Football – Matt Luke Interview (9-11-19)

How’s Braylon doing? You know, good. I think it’s you
know, he’s day to day. He’s been running more,
which is a good thing. It’s a little bit different
than running straight ahead, then bursting and
changing speeds. So I think he’ll be
a game-time decision, but we’re certainly hopeful
that he’ll be able to play some. And have you been pleased with
practices this week? Good, It’s been good work. We talked a lot about you
know nothing stays the same. You either get better
or you get worse. And you know the focus
is to try to make the same jump we did from
you know week 2 to week 3 as we did from week 1 to week 2 and just continue to
build and get better. Because you know we’re
definitely a work in progress and we got to continue
to get better. And I think with a
inexperienced team every snap that you take
you have that opportunity to make that step
and get better. How have you seen the defense respond this week
without MoMo out there? Good you know I
felt like Jack West kind of picked up right
there and you know thankfully he had
played some last year, so he was able to
step into that role. And you know Ashanti
Cistrunk has got some reps and he’s practiced well
so I think you know and then having with
the able to sign Lakia I mean that’s a
huge that he’s here gives you a little
more depth there. [mumbles] opened up with kind of an upset win
over a nationally ranked team and then with the hurricane
canceling their game they actually had really
2 weeks to prepare. Yeah. What are your thoughts? Yeah, you know when you watch some of the those guys on tape they have a lot of speed and a lot of
weapons offensively, you know they have
probably maybe the fastest wide
out we’ve seen yet. They have a transfer
running back from Indiana that’s very capable, they have an experienced
senior quarter back that gets the ball out,
he’s very accurate. So offensively they are
explosive and dynamic and they’ll test us on
the perimeter for sure and then defense, they do a
lot of blitzing and moving. So we have a huge
challenge this week they’re going to attack us differently from
our defensive side and then offensively we’re
going to have to be sharp and make sure we you know are getting the ball to the
right spots at lane blitz. Have you ever
played Sam Williams for 2 games just
adjusting to the speed in this level of football? Yeah, I mean Sam is a a very talented player. And again, every
snap that he gets the experience he
gets he will continue to get better and better. But you know, he’s big,
he’s strong, he’s fast and he can make plays but I
think just that experience and getting those snaps
under his belt is very key. Have you ever coached
anyone like him, like 1 year you know
basketball player and 1 year high school football then he goes to Duke [mumbles] I think he’s in his 3rd 4th
season of actual football– You know you have people
at different positions it’s hard to compare you
know we had Stacy Andrews came out of the track
team, he played like 30 snaps and went to the NFL so you have abnormal
athletes like that that are just superior athletes he’s one of those guys that
could probably do about anything and just he’s a very
very good athlete and he makes plays and he
will continue to get better and I think Coach Nicks has done a good job of
simplifying it for him and making it easy and I think
he’s responded well of that.
