Football Head Coach Tony Annese interview 10-19-17

Well you know everyone thinks I’m just
trying to be coy but you know the truth is you know Reggie hasn’t really been
able to do a lot you know throughout the course of you know the last five weeks
and and the ankle really progressed slowly and then you know this
week he’s tried to go out there and practice on Tuesday if I had to say
whether he played or not I would have guessed no but today he really looked
good so I’m gonna name him the starter you guys get the scoop Reggie Bell will
be starting Saturday against Grand Valley. Yeah absolutely you know Travis has done
a great job you know that the biggest thing is you know the the understudies
have been diligent you know Jevon Shaw role in there and done his deal and so
has Bret Mooney to a certain degree but so it’s it’s a balancing act trying to
measure which reps everyone takes you know and and so you know you got you
know three quarterbacks sharing raps last week this week we basically had two
quarterbacks sharing reps that was Reggie and Travis but you know Reggie’s
really progressed and just got off the practice field and felt great about his
movement so you know they’ve all really stayed focused and done the things they
need to do to be prepared. You know it doesn’t play any role you know you know we you know
we’ve played each other you know four times in two years so you know it’s it’s
it’s lovers it’s a Top Taggart it’s you know they win we win you know it’s just
a new season I think both both programs have really focused in on what’s at
stake rather than worrying about you know any kind of rivalry game I don’t
think really if they asked the players or the coaches you know both both
programs are looking for a W we don’t you know nobody cares more than that you
know looking to stay in the GLIAC race and potentially stay in you know in the
playoff race so those are really the two focal points I think both programs you
know speaking for us that’s definitely our focal point. You know it’s uh it’s still we got a
long ways to go you know you know we got three games after this so you know it
puts you in a good situation both of us have one loss in the regular season
you know both programs you know fought hard but you know you you feel a little
bit better if you get it get a W in this one obviously because you know then then
you’re three games away feeling like you got a pretty good shot at being the
playoffs with one loss but two losses we got in last year thank goodness and
we’re able to make a good run but you know you just you try to take it out of
you know other people’s hands and say you know we’re taking control over this
circumstance and that kind of control for both programs I’m sure is very
important to us. Conference race you know if we if we
don’t get a W on Saturday I would say that we’re probably out of the race you
know we’ll have two losses Grand Valley would have zero
Ashland would have zero assuming they win on Saturday so so from a conference
race perspective you know and you know you look at the two programs you know
last year they were the undefeated GLIAC champ two previous years we were you
know 14 and 15 we were undefeated GLIAC champs and so you know both of us made
decent playoff runs in the last couple years so uh you know we’re you know we
feel very good about what we’ve done here but we know how great they are as
well and so you know it’s it’s just all those things are at stake. Nothing, it doesn’t mean anything to me it means a lot to Ferris State and the alums and it means a lot to Grand Valleys alums I’m sure and and for West Michigan
people and and and for you know the people who played against each other you
know I just the other day we’re sitting in my office and Jahaan Brown you know
talking about Keyon Belcher and they’re like yeah we’ve been friends for a long
time you know and and so you know you got Collin Schlocher, Kyle short, Keyon
Belcher you know all West Michigan kids you know obviously we got Jahaan Brown
KC Zenner a multitude of West Michigan kids and you know I don’t mean
to leave anybody out but you know for those those things are really cool you
know and and for West Michigan to have two programs of this caliber I mean wow
I mean that’s incredible so you know people should be proud of what both
programs have achieved and and certainly feel you know a little bit of pride and
you know with our alums you know pride and what we’ve achieved and and enjoy
you know Saturday with the challenge of playing Grand Valley. Well you know I’ve got to protect my team and so
the biggest thing is protecting you know protecting Reggie and in that situation
you know I could wait till Saturday to announce on the starter I I don’t like
to play games so it’s not a it’s not a tactic by us at
all so you know I I just want to be forthright and so people can find out
now by watching the news here but you know I just didn’t know how you know if
you if you were to add cameras there on Tuesday you would have said oh my
goodness this kid can’t even run you know and and so any and he hadn’t he
hadn’t ran in you know four or five weeks obviously were tired in the weight
room and done a lot of things on the bike but he you know I just couldn’t
have a camera there you know with with all the things that go with that and so
that was you know just to protect my team and and so I think that’s most
important you know or our guys work awful hard and sometimes you got to do it.
