How to Intercept the Football : Go For the Football & Not the Player as a Cornerback

Hi, this is Sean Hobson, for Expert Village.
We want to talk about making interceptions, but we also want to make sure that when we
try to make the interception we don’t interfere with the player. One thing you cannot do is
try to intercept the ball going through the player. What I mean by that is if this receiver
is coming out and he stops and turns around to make the catch and the pass is coming,
I cannot come through this player to make the interception. I have to get around him
on either side and cheat that pass. That’s the one thing I cannot do. We both have a
right to get the ball but he has the right if he’s the inside position. I cannot come
and knock him out of the way in order to make that catch. Now we’ll show you what it looks
like in more game speed on a slant play. We’ll have the quarterback throw the ball to the
receiver and I’ll show you what you can’t do coming through to pick the pass off (video
demo). I cannot come through the receiver to pick that pass off. Even though I knew
where the pass was going I don’t have that right to come through the receiver to pick
that pass off. You want to make sure that you don’t create penalties while trying to
pick the ball off.

  1. Actually tackling the receiver is the main priority for a corner but if you have a chance to intercept the ball always take it
