAT PRESSURE. IT’S ALMOST A SPRINT-OUT.>>THAT’S EXACTLY RIGHT. THE BEARS DEFENSE PUTS SO MUCH PRESSURE ON THE QUARTERBACK WHILE HE’S IN THE POCKET. OBVIOUSLY COACH SHULA AND MARINO FELT THAT THEY HAD TO GET OUT OF THAT POCKET OCCASIONALLY TONIGHT. WE PICKED IT UP IN THE FIRST HALF. WHEN THE BEARS ONLY RUSHED THREE DEFENSIVE LINEMEN, DAN DIDN’T HAVE TO LEAVE THE POCKET, BUT IT WAS PREDESIGNED WHEN HE DID. IT’S DEFINITELY PREDESIGNED.>>THIRD DOWN AND 10. NAT MOORE JOINS MARK DUPER AND MARK CLAYTON AS A THIRD WIDE RECEIVER FOR MIAMI. LOW SNAP. MARINO PULLS IT UP. FIRES A STRIKE TO CLAYTON. HE DROPS THE FOOTBALL! RICHARD DENT HAS IT. AND DENT BACK TO THE 15-YARD LINE. CLAYTON CAME DOWN WITH THE RECEPTION. IT WAS A GREAT EFFORT BY MARINO TO GET IT TO HIM. A LOW SNAP. HE FIRED IT RIGHT ON TARGET, BUT CLAYTON BOBBLES IT.>>I WANT YOU TO WATCH MIKE RICHARDSON, THE DEFENSIVE BACK. SURE, HE GETS WHIPPED ON THIS PLAY CROSSING THE MIDDLE, BUT WHEN HE MAKES THE TACKLE, WATCH HOW HE STRIKES THE BALL. HE KNOCKS THE BALL LOOSE. A NICE DEFENSIVE PLAY BY MIKE RICHARDSON.>>AND YOU GOT TO WONDER ABOUT THIS CHICAGO DEFENSE, WHY IT CONFUSES PEOPLE. LOOK AT RICHARD DENT. HE’S A DEFENSIVE END. HE WEIGHS 260-SOMETHING POUNDS. WHAT IS HE DOING THAT FAR DOWNFIELD ON A PASS PLAY? OBVIOUSLY THE RIGHT THING.>>IT’S A HUSTLING, SWARMING DEFENSE. IT’S REALLY THE HEART OF THIS BEAR TEAM. TREMENDOUS PRIDE AMONGST THE MEMBERS OF THIS DEFENSIVE UNIT. AND THEY HAVE A FIRST DOWN. THEY ARE ON MIAMI’S 27-YARD LINE. WALTER PAYTON. AND PAYTON JUST BURSTS DOWN TO THE 15-YARD LINE. A BEAR FIRST DOWN. AND NOW THEY ARE BEGINNING TO USE PAYTON LIKE WE THOUGHT THEY WOULD IN THE FIRST HALF.>>THIS IS WALTER. ALL HE’S DOING IS HIS OFFENSIVE LINE IS NOT ALLOWING ANY PENETRATION. THEY’RE STAYING ON THEIR MAN, AND WALTER IS JUST PICKING HIS WAY. THIS IS SOMETHING HE’S DONE FOR OVER 13,000 YARDS.>>SOME GREAT BLOCKING ON THAT PLAY.>>61 YARDS NOW FOR WALTER PAYTON, WHO’S LOOKING FOR HIS EIGHTH CONSECUTIVE 100-YARD GAME. THAT WOULD SET HIM APART FROM O.J. SIMPSON AND EARL CAMPBELL. THEY ARE TIED AT THE MOMENT WITH SEVEN CONSECUTIVE 100-YARD GAMES WITH PAYTON. FIRST AND 10. PAYTON. TOUGH SLEDDING DOWN TO THE 13-YARD LINE. HE’LL GET A COUPLE OUT OF IT. HE PAID FOR IT. IT’LL BE SECOND DOWN AND 8. THERE’S RICHARD DENT.>>10 SACKS THIS YEAR. 263 POUNDS. AND AT TIMES, THEY ASK HIM TO COVER BACKS OUT OF THE BACKFIELD.>>GOT HIS 11th TONIGHT. HAD A TREMENDOUS YEAR A YEAR AGO. 17 1/2 SACKS. WE MET WITH HIM EARLIER TODAY. QUIET, SHY, UNASSUMING. AND HE CAN TURN INTO SOMETHING DIFFERENT WHEN HE COMES ONTO THE FOOTBALL FIELD IN A BEAR UNIFORM. 10:32 REMAINING IN THE THIRD QUARTER. MIAMI LEADING CHICAGO, 31-10. THE BEARS HAVE A SECOND DOWN AND 8. FULLER HAS IT BATTED AWAY. IT’LL BE THIRD AND 8. DOUG BETTERS WAS RIGHT IN FULLER’S FACE. KIM BOKAMPER WAS PURSUING HIM FROM BEHIND.>>WELL, I STILL DON’T KNOW WHY THEY’RE LEAVING THE RUNNING GAME SO QUICKLY. IT’S EASY TO LOOK BACK AND SAY SECOND AND 8. NOW IT’S THIRD AND 8 BECAUSE THEY THREW THE INCOMPLETE PASS. BUT IT’S SECOND AND 8. IT’S A GOOD RUN SITUATION. THEY’RE GONNA BE PLAYING PASS IN THE FIRST PLACE — PASS, DRAW, OR SCREEN. IF YOU STICK A GOOD RUN AT THEM WITH THE BEST RUNNING ATTACK IN FOOTBALL, YOU EXPECT TO GET SOMETHING.>>MIAMI LATE BRINGING IN THEIR PASS-PREVENT PLAYERS, THEIR SPECIAL UNIT, ON THIS THIRD DOWN AND 8. LIKE A BAD FIRE DRILL OUT THERE ON THE PART OF THE DOLPHINS. AND FULLER GETS IT TO THE TIGHT END. THAT IS TIM WRIGHTMAN, A DRAFT PICK THREE YEARS AGO BY THE BEARS WHO SERVED TWO YEARS IN THE USFL. BUT HE GETS THE BEARS A FIRST DOWN, DOWN INSIDE THE 1-YARD LINE. AND THAT COULD’VE BEEN THE DOLPHINS’ DEFENSE THAT GOT IN THERE SO LATE. THEY HAD NOT SETTLED IN. FULLER CAME WITH A QUICK COUNT, AND HE FOUND WRIGHTMAN RIGHT OVER THE MIDDLE AND WIDE OPEN. BUD BROWN HELD ON, KEPT WRIGHTMAN OUT OF THE END ZONE, UNTIL HIS PALS GOT THERE. BUT WILLIAM PERRY, THE REFRIGERATOR, IS IN. AND IF HE DOES HIS THING, LIKE WE SAW HIM DO AGAINST GREEN BAY, HE’LL BE LEADING WALTER PAYTON. EARLIER TONIGHT, THEY WENT WITH THE QUARTERBACK SNEAK WITH THE FRIDGE IN THERE. THEY TRY IT AGAIN. AND IT WORKS. OVER THE TOP GOES STEVE FULLER. AND THE BEARS TURN A CLAYTON TURNOVER INTO A TOUCHDOWN. AND THAT’S THE WAY THESE BEARS HAVE BEEN WINNING ALL YEAR LONG. THEY HAMMER YOU, THEY BEAT UP ON YOU, THEY TIRE YOU, AND ALL OF A SUDDEN, YOU START TO COUGH UP THE FOOTBALL. AND THEN THEY COME ON SO STRONG. IT’S NOT A GREAT OFFENSIVE TEAM. IT’S A TEAM BUILT AROUND WALTER PAYTON. THAT IN ITSELF, I SUPPOSE, IS GREAT. BUT STEVE FULLER HAS NOT HAD A TOUCHDOWN PASS IN NOW OVER THREE GAMES. THEY JUST BEAT UP ON YOU WITH DEFENSE, EXHAUST YOU, AND THEN THEY POUR IT ON. BUTLER PUTS IT THROUGH. AND THE BEARS DRAW CLOSER TO MIAMI. THESE ARE THE GUYS THAT BLOCK ON THE KICKOFF. WELL, THEY MIGHT BE ALMOST AS TOUGH AS THE GUYS WHO COME DOWN AS WEDGE BUSTERS. BUTLER TO KICK. LORENZO HAMPTON IS DEEP. AND THEY TRY AN ONSIDE KICK! AND IT’S FIELDED, HANDLED THERE QUICKLY. ALEX MOYER. ALEX MOYER, WHO IS SO GOOD ON PASS DEFENSE AS A ROOKIE OUT OF NORTHWESTERN. HE HANDLED THAT, ALMOST SENSED THAT IT WAS COMING. AND THAT HAS BEEN SO SUCCESSFUL THROUGH THE LAST FEW WEEKS OF THE SEASON. WHEN YOU HAVE TRIED IT WITH THE OTHER TEAM NOT SUSPECTING IT, IT HAS BEEN VERY SUCCESSFUL. BUT THIS TIME, IT’S TAKEN BY THE ROOKIE, MOYER. AND THE DOLPHINS HAVE GREAT FIELD POSITION. 46-YARD LINE OF THE BEARS. BUT YOU CAN TRY THAT WHEN YOU HAVE A GREAT DEFENSIVE TEAM.>>AND WHEN YOU KNOW THOSE KICKOFF PEOPLE ARE RUNNING BACKWARDS. THEY WEREN’T THAT TIME. THAT WAS DEFINITELY A BAD CALL.>>WOODY BENNETT. SO, WHAT WORKED SO WELL FOR THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS AGAINST THE GIANTS A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO DOES NOT WORK FOR THE CHICAGO BEARS TONIGHT.>>NORMALLY IF YOU SEE IT SUCCESSFUL ON TV, THAT WEEK, YOUR TEAM WILL PRACTICE IT. EVERYBODY IS ALERT FOR IT.>>YOU HAVE TO WATCH THE FRONT LINE OF THE KICK-RETURN TEAM. IF THEY TURN THEIR BACKS WHEN THE KICKER APPROACHES THE BALL, TRY IT. MIAMI’S TEAM DIDN’T TURN THEIR BACKS.>>BENNETT GOT 4. SECOND DOWN AND 6. THE BALL AT THE 42-YARD LINE OF THE BEARS. MARINO. INCOMPLETE. INTENDED FOR BENNETT. IT’LL BE THIRD DOWN AND 6.>>ONE OF THE CONCERNS THAT THE DOLPHINS COACHING STAFF HAVE HAD THIS YEAR ABOUT THIS TEAM IS THE FACT THAT THEY DON’T SEEM TO BE ABLE TO KEEP A LEAD. THEY GET AHEAD, AND TEAMS CATCH UP. WELL, THUS FAR THIS GAME, THEY SCORED EVERY TIME THEY HAD THE BALL IN THE FIRST HALF. THE SECOND HALF, THEY GET THE BALL TWICE, THEY TURN IT OVER TWICE, AND I THINK THAT’S BECAUSE OF THEIR INABILITY TO RUN THE FOOTBALL. WHEN YOU GET A LEAD, YOU LIKE TO RUN THE BALL AND RUN OFF THE TIME ON THE CLOCK.>>THE OFFENSIVE SET WITH NAT MOORE IN IT THAT WAS SO SUCCESSFUL IN THE FIRST HALF IS ON THE FIELD NOW FOR THIRD DOWN AND 6. DUPER, MOORE, AND CLAYTON. BATTED AWAY. INTO THE ARMS OF CLAYTON!>>[ CHUCKLES ]>>OH, AND ARE THINGS GOING RIGHT FOR THE DOLPHINS TONIGHT. 42-YARD TOUCHDOWN. BATTED INTO THE AIR AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. THIS IS VINTAGE “MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL.” BATTED AWAY AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. UP GOES THE BIG HAND OF DAN HAMPTON. IT WAS OVER MIKE RICHARDSON’S HEAD. HE COULDN’T GET TO IT. RIGHT INTO THE ARMS OF CLAYTON. REVEIZ FOR THE CONVERSION. [ CHEERS AND APPLAUSE ] IT’S FAR FROM OVER, BUT I GUESS YOU COULD CALL IT ORANGE BOWL MAGIC. THE DOLPHINS HAVE ONLY LOST ONE GAME OUT OF THEIR LAST 18 THAT THEY PLAYED HERE. GAULT AND DENNIS GENTRY ARE DEEP FOR THE CHICAGO BEARS. THE ONSIDE KICK BACKFIRING. AND IT WAS PURE LUCK, DAN HAMPTON BATTING THE BALL IN THE AIR AND OVER THE DEFENDER, RICHARDSON, RIGHT INTO THE ARMS OF CLAYTON FOR A 42-YARD MIAMI TOUCHDOWN. REVEIZ. PUTS IT HIGH. AND GENTRY WILL TAKE IT FROM THE 1. GENTRY HAS SOMETHING HAPPENING. FINE RETURN BY GENTRY. INSIDE MIAMI TERRITORY AT THE 49-YARD LINE. REALLY FINE RUNNING BY GENTRY. YOU DON’T SEE THAT MUCH OF HIM. WE SAW A 16-YARD TOUCHDOWN RUN BY GENTRY AGAINST DALLAS. BUT WITH WALTER PAYTON RUNNING THE FOOTBALL, YOU DON’T THINK MUCH ABOUT THE OTHER BACKS.>>WELL, WHAT HAPPENED THERE WAS THE LEFT SIDE OF THE KICKOFF COVERAGE BY THE DOLPHINS SORT OF FOLDED IN BECAUSE THE BALL WAS KICKED TO THEIR RIGHT, AND NORMALLY A TEAM WILL COME UP THAT SIDE OF THE FIELD, AND GENTRY WAS ABLE TO GET THE BALL ON THIS END OF THE FIELD AND OUTRUN MOST OF THE PURSUIT.>>FIRST DOWN, BEARS. 49-YARD LINE OF MIAMI. THE BEARS NEED A BIG PLAY. THEY NEED A WILLIE GAULT. THEY NEED TO HIT FROM WAY OUT. THEY HAVE TO GET SOMETHING HAPPENING. WALTER PAYTON. FLAG IS THROWN LATE. PAYTON GOT A COUPLE OF YARDS, WAS HIT LATE OUT OF BOUNDS. REFEREE, AGAIN, TONIGHT IS GORDON McCARTER. RELATIVELY CLEAN FOOTBALL GAME. NOT THAT MANY PENALTIES. BUT THEN THERE SELDOM ARE MANY PENALTIES AGAINST THE DOLPHINS.>>WELL, THERE REALLY WASN’T MUCH OVER HERE. SIMPLE SWEEP. BRUDZINSKI AND THE GUYS WERE ABLE TO JUST HOLD UP THE BLOCKERS AND DIDN’T GIVE ANY ROOM. A LITTLE SHOVE ONCE WALTER WAS OUT OF BOUNDS.>>YOU KNOW, THERE’S STILL A HECK OF A LOT OF TIME LEFT IN THIS GAME, AND THE WAY THE BEARS ARE ABLE TO MAKE THESE TEAMS TURN THE FOOTBALL OVER, I THINK THEY SHOULD JUST STICK WITH WALTER ON THE GROUND AND DRIVE THIS THING DOWN HERE. THEY NEED THREE SCORES. MIAMI IS NOT GONNA RUN THE CLOCK OUT WITH THEIR RUNNING GAME ‘CAUSE THEY REALLY DON’T HAVE A GOOD ONE.>>A PERSONAL FOUL CALLED AGAINST BOB BRUDZINSKI. PAYTON, NOW, 66 YARDS, 14 CARRIES. THE FIRST DOWN IS AT THE 30-YARD LINE OF MIAMI. PAYTON. WORKS FOR ABOUT 6 YARDS. INSIDE THE 25-YARD LINE. NO FLAG, BUT THERE APPEARED TO BE EARLY MOVEMENT ON THE PART OF THE BEARS’ OFFENSIVE LINE. SAID WHEN HE BROKE JIM BROWN’S RECORD HE’D LOOK FORWARD TO 15,000. HE’S NOT THAT FAR OFF.>>AND THE WAY HE’S GOING, HE CAN ADD ANOTHER 4,000 OR 5,000 TO THAT.>>MARCUS ALLEN, OF COURSE, THE LEADER IN THE NFL THROUGH 13 GAMES WITH OVER 1,300 YARDS. RIGHT BEHIND HIM IS GERALD RIGGS OF ATLANTA. PAYTON IS THIRD. SECOND DOWN AND 4. MATT SUHEY. HE’S CLOSE TO A BEAR FIRST DOWN NEAR THE 20-YARD LINE. MIDWAY, NOW, THROUGH THE THIRD QUARTER. HUGH GREEN, DOUG BETTERS. THEY WERE IN ON THE STOP FOR THE DOLPHINS. MIGHT HAVE TO SEE A MEASUREMENT HERE. MATT SUHEY. GOOD, HARD RUNNING. HE HAS HAD TO SUBORDINATE A LOT OF HIS TALENT, AND HE HAS DONE IT VERY WILLINGLY FOR WALTER PAYTON. HE’S A GOOD BLOCKER, TOUGH OUT OF THE BACKFIELD AS A RECEIVER. BUT HE IS THAT MUCH SHORT OF A FIRST DOWN. OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR ON THE LEFT, EDDIE HUGHES, AND MIKE DITKA SENDS THE PLAY IN WITH STEVE FULLER. STEVE FULLER HAD SOME BIG YEARS WITH KANSAS CITY IN ’79, ’80, AND ’81. TRADED TO THE RAMS IN ’83. THEY DIDN’T USE HIM AT ALL. TRADED TO THE BEARS A YEAR AGO. SEPARATED HIS SHOULDER IN TRAINING CAMP. DIDN’T SEE ACTION TILL LATE IN THE SEASON, BUT HE TOOK THE BEARS THROUGH THEIR LAST FOUR GAMES AND INTO THE PLAYOFFS. HE’S THE QUARTERBACK GOING ALL THE WAY FOR THE BEARS TONIGHT. THIRD DOWN AND INCHES. FULLER AGAIN WITH THE QUARTERBACK SNEAK, WHICH HAS BEEN A MAJOR PART OF THEIR OFFENSE TONIGHT.>>I’LL TELL YOU, THAT’S THE FOURTH QUARTERBACK SNEAK THE BEARS HAVE RAN TONIGHT — OR RUN TONIGHT — AND, YOU KNOW, THE REASON BEING MIAMI IS IN A SHORT-YARDAGE DEFENSE. THEY HAVE A LINEBACKER ASSIGNED TO WALTER PAYTON. YOU SEE THE MIDDLE IS WIDE OPEN. THEY DON’T HAVE ANYONE ASSIGNED TO THE QUARTERBACK HERE, AND HE JUST FINDS THE GAP. VERY OFTEN, A QUARTERBACK WILL AUDIBLIZE AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE IF HE SEES THAT THERE ISN’T A LINEBACKER OVER HIS HEAD, AND HE’LL PICK A GAP, TELL HIS OFFENSIVE LINE TO JUST SNEAK IT.>>AND MIKE CHARLES, THE NOSE TACKLE, IS RELATIVELY YOUNG AT THAT POSITION DEFENSIVELY FOR MIAMI. FIRST AND 10. FULLER, A LOT OF TIME. THAT’S MARGERUM, KEN MARGERUM, THE FORMER STANFORD ALL-AMERICAN. HIS 12th RECEPTION OF THE SEASON. MISSED ALL OF LAST YEAR WITH KNEE SURGERY, BUT HE WAS SOMETHING AT STANFORD. BROKE THE RECORDS OF TONY HILL, JAMES LOFTON, GENE WASHINGTON. LET’S LOOK AT IT AGAIN. HE BRINGS THE BEARS BACK INTO IT.>>MARGERUM ACTUALLY HAD DOUBLE COVERAGE ON HIM OVER THERE. HE BROKE UNDERNEATH BLACKWOOD RIGHT HERE, AND I’M SURE BLACKWOOD IS KICKING HIMSELF IN THE, WELL, YOU-KNOW-WHERE RIGHT NOW. HE SHOULD’VE BEEN ON THAT COVERAGE.>>MARGERUM WITH A GOOD MOVE ON GLENN BLACKWOOD, AND FULLER GETS HIS FIRST TOUCHDOWN PASS IN FOUR GAMES. BUTLER FOR THE CONVERSION. AND THE CHICAGO BEARS. THEY’RE NOT GONNA QUIT AT ALL.>>LONG WAY FROM OVER.>>FULLER TO MARGERUM. THE BEARS DRAW CLOSER. THERE’S KEN MARGERUM, HIS FOURTH YEAR OUT OF STANFORD. QUESTION ABOUT WHETHER HE WOULD EVER COME BACK FOR THIS GAME. HE HAD SERIOUS KNEE SURGERY. MISSED ALL OF LAST YEAR. HAS WORKED HIMSELF BACK INTO SHAPE. THAT WAS HIS 12th RECEPTION OF THIS SEASON. PLAYS KIND OF A MINOR ROLE IN THE BEARS’ PASSING ATTACK. THAT WAS A MAJOR ROLE. AND IT PROVED SOMETHING TO THESE CHICAGO BEARS — THAT THEY CAN GET INTO THE END ZONE.>>MY LAST YEAR WITH THE 49ers, BILL WALSH FELT THAT MARGERUM, WHEN HE WAS STILL AT STANFORD, WAS THE MOST POLISHED COLLEGE RECEIVER HE HAD EVER SEEN.>>I DO NOT BELIEVE WE’LL SEE AN ONSIDE KICK. THE BEARS ARE STRONGLY BACK IN THIS FOOTBALL GAME. BUTLER PUTS IT UP. HAMPTON HAS TO FORGET ABOUT IT. GOOD KICK BY BUTLER. DAN MARINO HAS BEEN HIT A LOT TONIGHT. ONLY SACKED ONCE, HOWEVER. HE’S HELD THE BALL LATE ON MANY OCCASIONS. FIRST AND 10 AT THE DOLPHIN 20-YARD LINE. MARINO TRYING TO GET IT INTO THE GAP TO MARK CLAYTON, BUT HE HAD TO HURRY THE PASS. IT’LL BE SECOND DOWN AND 10. 6:14 REMAINING HERE IN THE THIRD QUARTER. NATURALLY, A SELLOUT CROWD. JOE ROBBIE, THE OWNER OF THE DOLPHINS, SAID HE HAS NEVER SEEN THIS KIND OF HYSTERIA BUILDING UP TO A GAME IN THE 20-YEAR HISTORY OF THE FRANCHISE, AND I AGREE. I’VE BEEN IN FLORIDA THE PAST FEW DAYS. YOU COULDN’T READ OR HEAR ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE. SECOND DOWN AND 10. AND DOWN GOES NATHAN. LINE OF SCRIMMAGE AND THAT’S IT. IT’LL PUT MARINO IN A THIRD AND LONG, THIRD AND 10. AND THE BEARS CAN BE REALLY HARMFUL IN THIS SITUATION. AND THE DOLPHINS, ONE THING THEY MUST NOT DO IS START TO PLAY IT COZY THIS EARLY IN THE GAME. THEY LEAD BY 14. BUT THE BEARS FIGURE TO PUT MORE POINTS ON THAT SCOREBOARD. THEY HAVE UNRAVELED THE MYSTERY OF THE DOLPHIN DEFENSE THAT HAD THEM A LITTLE BIT DIZZY IN THE FIRST HALF. NOW THE DEFENSE HAS TO GET THE FOOTBALL BACK FOR THE OFFENSE. MARINO OVERTHROWS. INTENDED FOR DUPER, WHO IS LOOKING FOR A FLAG. AND THE PUNTING UNIT WILL COME ON. IT’LL BE THE FIRST PUNT OF THE NIGHT FOR THE DOLPHINS. IF YOU’RE GOING TO PUNT, YOU MAY AS WELL TROT OUT REGGIE ROBY. YOU CAN CLOCK HIS HANG TIME WITH AN HOURGLASS.>>[ CHUCKLES ]>>OH, HE GETS IT UP THERE. KEITH ORTEGO IS BACK. THE ROOKIE FREE AGENT FROM McNEESE STATE. BEARS WILL BE GOING FOR THIS. OOH! ROBY PUT ON THE ACT, BUT HE DID NOT GET THE FLAG. AND IT’S NOT A GOOD PUNT. AND IT ALSO TOOK A BEAR BOUNCE. ROBY GOT BUMPED A LITTLE BIT. HE GAVE YOU A STANISLAVSKY ACT, BUT IT DID NOT DRAW THE FLAG.>>TECHNICALLY, IF HE IS PUTTING ON AN ACT, THAT OFFICIAL SHOULD CALL A PENALTY. [ LIGHT LAUGHTER ]>>BEARS EVEN HELPING OUT. IT WAS CLIFF THRIFT, FORMER SAN DIEGO CHARGER MIDDLE LINEBACKER. HE WASN’T GONNA EVEN LET ROBY FALL.>>IT’S IN THE RULE BOOK. THAT OFFICIAL CAN CALL A PENALTY ON THE PUNTER IF HE DOES PUT ON AN ACT. IT’S CALLED BAD ACTING.>>GOOD FIELD POSITION AGAIN FOR THE BEARS. 47-YARD LINE. 5:16 REMAINING IN THE THIRD QUARTER. THE BEARS DOWN BY TWO TOUCHDOWNS. PAYTON. MANHANDLED BY MARK BROWN. SPINS FOR A YARD.>>WELL, THEY DIDN’T GET MUCH OUT OF IT, BUT I JUST WON MY CAR BACK.>>[ LAUGHS ]>>I THINK THEY SEE A LOT OF WALTER RIGHT NOW.>>NICOLE WOULD NEVER LET YOU GET RID OF THAT CAR. SHE LOOKS SO PRETTY IN IT. SECOND DOWN AND 9. A CHANT OF “DEFENSE!” BY 75,000. OR MAKE IT 73,000. THERE WERE 3,000 BEAR FANS WHO ARRIVED HERE. MIX-UP IN THE BACKFIELD, I THINK. EITHER THAT OR IT WAS A DESIGNED PLAY TO LULL THE DEFENSE INTO THINKING THAT IT WAS A RUNNING PLAY.>>AND IT WORKED, BUT THERE WASN’T A RECEIVER OPEN.>>AND HUGH GREEN WAS OPEN. HE GOT TO FULLER AND DROPS HIM BACK AT THE 44-YARD LINE. AND THE TRICKERY IS NOT PAYING MAJOR DIVIDENDS FOR THE BEARS. THEY MIGHT BE BETTER OFF PLAYING JUST THE SOLID FOOTBALL, AND WITH THE BEARS, THAT MEANS GIVE WALTER PAYTON THE FOOTBALL A LOT OF TIMES. THIRD DOWN, 14. [ CROWD CHEERING LOUDLY ] CROWD IS DEAFENING, AND FULLER SAYS, “JAY HILGENBERG, MY CENTER, CAN’T HEAR THE SNAP COUNT.” WELL, THIS HAPPENED IN THE FIRST QUARTER, IF YOU WERE WITH US. THE PARTISAN CROWD NOISY TO THE POINT OF THE BEARS COULD NOT HEAR THEIR OFFENSIVE SIGNALS. THERE HAVE ONLY BEEN THREE UNDEFEATED TEAMS IN THE HISTORY OF THIS GAME. BEARS DID IT IN ’34. THEY DID IT IN ’42. THE DOLPHINS DID IT IN ’72, BUT THE DOLPHINS WERE THE ONLY ONES TO GO ALL THE WAY THROUGH TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP, AS THE NOISE CONTINUES. I MENTIONED ON THE 16th, WE’LL BE BACK HERE FOR MIAMI AND NEW ENGLAND. BUSY WEEKEND NEXT WEEKEND AND A VERY INTERESTING ONE. THE STEELERS, ONE GAME BEHIND THE CLEVELAND BROWNS IN THE AFC CENTRAL DIVISION, WILL BE IN SAN DIEGO TO GO AGAINST THE CHARGERS, WHO ARE STILL ALIVE FOR A PLAYOFF. DAN FOUTS AND THE NUMBER-ONE OFFENSIVE UNIT. THAT GAME WILL BE SUNDAY NIGHT, AND WE’LL BRING THAT TO YOU AT 9:00 EASTERN. AND THEN THE FOLLOWING NIGHT, WE’LL BE IN SAN FRANCISCO. THE RAMS AND THE 49ers. THE 49ers TRAIL THE RAMS BY ONE. BUT IF THEY CAN WIN AT HOME AND WIN THEIR REMAINING TWO GAMES, THEY WILL BE THE WESTERN DIVISION CHAMPIONS OF THE NFC BECAUSE THEY’VE ALREADY BEATEN THE RAMS ONCE BEFORE, AND THE FIRST TIE BREAKER IS HEAD-TO-HEAD COMPETITION. THIRD DOWN AND 13, IN CASE YOU FORGOT. THEY’RE GOING TO ASK DON SHULA, ON THE SIDELINE, IF HE CAN HELP. AGAIN, AS I MENTIONED EARLIER IN THE GAME, THE FIRST QUARTER, WHEN THIS HAPPENED, THERE’S NOTHING THE OFFICIALS CAN DO. AND I THINK DON SHULA CAN QUIET ANY CROWD.>>HERE, AGAIN, THE QUARTERBACK JUST HAS TO BE PATIENT. YOU DON’T WANT TO WASTE A PLAY. YOU CAN’T ALLOW THE CROWD TO BULLY YOU INTO GOING AHEAD AND CALLING SIGNALS WHEN YOUR TEAM CAN’T HEAR IT. IT COULD COST YOU THE FOOTBALL GAME. YET THERE WAS A TIME I HAD TO WAIT WHEN I WAS WITH THE NEW YORK JETS FOR ALMOST 7 MINUTES, AND IT HAPPENED TO BE AGAINST THE CHICAGO BEARS AT SOLDIER FIELD IN CHICAGO.>>YOU KNOW, THIS IS WILD. THE DOLPHIN PLAYERS WERE WAVING THEIR ARMS. NOW THIS ENTIRE STADIUM IS UP, IMITATING THE DOLPHIN PLAYERS WHO WERE TRYING TO QUIET THEM. BIZARRE. YES, FULLER IS UNDER THE CENTER. GONNA TAKE THE SNAP FROM THE CENTER — MAYBE. NO. BOY, THERE ARE GONNA BE A LOT OF POLYPS DEVELOPED BY THIS CROWD TONIGHT.>>I THINK EVENTUALLY WE’RE GONNA HAVE TO MAKE SOME KIND OF A RULE CHANGE TO TRY TO PROHIBIT THIS KIND OF BEHAVIOR. OF COURSE, THE FANS ARE ENTITLED TO SHOW THEIR EXCITEMENT.>>WELL, DON SHULA IS ON THE COMPETITION COMMITTEE OF THE NFL.>>I’LL TELL YOU WHAT. IT’D BE PRETTY DIFFICULT TO PENALIZE THE CROWD, ‘CAUSE THERE ARE TEAMS IN THIS LEAGUE — I KNOW SOME TEAMS THAT I PLAYED IN IN BUFFALO — THE FANS WOULD’VE PENALIZED US THE WHOLE SECOND HALF OF THE GAME. THEY’D HAVE JUST MADE NOISE. [ LAUGHTER ]>>THEY FIGURED THEY HAD A BETTER CHANCE OF WINNING!>>BELIEVE ME. WE DESERVED TO BE PENALIZED SOME OF OUR YEARS, EARLIER YEARS, IN BUFFALO.>>WE HAD SOME OF THOSE WITH THE JETS, TOO.>>I’LL REPEAT WHAT I SAID EARLIER. JOE ROBBIE SAID TONIGHT, IN THE 20-YEAR HISTORY OF THIS FRANCHISE, HE HAD NEVER SEEN THE CITY IN SUCH A TURMOIL OVER A FOOTBALL GAME, AND THERE HAVE BEEN A LOT OF GREAT YEARS DOWN HERE. NOW THEY’VE QUIETED SOMEWHAT. THIRD DOWN AND 13. 4:03 REMAINING HERE IN THE THIRD QUARTER. DOWN GOES FULLER. [ CROWD CHEERING LOUDLY ] MACK MOORE. THEY HAVE HIM LISTED AS A ROOKIE, BUT HE HAD A COUPLE OF GREAT YEARS IN THE CFL WITH BRITISH COLUMBIA. HE LED THEM IN SACKS TWO YEARS AGO AND LAST YEAR WAS SECOND. MAURY BUFORD IS ON TO PUNT. TOMMY VIGORITO IS BACK AT THE 15-YARD LINE. THERE’S BUFORD. HE’S HAD ONE BLOCKED TONIGHT. TOWERING KICK BY BUFORD AND A GOOD ONE. TAKES VIGORITO INTO THE CORNER. FLAGS ARE DOWN ALL OVER AS VIGORITO WORKS OUT TO THE 13-YARD LINE. 51-YARD PUNT. AND A BEAUTIFUL PUNT BY BUFORD. PUT VIGORITO RIGHT IN THE CORNER INSIDE THE 10-YARD LINE. AND THE DOLPHINS ALSO WILL BE PENALIZED.>>ILLEGAL BLOCK ON THE PLAY. NUMBER 23, RECEIVING TEAM. HALF-THE-DISTANCE PENALTY. FIRST AND 10.>>THAT’S JOE CARTER, RUNNING BACK JOE CARTER. THAT’S QUARTERBACK STEVE FULLER. HE HAD A COUPLE OF SEVERE INJURIES HIMSELF A YEAR AGO. IN TRAINING CAMP, HE SEPARATED HIS SHOULDER. SEPARATED IT AGAIN IN A GAME WE HAD WITH HIM AGAINST SAN DIEGO, BUT HE WAS ABLE TO COME BACK, AS WE LOOK AT THE HAPPY DOLPHINS, AND LEAD THE BEARS THROUGH THE FINAL FOUR GAMES AND INTO THE PLAYOFFS AND THE NFC CHAMPIONSHIP LOSS TO THE 49ers.>>A LITTLE EARLY TO BE CELEBRATING.>>EXACTLY.>>DOLPHINS, FIRST AND 10. THE BALL JUST OUTSIDE THEIR 5-YARD LINE. CLAYTON. DROPPED THE FOOTBALL. HE’S IN THE ARMS OF MIKE RICHARDSON. IT’LL BE SECOND AND 10, AND THIS IS ONE THAT COULD’VE BEEN CAUGHT.>>I’M A LITTLE SURPRISED AT THIS, THAT THE CHICAGO DEFENDERS ARE PLAYING OFF THESE GUYS. THEY’RE PRETTY TOUGH TO TRAP AT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE, BUT I THOUGHT THEY’D PLAY THEM A LITTLE TIGHTER AND TRY TO SLOW THEM DOWN SOMEWHAT COMING OFF THE BALL.>>THEY STARTED THAT EARLIER IN THE GAME, AND THEY DIDN’T HAVE ANY SUCCESS WITH IT — AT LEAST THE FIRST HALF. I IMAGINE THEY CHANGED SOME OF THEIR DEFENSIVE PHILOSOPHY AFTER THAT FIRST HALF.>>THAT WAS A BRILLIANT PLAY BY RICHARDSON. HE JUST PULLED CLAYTON’S ARMS AWAY FROM THE FOOTBALL. STRIPPED HIM. IT’S SECOND AND 10. MARINO IS UP TO 250 YARDS. HE HAS THREE TOUCHDOWNS. FROM THE END ZONE. CLAYTON. GOT AWAY FROM RICHARDSON, BUT THEN HE WAS POUNDED BY WILBER MARSHALL. AND ANOTHER FLURRY OF EMOTION UNFOLDS ON THE FIELD. TEMPERS BEING CALMED AND SOOTHED. AND WE’RE GONNA GET THE PERSONAL FOUL AGAINST THE BEARS. NOT A GOOD PLACE TO GET IT. THEY HAD THE MIAMI DOLPHINS DEEP IN THEIR OWN TERRITORY AND IN TROUBLE. THIS WILL ALSO DRAW AN AUTOMATIC FIRST DOWN. PERSONAL FOUL WAS AGAINST WILBER MARSHALL.>>I HAVEN’T FIGURED OUT WHAT THE FOUL WAS YET. WE DIDN’T GET A GOOD SHOT OF IT. OBVIOUSLY DITKA IS MIGHTY UPSET ABOUT IT.>>I’D WANT TO GIVE HIM A LOT OF ROOM ON THE SIDELINES. THE FIRST DOWN FOR THE DOLPHINS AT THE 24-YARD LINE. TONY NATHAN BREAKS IT OFF THE RIGHT SIDE TO THE 38-YARD LINE. FIRST DOWN, DOLPHINS. 14-YARD PICKUP. YOU KNOW, WITH THE MARK DUPERS AND THE MARK CLAYTONS, THE MARINOS, THIS GUY REALLY DOES NOT GET THE CREDIT HE DESERVES. YEAR IN AND YEAR OUT — NOW IN HIS SEVENTH YEAR FROM ALABAMA — HE GIVES THEM THE BIG PLAY, WHETHER IT BE THROUGH THE AIR OR ON THE GROUND. ALREADY TONIGHT HAS GONE OVER THE 1,000-YARD MARK, RUSHING AND RECEIVING COMBINED, FOR THE THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR. CLAYTON. I DON’T BELIEVE THIS.>>I DON’T BELIEVE IT.>>CLAYTON WAS ALMOST UP FOR FIRST-DOWN YARDAGE. HE KEPT DANCING AROUND. AND HE IS GOING TO WIND UP LOSING YARDAGE.>>HE’S ONE OF THE FINEST RUNNERS, RECEIVERS, AFTER HE CATCHES THE BALL THAT I’VE EVER SEEN, SO I DON’T THINK THEY’RE GONNA CRITICIZE HIM TOO MUCH. OBVIOUSLY HE KNOWS HE MADE A MISTAKE.>>”ANYONE CAN MAKE YARDAGETHISWAY.”>>HE KNOWS HE MADE A MISTAKE.>>LOOK AT THAT MOVE HE MADE.>>I’M SURPRISED THEY TRIED TO TACKLE HIM.>>LET HIM KEEP GOING.>>YEAH.>>WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO TELL ME, O.J.?>>I DON’T THINK THEY’RE GONNA GET ON HIM TOO MUCH. HE KNOWS HE MADE A MISTAKE.>>YOU CAN STILL DOTHAT.HE LOSES ABOUT 1/2 A YARD AFTER HAVING GAINED ABOUT 9. WELL, I’M WORKING ON THE CLOCK, FOLKS. NAT MOORE IS WIDE OPEN, AND NAT MOORE GETS MARK CLAYTON OFF THE SCHNEID.>>[ CHUCKLES ]>>DAN MARINO PASSED THAT FOOTBALL ON A CLOTHESLINE 22 YARDS WHILE HE WAS MOVING BACKWARD. THAT’S SOME KIND OF STRENGTH. YOU WATCH DAN GET BACK THERE. HIS FEET AREN’T SET WHEN HE THROWS THIS BALL. HE’S ACTUALLY BACKING OFF A LITTLE BIT WHEN HE LETS IT GO.>>WOW. AND IT EVEN SPIRALS PRETTY.>>WE HAVEN’T MENTIONED MUCH ABOUT THIS DOLPHIN OFFENSIVE LINE. MARINO HAS THE QUICK RELEASE, AND THAT’S PROBABLY RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS SUCCESS TONIGHT, BUT THE LINE IS DOING AN EXCELLENT JOB FOR THEM.>>THE BEARS HAVE SACKED HIM ONCE. NATHAN. THAT PLAY CALLED “KEEP ‘EM HONEST.” HAMPTON IS THERE. NO GAIN. IT’LL BE SECOND DOWN AND 10. AND THAT OFFENSIVE LINE THAT YOU TALKED ABOUT, AS MARINO WILL EXPIRE THE FINAL SECONDS HERE IN THE THIRD QUARTER, HAS BEEN WRACKED WITH INJURIES OVER THE LAST FEW WEEKS. AND YOU’RE RIGHT. THEY’VE DONE A MAGNIFICENT JOB KEEPING THE BEARS’ PASS RUSHERS OFF MARINO. HARD-HITTING FOOTBALL GAME. THE DOLPHINS PLAYING SURPRISINGLY TOUGH ON DEFENSE. AND MARINO, WITH A VERY COURAGEOUS EFFORT ON THE PART OF HIS OFFENSIVE LINE, GETTING TIME TO THROW THE FOOTBALL. HE’S DONE IT WELL. 267 YARDS, THREE TOUCHDOWNS. HAD THE ONE INTERCEPTION. SACKED ONE TIME, AS I SAID. THAT’S ONLY THE 14th TIME THIS SEASON THIS DOLPHIN LINE HAS ALLOWED THE SACK — FAR AND AWAY THE LEAD IN THE NFL. DOLPHINS HAVE THE FOOTBALL AS WE BEGIN THE FOURTH QUARTER AT THE 48-YARD LINE OF THE BEARS. MARINO GOES DOWN, AND THE BALL IS LOOSE. THE BEARS — DID THEY COVER IT? STEVE CLARK LOOKED AS IF HE DUG IT OUT OF ONE OF THE BEARS WHO TRIED TO PICK IT UP. JON GIESLER. HENRY WAECHTER TRIED TO PICK IT UP AND RUN WITH IT. HAD HE FALLEN ON IT, THE BEARS WOULD HAVE HAD THE FOOTBALL NEAR THE 40-YARD LINE OF THE DOLPHINS. LET’S LOOK AT IT AGAIN. MARINO IS REALLY SMACKED, AS WE LOOK WITH THE REVERSE ANGLE, WHERE YOU CAN SEE IT SO MUCH BETTER. COMING RIGHT AROUND THE HORN IS DENT. POWDERS INTO MARINO. THE BALL IS LOOSE, AND HERE COMES WAECHTER. NOW, HE COULD HAVE FALLEN ON THAT. HE DIDN’T DO IT. GIESLER SLIDES UNDERNEATH, GETS THE RECOVERY, AND THINGS ARE GOING THE DOLPHINS’ WAY TONIGHT. THIRD DOWN AND 23. THAT’S ONE OF THE OLDEST RULES IN THIS GAME. THEY TEACH YOU THAT IN GRAMMAR SCHOOL.>>FALL ON THE BALL, AND ONCE YOU GET IT, IF YOU CAN GET UP AND RUN, THEN GET UP AND RUN.>>MARINO. LITTLE SPRINT OUT. THROWS IT AWAY AS RICHARDSON WAS PROVIDING EXCELLENT COVERAGE ON MARK CLAYTON, AS HE HAS DONE MUCH OF THE NIGHT. YOU’RE NOT GONNA COVER THE TWO MARKS ALL NIGHT. BUT RICHARDSON AND FRAZIER BOTH HAVE DONE FINE JOBS TONIGHT. [ WHISTLE BLOWS ] WELL, WE’LL SEE HOW THAT HOLDS UP. MEANWHILE, REGGIE ROBY IS BACK ON TO PUNT, HIS SECOND PUNT OF THE NIGHT. HE WAS HURRIED ON THE FIRST ONE. AND IT WAS NOT A GOOD PUNT. HERE’S KEITH ORTEGO, THE ROOKIE FROM McNEESE STATE. A LOT OF RESPECT FOR ROBY, WHO IS STANDING AT HIS OWN 25 AND WILL KICK FROM ABOUT THE 30. ORTEGO IS ALL THE WAY BACK AT HIS 15-YARD LINE. OH, THERE’S A ROBY PUNT. ORTEGO AT THE 8. GETS IT BACK OUT TO THE 21. 53-YARD PUNT IN LENGTH AND HEIGHT. CALL IT WHAT YOU WILL — DON SHULA, ORANGE BOWL MAGIC — BUT IT WAS A YEAR AGO TODAY THAT THE DOLPHINS LOST THE ONLY GAME THEY’VE LOST IN 18 GAMES HERE AT THE ORANGE BOWL. AND THEY ARE PLAYING THE UNDEFEATED CHICAGO BEARS TO A STANDSTILL TONIGHT. MIAMI LEADING 38-24. SELLOUT CROWD — 75,000-PLUS. AND I THINK THEY’RE ALMOST EXHAUSTED. THEY’VE BEEN CHANTING. THEY’VE BEEN ON THEIR FEET THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE NIGHT. THEY DELAYED THE GAME FOR, I KNOW, WELL OVER 10 MINUTES. AND THEY ARE NOISY ONCE AGAIN. THE BEARS AT THE 21-YARD LINE. FIRST DOWN AND 10. FULLER. GOING TO WILLIE GAULT, AND IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN PICKED OFF. WILLIAM JUDSON HAD IT IN HIS SIGHTS. HE JUST COULDN’T GET TO IT, AND IT COULD HAVE BEEN THAT WILLIE GAULT PREVENTED HIM FROM GETTING TO IT. MIGHT HAVE HAD JUST A BIT OF A HAND ON HIM. MIKE DITKA — HE HAS TURNED THIS FRANCHISE AROUND. CAME IN ’82 AFTER MANY YEARS AS A COACH UNDER TOM LANDRY AND JUST IMPROVED WITH EACH PASSING YEAR. IN ’82, HE WAS 3-6. ’83, HE WAS 8-8. LAST YEAR, 10-6. THEY WENT TO THE NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. THIS YEAR, HE’S ASSURED OF THE PLAYOFFS AND ASSURED OF HOME-FIELD ADVANTAGE RIGHT UP TO THE SUPER BOWL IF THEY CAN KEEP WINNING. SECOND AND 10. DRAW PLAY — PAYTON. LURCHES AND STRUGGLES OUT TO THE 24-YARD LINE. GAIN OF 3. IT’LL BE THIRD DOWN AND 7. BRUDZINSKI AND BETTERS BOTH IN ON THE STOP. LOOKING DOWN THE LINE FOR THE BEARS, THIS COMING SUNDAY, THEY’LL BE AT HOME FOR INDIANAPOLIS. THEN THEY MEET THE JETS AT GIANTS STADIUM. THAT GAME ON SATURDAY, THE 14th OF DECEMBER. AND THEN THEY FINISH AT DETROIT. JETS AND DETROIT WILL NOT BE EASY FOR THEM, PARTICULARLY DETROIT AT DETROIT. HERE’S THE CROWD. FULLER ON A BIT OF A SPRINT OUT. DRILLS IT IN. GETS THE COMPLETION. IT’S GENTRY OUT OF THE BACKFIELD. AND GENTRY HAS FIRST-DOWN YARDAGE. HE’S UP CLOSE TO THE 35-YARD LINE.>>FULLER IS LIMPING, AND HE MAY HAVE TO LEAVE THE GAME.>>YEP. FULLER IS LEAVING THE GAME. McMAHON PUTS THE HELMET ON ON THE SIDELINES. AND WILL WE SEE THE MAGIC THAT FULLER PROVIDED EARLIER IN THE SEASON ON A THURSDAY NIGHT GAME IN MINNESOTA? THE BEARS WERE TRAILING IN THE THIRD QUARTER BY 8 POINTS. HE CAME INTO THE FOOTBALL GAME. HIS FIRST TWO PASSES WERE TOUCHDOWNS. HE ULTIMATELY WOUND UP PASSING FOR OVER 230 YARDS AND THREE TOUCHDOWNS, BLOWING THE VIKES AWAY 33-24. HERE HE IS. HE HAS A FIRST AND 10 AT HIS OWN 34-YARD LINE. WE’LL TRY TO GET DEFINITIVE WORD ON STEVE FULLER. [ WHISTLE BLOWS ] AND HE WANTED TO DO EXACTLY WHAT WE SAW HIM DO IN MINNESOTA. HE WANTED TO GET IT UP ON TOP. WHISTLES BLOW.>>FALSE START, OFFENSIVE RIGHT TACKLE.>>OFFENSIVE RIGHT TACKLE — THAT WOULD BE KEITH VAN HORNE. THEY ARE… GETTING FULLER’S SHOE OFF. HE IS IN PAIN. APPEARS TO BE THE LEFT ANKLE. IT WAS A LOSS OF 5. IT’LL BE FIRST DOWN AND 15. THE BEARS AT THEIR OWN 29-YARD LINE.>>JIM McMAHON CERTAINLY ISN’T SHY. HE COMES IN THE GAME WITHOUT WARMING UP, AND HE WAS READY TO THROW THE BALL DOWNFIELD.>>HE WAS READY TO THROW IT OVER THE WEST COAST. HE FIRES UP THIS BALL CLUB. THAT’S MARGERUM. OUT OF BOUNDS.>>WELL, I CAN’T HELP BUT BELIEVE THAT McMAHON IS NOT 100% RIGHT NOW. IF HE WAS 100%, HE’D HAVE BEEN STARTING THIS FOOTBALL GAME. HE HASN’T PLAYED IN A FEW WEEKS, SO HE’S GONNA BE A LITTLE RUSTY, TOO, SO I’M NOT LOOKING FOR ANY KIND OF MIRACLES HERE.>>HE BRUISED HIS SHOULDER. EXCUSE ME, JOE. HE BRUISED HIS SHOULDER FOUR WEEKS AGO AGAINST GREEN BAY. THAT WAS THE LAST TIME HE PLAYED. HE WAS 9 OF 20, 91 YARDS IN THAT GAME, ONE TOUCHDOWN, NO INTERCEPTIONS. AND ON THE SIDELINES, THEY CONTINUE TO LOOK AT FULLER’S LEFT ANKLE. BEHIND JIM McMAHON IS MIKE TOMCZAK, THE ROOKIE FROM OHIO STATE. McMAHON HAS A SECOND AND 15. SUHEY. GOOD RUNNING BY SUHEY. OUT OVER THE 40, CLOSE TO THE 43. YARD AND A HALF SHORT OF THE FIRST DOWN. TRIPPED UP BY BUD BROWN. THAT PLAY — PAYTON GOING ONE WAY, A LITTLE FAKE TO PAYTON, AND THEN HANDING IT BACK INSIDE TO SUHEY.>>AS YOU CAN SEE, THEY’RE PULLING THEIR GUARD. HE DOES AN EXCELLENT JOB. JIM COVERT, BIG TACKLE, I SHOULD SAY, PULLED AROUND THERE, MADE A NICE BLOCK. AND SUHEY DOES WHAT HE DOES BEST, JUST GET UPFIELD. DON’T DO NOTHING FANCY. HIS NAME ISN’T PAYTON.>>WE’RE IN THE FOURTH QUARTER, LESS THAN 12 MINUTES TO PLAY. MIAMI DOMINATING CHICAGO THUS FAR, 38-24. THE BEARS HAVE A THIRD AND 1 AT THEIR 44-YARD LINE. LONG COUNT, TRYING TO DRAW MIAMI OFF. IT DID NOT WORK IN THAT RESPECT, AND BOKAMPER COVERS WALTER PAYTON, WHO STRUGGLED UP FOR THE FIRST DOWN. NOW, THAT IS WALTER PAYTON FOR YOU. WE WAS HIT WELL BEHIND THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. JUST USED HIS STRENGTH, HIS GUILE, AND EVERYTHING THAT MAKES THIS MAN ONE OF THE ALL-TIME GREATS FOR SURE.>>THAT’S INCREDIBLE, AS WE LOOK AT THE SPRAINED LEFT ANKLE OF FULLER. BUT THAT WAS AN INCREDIBLE EFFORT BY WALTER. IN A KEY GAME LIKE THIS — I CAN’T SAY IT’S KEY, BUT FOR THE PLAYERS IT’S A KEY GAME. THEY WANT TO STAY UNDEFEATED.>>FULLER LEFT THE GAME 11 OF 22, 169 YARDS, ONE TOUCHDOWN, TWO INTERCEPTIONS. PAYTON KEEPS THE DRIVE ALIVE, AND THE BEARS HAVE A FIRST DOWN AND 10 AT THEIR OWN 45. CHARLES, THE NOSE TACKLE, COMES DOWN ON McMAHON. FIVE SACKS FOR THE MUCH-MALIGNED DOLPHIN DEFENSE. INTO TONIGHT, 26th IN THE NFL, 23rd AGAINST THE RUSH, 23rd AGAINST THE PASS. IT WAS A LOSS OF ONLY 2, AS McMAHON WAS ABLE TO GET BACK TOWARD THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. IT’LL BE SECOND DOWN AND 12. THE CHANT IS “DEFENSE!” McMAHON ON A SPRINT OUT. MIKE DITKA, I’M SURE, WAS HOLDING HIS BREATH ON THE SIDELINE. McMAHON ALREADY WITH A SORE SHOULDER, UNABLE TO START TONIGHT, EVEN THOUGH WE WERE TOLD HE WOULD BE READY, AND HE IS INDEED IN THERE, HAS A VERY SORE RIGHT SHOULDER. HE GOES FOR A GAIN OF 6 YARDS. IT’LL BE THIRD AND 4. AND THAT IS DENNIS McKINNON. HE ALSO HAS AN ICE BAG ON THE BENCH. HE HAS IT IN AN AREA WHERE IT COULD BE A PULLED HAMSTRING — BACK OF THAT LEFT LEG.>>IT’S NOT SO BAD THAT McMAHON WANTS TO PLAY, WANTS TO TRY TO GET THE FIRST DOWN, BUT THE TROUBLE WITH HIM IS HE DON’T KNOW WHEN TO GO DOWN. ON THAT PLAY, HE SHOULD HAVE WENT DOWN.>>HE GIVES IT EVERYTHING HE HAS, BOY.>>MARGERUM IS IN THERE FOR McKINNON, TOP OF YOUR SCREEN. WIDE OPEN. MARGERUM. AND A FLAG IS DOWN. AGAINST THE DOLPHINS. SO THE GAIN INSIDE THE 30-YARD LINE WILL HOLD. A PICKUP OF 20 YARDS. MARGERUM WAS REALLY OPEN.>>ILLEGAL USE OF THE HANDS, NUMBER 99, DEFENSE. PENALTY IS DECLINED. FIRST DOWN.>>IT WAS THE ROOKIE GEORGE LITTLE, ILLEGAL USE OF HANDS. AND LOOK AT MARGERUM, SPINNING AND TWISTING DON McNEAL. THAT’S WHERE HE IS REALLY TALENTED. SOME OF THE BEST MOVES I’VE EVER SEEN IN A COLLEGIATE FOOTBALL PLAYER WHEN HE WAS AT STANFORD. BEARS ON THE PROWL — 29-YARD LINE OF THE DOLPHINS. FIRST AND 10. MARGERUM. TO THE 17. AND THERE ARE QUARTERBACKS, AND THERE ARE QUARTERBACKS WHO BRING MAGIC TO A FOOTBALL TEAM. McMAHON IS A TYPE OF QUARTERBACK, A BOBBY LAYNE, IF YOU WILL — PARDON ME, JOE — A JOE NAMATH, IF YOU WILL. SOMETHING DIFFERENT HAPPENS WHEN THEY COME INTO A FOOTBALL GAME. THIS TEAM BELIEVES IN McMAHON. NOT THAT THEY DON’T BELIEVE IN FULLER. HE TOOK THEM TO THE NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. BUT McMAHON IS SPECIAL TO THIS BALL CLUB. MOVEMENT ON THE RIGHT SIDE, AND THAT COULD BE BECAUSE OF THE CROWD. NO WAY THE BEARS COULD HAVE HEARD THE SNAP.>>FALSE START, 71, OFFENSE.>>WE’LL PAUSE FIVE SECONDS AND ALLOW OUR STATIONS TO IDENTIFY THEMSELVES. IF YOU JOINED US LATE, THE CHICAGO BEARS, 12-0, UNDEFEATED, LOOKING TO GO 13-0 TONIGHT, AGAINST THE 8-4 MIAMI DOLPHINS, LOOKING TO STAY WITH NEW ENGLAND AND THE JETS. WE HAVE 8:15. THE CLOCK IS TICKING AWAY HERE IN THE FOURTH QUARTER. AND THE MIAMI DOLPHINS HAVE BEEN EVER SO EFFECTIVE DEFENSIVELY AGAINST CHICAGO. GOOD ON OFFENSE, INCREDIBLE DEFENSE. THE DOLPHINS LEADING THE CHICAGO BEARS 38-24. THE BEARS HAVE A FIRST AND 15. THE QUARTERBACK IS JIM McMAHON, IN RELIEF OF STEVE FULLER. MARGERUM. RUNNING WITH LANKFORD. McMAHON THROWS IT AWAY.>>BOY, HE REALLY GAVE ANDY FREDERICK A PIECE OF HIS MIND ON THE PREVIOUS PLAY. ANDY WAS THE GUY WHO HAD THE OFFSIDES PENALTY.>>BEEN MAKING SOME MENTAL MISTAKES OUT THERE. COACH DOESN’T MIND — WELL, HE DOESN’T LIKE HIS FOOTBALL TEAM TO GET WHIPPED, BUT MEANTIME, THEY’RE MAKING MENTAL MISTAKES. THAT LAST PLAY, CALVIN THOMAS, NUMBER 33, AND WALTER PAYTON RAN INTO EACH OTHER. ONE OF THE TWO WENT THE WRONG WAY, AND, OF COURSE, THE PREVIOUS PLAY, HE HAD AN OFFSIDES PENALTY.>>SECOND DOWN, 15. MATT SUHEY. HE’LL LOSE YARDAGE TO THE 29-YARD LINE. BOB BRUDZINSKI WAS THERE. MIKE CHARLES, WHO’S PLAYING A WHALE OF A GAME AT NOSE TACKLE, WAS ALSO THERE.>>BRUDZINSKI DID AN EXCELLENT JOB ON THAT. IT APPEARED AS IF HE WANTED TO BLITZ THE QUARTERBACK. HE STARTED TO BLITZ. HE SAW THAT SUHEY WAS NOT GONNA BLOCK HIM, AND HE CAME OFF THE BLITZ AND COVERED HIM.>>THE BEARS TELEGRAPHED THAT PLAY ALL THE WAY, AND BOB BRUDZINSKI READ IT.>>IT WAS ABOUT A YEAR AGO — I THINK YOU MIGHT BOTH REMEMBER, O.J. AND JOE NAMATH — UP IN OUR BOOTH WITH A SEVERELY SPRAINED KNEE WAS MIKE CHARLES. HE MISSED THE LAST SIX GAMES OF THE YEAR. AND HE CAME BACK AND IS PLAYING RIGHT DEFENSIVE END THIS YEAR. BAUMHOWER COULDN’T COME BACK, SO THEY PUT HIM IN AT NOSE TACKLE, AND HE’S PLAYING A GREAT GAME TONIGHT. DOWN GOES McMAHON. THAT’S MACK MOORE. CONSECUTIVE SACKS. AND THE BEARS, WHO HAD A FIRST AND 10 AT THE 17-YARD LINE, ARE ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE 41-YARD LINE. THE SIXTH SACK OF THE NIGHT. BUTLER IS OUT ON THE FIELD. AND THEY’VE PULLED HIM BACK. IT’S FOURTH DOWN. FOURTH DOWN AND A BUNDLE. I DON’T UNDERSTAND THIS. 34 YARDS. THIS GAME, WITH 6:35, YOU’RE DOWN BY TWO TOUCHDOWNS. YOU GOT A FOURTH DOWN AND 34. I BELIEVE IN THE DEFENSE, BUT NOT THIS MUCH. JUDSON… BRINGS IT OUT, AS WELL HE SHOULD. THE INTERCEPTION IN THE END ZONE, WHICH WAS ILL-ADVISED, WOULD HAVE GIVEN THE DOLPHINS THE BALL AT THE 20. ALL HE HAD TO DO WAS KNOCK IT DOWN TO GET IT AT THE 40. SO HE BRINGS IT OUT AND GETS IT ALMOST BACK TO THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE.>>WELL, HE GETS PAID BY THE INTERCEPTIONS.>>FLAG IS DOWN.>>I’VE NEVER SEEN A DEFENSIVE BACK NOT CATCH ONE WHEN THEY CAN.>>THIRD INTERCEPTION FOR THE DOLPHINS. HERE’S ONE OF THOSE CALLS — DID IT HAPPEN BEFORE OR AFTER? 6:12 REMAINING IN THE GAME. HERE IS GORDON McCARTER.>>THE WHISTLE WAS BLOWN AFTER THE INTERCEPTION IN THE END ZONE. THAT MAKES THE RESULT OF THE PLAY A TOUCHBACK. THE LATER ACTION WAS A PERSONAL FOUL, NUMBER 57, CHICAGO. WE WILL GO FROM THE 20 TO THE 35. FIRST AND 10, MIAMI.>>WELL, IT’S RULED A TOUCHBACK, AND THE PERSONAL FOUL WILL BE MARKED OFF AGAINST THE BEARS, SO IT’LL BE FIRST DOWN AND 10 AT THE 35-YARD LINE. 6:12 REMAINING. I DON’T KNOW ABOUT A FOURTH AND 34 FROM YOUR OWN 40-YARD LINE… WHEN YOU’RE ONLY TWO TOUCHDOWNS DOWN, YOU HAVE 6:12 REMAINING. BUT THEN, YOU’RE ALSO 12-0. NATHAN. GETS A YARD.>>YOU’RE LOOKING AT ONE OF THE WEAKNESSES OF THIS MIAMI TEAM, THE FACT THEY CANNOT RUN THE FOOTBALL. WHEN YOU HAVE A GOOD LEAD, YOU WANT TO RUN THE BALL. HISTORICALLY, YOU WOULD HAVE SEEN A LOT OF CSONKA AND MERCURY MORRIS RIGHT NOW. AND OVER THE YEARS, THEY PUT TOGETHER SOME 8- AND 9-MINUTE DRIVES.>>QUICK LOOK AT MIKE SINGLETARY, A GREAT MIDDLE LINEBACKER. HE WAS LOOKING OVER TO BUDDY RYAN ON THE BENCH, GETTING THE PLAY SIGNALED IN. STEPPED INTO THE HUDDLE AND SPREAD IT AROUND. SECOND DOWN AND 9. NATHAN. AND THERE IS A VETERAN MOVE. NATHAN DOES NOT GO OUT OF BOUNDS, GETS THE FIRST DOWN. HE COULD HAVE GOT A COUPLE OF MORE YARDS OUT OF IT, BUT HE DID NOT WANT TO STOP THAT CLOCK, WHICH CONTINUES TO MOVE DOWN TOWARDS THE 5 MINUTES REMAINING.>>YOU’RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT, FRANK. ON THAT PLAY, THIS PLAY WAS DESIGNED TO GO INSIDE, AND NATHAN HAD PLENTY OF ROOM, IT APPEARED, IN THERE. BUT BEING A GOOD INSTINCTIVE RUNNER, HE SAW HE COULD GET MORE ROOM OUTSIDE, WENT OUTSIDE. IT LOOKED AS IF HE WAS GONNA RUN DOWN THE SIDELINE AND BE PUSHED OUT OF BOUNDS, BUT BEING THE HEADS-UP VETERAN THAT HE IS, HE STAY INBOUND, AND THE CLOCK IS STILL MOVING.>>WHAT HE HAS MEANT TO THIS FOOTBALL TEAM OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS. PLAYING IN THE SHADOW OF THE TWO MARKS AND, OF COURSE, MARINO. FIRST DOWN, MIAMI. WOODY BENNETT GOES DOWN IN THE ARMS OF DAN HAMPTON.>>THEY HAVE TO START WONDERING WHAT A LOSS LIKE THIS — IF, IN FACT, THE BEARS DO LOSE THE GAME — WHAT THIS KIND OF LOSS IS GONNA DO TO THEM. I THINK IT’S GONNA MAKE THEM A BETTER FOOTBALL TEAM, AND I’LL TELL YOU WHY. I THINK THEY’VE BEEN A LITTLE BIT RELAXED, A LITTLE LACKADAISICAL COMING INTO THIS GAME. THEY’VE BEEN BLOWING THE OTHER TEAMS AWAY. I THINK DAN MARINO, MARK DUPER, AND CLAYTON JUST SAID, “HEY, FELLAS, TRY AND STOP US,” AND THEY COULDN’T STOP THEM. THEY KNOW THEY CAN BE HAD NOW, AND THEY’RE GONNA CONCENTRATE MORE. THEY’VE MADE A LOT OF MENTAL ERRORS TONIGHT THAT I KNOW DITKA’S GONNA BE UPSET WITH. SECOND DOWN AND 9. LESS THAN 4 MINUTES REMAINING. NATHAN AGAIN. AND HE WORKS INSIDE THE 40 TO THE 38. GAIN OF ABOUT 3. IT’LL BE THIRD DOWN AND 6. AND IT IS LOOKING MORE AND MORE AS THOUGH THE DOLPHINS WILL BACK INTO A TIE WITH NEW ENGLAND AND THE JETS IN THE AFC EASTERN DIVISION. AND THIS GAME HAS GOT TO GIVE THEM A TREMENDOUS BOOST. WAY DOWN IN THE STANDINGS IN THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE DEFENSIVELY.>>I THINK EGO-WISE IT MAY HURT THE BEARS, BUT AS FAR AS THEY’RE CONCERNED, THEY KNOW THERE HAVE BEEN SOME GREAT PITTSBURGH TEAMS, SOME GREAT GREEN BAY TEAMS, AND THEY’VE LOST GAMES. THEY’RE STILL THE BEST TEAM IN FOOTBALL.>>BUT NOT TONIGHT.>>NATHAN. SHORT OF THE FIRST DOWN AT THE 34. IT’LL BE FOURTH DOWN AND 2.>>YOU CAN’T HELP BUT WONDER ABOUT ALL THESE ALBUMS AND THINGS AND COMMERCIALS THAT THESE BALLPLAYERS ARE DOING, IF IT DID, IN FACT, HURT THEIR CONCENTRATION. YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU’RE WINNING FOOTBALL GAMES, EVERYONE’S HAPPY. EVERYTHING’S GOING NICELY. BUT THE MINUTE YOU LOSE ONE, START LOOKING AROUND, POINTING THE FINGER. YOU GUYS ARE SPENDING TOO MUCH TIME CUTTING RECORDS.>>DON SHULA IS LOOKING FOR THE FINAL NAIL. FAUD REVEIZ COMES ON. IT WILL BE A 52-YARD ATTEMPT. HE MADE ONE IN COLLEGE AT TENNESSEE FROM 60 YARDS OUT. LONG COUNT. THEY LOOK FOR THE OFFSIDE. AND DON SHULA WILLING TO RISK THE BLOCK, LOOKING FOR THE 3 POINTS THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE FINAL NAIL WITH 2:27 REMAINING IN THE GAME. BUT REVEIZ WAS WIDE TO THE LEFT. AND THE BEARS HAVE A MAN-SIZE ORDER. THEY TRAIL BY 14. THEY HAVE 2:27 REMAINING IN THE GAME. WILL HE GET THE 20 YARDS? HE’S TIED WITH MY FRIEND IN THE BOOTH O.J. SIMPSON, EARL CAMPBELL WITH SEVEN CONSECUTIVE 100-YARD GAMES. AND I KNOW, O.J., IF IT’S ON MY MIND, IT MUST BE ON YOUR MIND.>>I’M SURE WHEREVER EARL CAMPBELL IS, HE’S WONDERING ABOUT IT, AND I’M CERTAINLY WONDERING ABOUT IT RIGHT NOW.>>HE CAN STAND ALONE WITH 20 MORE YARDS AS THE ONLY PLAYER IN THE HISTORY OF THIS GAME TO HAVE EIGHT CONSECUTIVE 100-YARD GAMES. FIRST AND 10, THE BEARS, INSIDE THEIR OWN 35-YARD LINE. 2:27 REMAINING. THIS IS WALTER PAYTON. THERE’S 8 OF THEM. IT’LL BE SECOND DOWN AND 2.>>I THINK IT’S ON DITKA’S MIND, ALSO. I CAN’T THINK OF A BACK WHO’S MORE DESERVING THAN WALTER. YOU DON’T REALLY THINK ABOUT RECORDS, AND THAT’S WHY HE’S GETTING THEM. HE DOESN’T THINK ABOUT GETTING RECORDS, AND THAT’S WHEN THEY FALL.>>BEARS WOULD LIKE TO GET A PLAY OFF. 2-MINUTE WARNING COMING UP. PAYTON. PAYTON TO THE 47-YARD LINE. GETS THE FIRST DOWN AND ABOUT 4. AND WE WILL GET THE 2-MINUTE WARNING. BEARS’ UNBEATEN SEASON IN DESPERATE JEOPARDY. WE’LL BE RIGHT BACK. BEARS HAVE A FIRST DOWN. THE BALL IS AT THEIR OWN 48-YARD LINE. THEY TRAIL BY TWO TOUCHDOWNS. TREMENDOUS TEAM EFFORT ON THE PART OF THE DEFENSE FOR THE DOLPHINS TONIGHT. THEY CAME IN SO LOWLY RATED DEFENSIVELY IN THE NFL. HIGHLY SUSPECT PARTICULARLY AGAINST THE RUN. EVERY GREAT RUNNER HAS TORN THEM UP THIS YEAR. I’M THINKING OF FREEMAN McNEIL, WILDER. FIRST DOWN. McMAHON IS BACK. MARGERUM. WENT TO HIS KNEES, WAS ABLE TO GET UP AND GET THE COMPLETION. JUST A LITTLE SHORT, I BELIEVE, OF THE FIRST DOWN. CLOCK CONTINUING TO TICK OF VALUABLE SECONDS, AND UNFORTUNATELY THERE’S ALWAYS ONE OR TWO IN A CROWD LIKE THIS. 1:36 NOW SHOWS ON THE SCOREBOARD CLOCK. IT’LL BE SECOND DOWN AND LESS THAN A YARD.>>DON’T THINK FOR ONE MINUTE THE BEARS THINK THIS GAME IS OVER YET.>>JIM McMAHON HAS NEVER THOUGHT ANY OF THE GAMES WERE OVER. TIME RAN OUT A FEW TIMES. PAYTON. OH. WHAT A MOVE WALTER PAYTON PUT ON MACK MOORE. BALL IS LOOSE. DOLPHINS SAY THEY HAVE IT. PAYTON HAS TURNED IT OVER TWICE. AND HE IS SHORT OF THE 100 YARDS.>>HE’LL GET ANOTHER CHANCE. CHICAGO HAS THREE TIME-OUTS.>>WE HAVE PAYTON, UNOFFICIALLY, AT 97 YARDS.>>THIS IS — THIS IS — THIS IS BECAUSE HE WORKS SO HARD. AND YOU SAW HIM MAKE A GREAT MOVE BACK THERE, AND I THINK HE GETS THE YARDAGE TO THE SPOT OF THE FUMBLE.>>AND… OURS HE’S UNOFFICIALLY AT 98 YARDS. 1:16 REMAINING. MIAMI HAS THE FOOTBALL AT THEIR OWN 36-YARD LINE, AND THEY HAVE THIS GAME. WALTER PAYTON HAS 98 YARDS. 1:16 REMAINING. WILL THE BEARS GET IT BACK? THIS IS BENNETT, LEFT SIDE. AND THE BEARS WILL CALL TIME-OUT. IT’S SECOND DOWN AND 9. BEARS HAVE TWO TIME-OUTS. NATHAN. OVER THE 40 TO THE 42. IT’LL BE THIRD DOWN AND 4. THIS TELECAST IS PRESENTED BY THE AUTHORITY OF THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE. IT’S INTENDED FOR THE PRIVATE USE OF OUR AUDIENCE. ANY REBROADCAST OR OTHER USE OF THIS TELECAST WITHOUT THE EXPRESSED WRITTEN CONSENT OF THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE IS PROHIBITED. UPDATED STANDINGS. THEY’RE ALL BUNCHED AT THE TOP, THE DOLPHINS, THE PATRIOTS, AND THE JETS. TWO WEEKS FROM TONIGHT, WE’LL BE BACK IN THE ORANGE BOWL TO BRING YOU THE MEETING BETWEEN THE DOLPHINS AND NEW ENGLAND.>>THAT YOUNG MR. EASON UP THERE IN NEW ENGLAND IS DOING A FINE JOB. HE’S HEALTHY AGAIN, AND THIS GAME HE HAD LAST WEEK WAS A PRETTY REMARKABLE GAME. COACH BERRY REALLY IS HIGH ON HIS TONY EASON.>>OH, THEY GOT FIVE IN A ROW OUT OF STEVE GROGAN. NOW EASON IS DEALING WITH THE HOT HAND. SUNDAY NIGHT, WE’LL BE IN SAN DIEGO. THE STEELERS IN A MUST-WIN DEAL THERE — ONE GAME BEHIND THE CLEVELAND BROWNS IN THE AFC EAST — MEET DAN FOUTS, LIONEL “LITTLE TRAIN” JAMES, THE ONLY BACK IN FOOTBALL WITH OVER 2,000 COMBINED YARDS THIS SEASON. HE HAS 2,051 YARDS RUSHING, RECEPTION, AND RETURNS THIS SEASON. HE WILL BE COMPLEMENTING DAN FOUTS AND A DEFENSE THAT’S STARTING TO PLAY A LITTLE FOOTBALL DOWN THERE FOR DON CORYELL.>>SHOULD BE QUITE A GAME. NEW ENGLAND HASN’T WON HERE SINCE 1966. THAT’S ALMOST AS BAD AS BUFFALO, BUT BUFFALO HAS WON HERE, I GUESS, WITH CHUCK KNOX IN THE LATTER PART OF THE ’70s, EARLY PART OF THE ’80s.>>DID YOU EVER WIN HERE, O.J., AGAINST THE DOLPHINS?>>NEVER IN MY WHOLE CAREER. WE PLAYED THEM TWICE A YEAR.>>ORANGE BOWL MAGIC. NATHAN GOES DOWN. AND THERE WILL BE ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY, IT DOES APPEAR, FOR WALTER PAYTON. AS THE BEARS USE THEIR FINAL TIME-OUT. REGGIE ROBY IS ON. KEITH ORTEGO IS BACK FOR THE BEARS. WALTER PAYTON NEEDS 2 YARDS TO STAND ATOP THOSE WHO HAVE RACED FOR CONSECUTIVE 1,000-YARD SEASONS — OR 100-YARD GAMES. HE HASN’T DONE BAD IN THE 1,000-YARD SEASONS, EITHER, HAS HE?>>HE’S BEEN DOING IT.>>OH, HE’S REMARKABLE. ROBY… TAKES ORTEGO TO THE 9-YARD LINE. AND THE BEARS GET IT BACK WITH 48 SECONDS REMAINING ON THE CLOCK. 49-YARD PUNT, A 9-YARD RETURN.>>AND NOT ONLY WOULD I PUT MY CAR UP, I’LL PUT MY HOUSE ON WHO CARRIES THE BALL.>>THE RECORDS JUST KEEP COMING. IF HE CAN GET 2 YARDS, IT WILL BE HIS EIGHTH CONSECUTIVE 100-YARD GAME, THAT AN NFL RECORD, ALL ALONE. HE’S TIED NOW WITH O.J. AND EARL CAMPBELL. WE’VE TOLD YOU MANY TIMES TONIGHT. HE’S VERY CLOSE TO REPLACING TONY GALBREATH AS THE ALL-TIME LEADING RECEIVER AS A RUNNING BACK. HE HAS WELL OVER 400 RECEPTIONS. AND THROUGH IT ALL, THE MAN HAS KEPT HIS COOL, HIS MODESTY, HIS PERSONALITY. PAYTON — FIRST DOWN. THERE IT IS.>>ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST.>>THEY ALL DO, O.J.>>AND WE ALL KNOW WALTER PAYTON WOULD GLADLY EXCHANGE THAT RECORD FOR A VICTORY TONIGHT, WHICH HE’S NOT GOING TO GET.>>FINAL SECONDS TICKING OFF. BEARS WILL NOT GO UNDEFEATED, BUT THEY HAVE PUT LIFE AND A SPARK INTO FOOTBALL IN GENERAL AND CHICAGO IN PARTICULAR. PAYTON OUT OVER THE 40-YARD LINE. DROPPED BY LYLE BLACKWOOD. I GUESS THAT’S TO MAKE SURE IN CASE THEY DIDN’T COUNT IT PROPERLY. WHAT A VICTORY FOR THE DOLPHINS. AS DOLPHIN PLAYERS CONGRATULATE WALTER PAYTON. AND DAN MARINO REIGNS SUPREME ONCE AGAIN. PAYTON ON THE NIGHT WILL WIND UP WITH 121 YARDS. DON SHULA HAS WON HIS NINTH GAME OF THE SEASON. AND HE HAS THE DOLPHINS IN A TIE WITH THE JETS AND NEW ENGLAND.

  2. I’m sorry Chicago … this was not your night ! I was there… it was a Dolphin night … helluva a game !

  3. I didn't know McMahon didn't play till now. I was at basketball practice during this game no wonder they lost. He was Steve Young back then.

  4. Way it was spoze to happen… Bears play miami in SB XX .. Bears play the nickel back and rotate wilber marshall brilliantly, come out for revenge, McMahon starts, bears go wild for buddy, payton scores twice bears win handily.. instead we got the Pats.. still mad

  5. Not many knowledgeable football people would have picked dolphins if they met in super bowl… it was pretty obvious nobody was beating a full bore bear attack

  6. man. the mob got paid on this 1: Miami Orange Bowl. Hmmmm…. was that 72 fin unit legit, and the bears win this 13th game(marinos number),would a mob ensue because of fraud.

  7. If Dan had a good team around him especially a defense he would of gone down as the best quarterbacks ever played a game he was a pure beautiful passing QB.

  8. Don Shula and Dan Marino did the bears a favor I really wanted the bears to win that game but this game put the bears on the road to winning that Superbowl thank you Don Shula and Dan Marino you are the greatest !

  9. And anyone else that knows football and what the bears had that season knows the dolphins couldn't of beaten the Chicago bears

  10. When you say that ordinary Brady is the best in history, I think that you don't know the wonderful Dan Marino.

  11. Yep, Miami won one game that kept there undefeated season an exception.  But the bears won the Title.  McMahon earns TWO Super Bowl rings during his career, Marino ZERO.

  12. The 1985 chicago bears, the greatest single season TEAM vs. THE 1985 miami DOLPHINS, DEFENDERS of the Perfect Year.

  13. As a life-long Patriot fan, (going back to '75), I normally rooted against the Fins but not that day. The Bears had made a lot of noise during the week about Miami being a "finesse" team they were going to devour them, instead we saw a determined Miami execute a great game plan. interestingly, the Pats eventually went to the SB vs the Bears and man was that ugly, their run-first offense had no chance vs the Bears.

  14. This was in the middle of the 80's with the decades best defense. I don't see the mauling of receivers that supposedly happened on every play, in fact it's the opposite. Free releases, WRs are barely ever touched. Bottom line, today's QBs would destroy the 80s.

  15. 1:42:45 back in the day when the crowd was too loud, they would halt play. Can you imagine a visiting team asking the refs to do that against Seattle or New Orleans?

  16. Would’ve absolutely loved to see what would’ve happened had Marino gotten back to the super bowl and faced the bears again. Damn shame they choked against the patriots. That would’ve been one hell of a rematch.

  17. 1:50:35 "I would give [Ditka] a lot of room on the sidelines."

Given what he smells like, that would be true in general.

  18. How did Miami go from one of the best teams in the 70s 80s and 90s to now one of the worst since Marino and Shula left.. we haven't been relevant in over 20 years. . it was the same with the Pats in those years , but it's all cyclical.. when Brady and Belichick leave, they will be back to the basement and hopefully with a great qb and a good coach, we'll be back at the top again for many years to come. We shall see..

  19. 24:44 Excellent. She certainly nailed her 6 seconds of fame, even getting in the "Hi, Mom" at the end. Very poised from start to finish. On ABC Monday Night Football back in the mid 1980s with those ABC cameramen and their director, any person could suddenly find themselves in the national spotlight with at least 100 million viewers observing their every move. But most particularly if you were young, attractive, female, and an NFL cheerleader. She was ready. Outstanding. And what an infamous game to get yourself recorded on film, if only for a moment. For then, for now, for posterity. Beautiful. Good job !!!

  20. This should have been a preview of the Super Bowl that year. New England upsetting Miami in the playoffs may be one of the biggest upsets ever

  21. You notice Mike Ditka had already gone to the locker room when the game was over , didn't even shake hands with Shula. He was ready to rip into the players for losing a game. All I can say to him is ''Suck My Ditka''!!!!!!!

  22. Too bad McMahon wasn't healthy enough to play the entire game. They would have had a much better chance of winning the game and staying undefeated.

  23. On the way to the Superbowl to blow out the dolphins after the 1984 season ,Joe Montana and the 49ers blew out the Chicago bears 46 defense. Prior to the 1985 draft bears defensive coordinator buddy Ryan pleaded with management to get a quality corner in the draft even if it meant trading up instead of taking William The refrigerator Perry. The bears did not listen. Why would the dolphins be able to expose this bears defense when they had not been able to expose the 49er defense less than 10 months earlier in the Super Bowl? Because the 49ers had the best secondary in football as they had drafted there brilliantly. And because the 46 defense behind the front seven had a secondary that was well below average despite safety Dave Duerson thanks to the corners. Meanwhile the person they drafted in the first round, William The refrigerator Perry, in the interior of the line could not beat dolphin All-Pro center Dwight Stevenson. Jerry Gray, a small safety with speed and ideal to convert to corner ,could have been had if the bears made a trade to move up just three picks in the first round. Grey would soon earn four selections to the pro bowl.

  24. Fast release is replicated by really good current QB. The one thing i see so unique if Marino is his fade passes. They look like freakin basket ball fades!

  25. I watched way too much sports television back in the 1980s, so many that I have forgotten a few of them over the years. This particular game, I do remember because everyone in my high school wondered if the mighty Chicago Bears could go 16-0 in the regular season! That 1985 NFL season was very special for Mike Ditka because everything seemed to fall into place that season, just like the 1982-1983 NBA Season for Billy Cunningham and his 76ers! The mighty Bears did not reach 16-0, and the sensational, fast break 76ers did not reach 70 wins in a regular season. However, both teams won their respective championships in their athletic disciplines with indelible levels of excellence in their finest championship season! Both teams only won one title in the 1980s in their respective athletic venues.
