PEOPLE IN THE BLACKHAWK SCHOOL DISTRICT ARE DEALING WITH A MESSY SITUATION. ENVIRONMENTAL EXPERTS SAY THAT THEY FOUND EVIDENCE OF FECAL BACTERIA ON A DARLINGTON FOOTBALL FIELD. AND NOW THE SCHOOL OFFICIALS ARE IN DISCUSSION ABOUT WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR THE FIELD. BRENDA WATERS HAS THE STORY NEW AT 6:00. Reporter: A FENCE SURROUNDS THE DARLINGTON FOOTBALL FIELD. THE SCOREBOARD, SCORELESS, AND EMPTY BLEACHES SIT GLISTENING IN THE SUN. FOR DECADES THIS FIELD HAD BEEN HOME TO THE LACK HAWK COUGARS FOOTBALL TEAM AND THEN CAME AN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY STUDY. THOSE RESULTS WERE RELEASED A LITTLE MORE THAN A WEEK AGO. WHAT THAT STUDY FOUND WAS EVIDENCE OF FECAL BACTERIA RIGHT DOWN THERE ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD. I PLAYED FOOTBALL THERE, WATCHED MANY FOOTBALL GAMES THERE. Reporter: WAS THERE AN ODOR WHEN YOU WERE PLAYING GAME ? COULD YOU SMELL SOMETHING? THERE WAS A LITTLE BIT OF ODOR. THE SEWAGE IN DARLINGTON IS NOT THE BEST. Reporter: AND THERE LIES THE PROBLEM. ACCORDING TO THE SCHOOL DISTRICT’S WEB SITE, THE FIELD SITS ON THE PRIMARY SCHOOL PROPERTY AND DIRECTLY ABOVE THE FACILITY’S MORE THAN 50-YEAR- OLD SEWAGE LEACH BED. AT TIMES THE END ZONE OF THE FIELD BECAME SWAMPY AND THERE WAS AN ODOR OF SEWAGE. THE TEST RESULTS REVEALED FECAL FORMS DETECTED IN 10 OF THE 24 SAMPLES. THE DISTRICT SAYS THERE IS NO INDICATION THAT THE FIELD POSE AS HEALTH RISK, BUT IT IS CLOSED OUT OF AN ABUNDANCE OF CAUTION. IT STINKS.
