How to Run Sweep Play in Football : How the Running Back Finishes a Football Sweep

Hi, this is Sean Hobson, for Expert Village.
What we want to talk about now is using our backs effectively once they come off the sweep
or the pitch and how they’re going to run up the field. When you’re running the sweep
or the pitch, the main thing we want is to get our running backs to the outside so they
can use their speed. When we say get to the outside, we mean to the outside of the tackle
box. Then we want to get it up field as quickly as we possibly can. (Video demo) We don’t
want our tailback to take the ball and run to the sideline trying to avoid a tackle and
end up taking a loss. We want him to come out here and avoid the contact but as soon
as he sees an opening he has to turn himself up the field and get north and south as quickly
as he possibly can instead of going east or west. So, it’s very important that when our
backs get the ball that they find the opening, they find the hole and then get through it.
You may even have to cut the ball back. But the one thing we don’t want to do is run so
wide that we end up losing yardage.
