In their own words: Three quarterbacks vie for the starting position at North Carolina

Yeah, I am just taking it day by day. I mean, that’s all I can do,
just compete with myself. I know I am competing with Sam and
Jace, but also just being the best player I can be,
that’s what I’m striving to be able to do. One thing for me, I had a lot
of anxiety coming into this and camp kinda was a thing for me to reset. I really got into my faith, and
I really just kind of relied on God and said, I have all these worries and
I’m gonna put it on you. And that just kind of
took all that away and I I just kind of focused on taking it day
by day and not worrying about tomorrow and not worrying about what’s going
to happen later in the season. Just trusting that God has a plan. I have a God given platform and
he’s given given me the abilities to play in college and
have all this stuff, and it would be a shame fighting if I didn’t
use my platform to spread his word. I think, for me, just being ready anytime,
just always being prepared, and just taking one step at a time,
taking one day at a time. Our tempo is way faster. The offense is more simple so
we can run it faster, we can get the O line up and
then don’t have as many calls. So I think the whole process of us
giving the signal, getting lined up, running the plays, all that’s faster. I think that’s gonna be to our
advantage this year, for sure.>>It’s actually great
because we’re all friends. That’s the good thing about it,
there’s no bad blood. Now, this is my second training camp, so
going in, I think it’s natural to have a little bit of anxiety, a little
nervousness just cuz there’s a lot on the line, I think, given the fact that
there’s three of us going for the job. But it’s been a blast. Coach Brown is very tough on us. Every throw does have an impact
on where we stand, and that makes us rise to
the level of the competition. So Coach Longo said, the three us,
we’re all even right now. We all have different games. We all bring different
things to the table. But, I mean, it’s just gonna come down to
the last-minute, just grind it out, and see who can be the most
productive on the field. I don’t try to think about the future. I think in this profession, you gotta take
it day-by-day, otherwise, you’re gonna catch yourself worrying about things
you don’t need to be worrying about. I love throwing the ball, I love running,
I love the personnel we have out front, the personnel we have offside, and then
the personnel we have in the backfield. It’s really well-rounded. I figured, joining the camp,
you can guys down. We need some some electricity to this
building so I figured, the mustache, the fu man chew might help a little bit.>>It’s been going good. We’re all competing hard, we’re making
each other better every single day. I’m happy with they way we’ve
progressed through camp. I’ve been here since January,
getting the rest of the team to practice. We have a really good defense so I’m getting better at going
against them every single day. By the time South Carolina game’s here,
I think I’ll be ready for it. No, it’s a friendly competition. At the end of the day, we’re all
trying to do what’s best for the team. We all just want to win football games,
no matter who’s playing out there. The guys respect me enough to where I can
say things and they respect what I say. I think the big thing, you just have
to earn the respect of the locker room. I think I’ve done a good job with that. I show up and just give this
team all I got every single day. I got to see that and they see me
working hard and they respect that. I think I can make all the throws
that need to be made and I think I can extend plays with my feet
when those plays need it [INAUDIBLE]. No, I thought this been probably since
maybe my sophomore year in high school. Yeah, and actually, it’s fine, people
actually called me Luke Maye before. I’ts like, hey, that’s just all.>>[LAUGH]
>>This is the football team in my state. I came here to play from
the school of my state, so I’m 100% on. [MUSIC]
