PREDICTIONS: Michigan State Spartans and Michigan Wolverines Football Season Opener

I’m Ryan Zuke with MLive.com and
college football in Michigan is back baby! Michigan and Michigan State are both ranked in the top 25 to begin the year. Let’s get right into the previews and predictions for their week-one matchups. Michigan State opens the year at 7 p.m. against Tulsa on Fox Sports 1. The Spartans will be returning one of the top defenses in the nation last year but
the biggest question mark heading into 2019, is their offense going to be able to
get up to par like they were in 2017? This should be a good opportunity for
Brian Lewerke to show that he’s healthy after battling a shoulder injury for
most of 2018. Let’s get into our beat writer predictions. None of us have Tulsa scoring more than a touchdown, with Matt Wenzel predicting a Michigan State victory 34 to 10. Kyle Austin has the Spartans coming out on top, 24 to 10. And I have them winning 27 to 13. Now let’s head over to the Big House where Michigan
opens up at 7:40 p.m. Saturday against Middle Tennessee State. Expectations are
as high as ever under Jim Harbaugh with the Wolverines being number seven in the
AP preseason poll. The biggest question will be, what does this new offense look like under Josh Gattis? He’s come over from Alabama and has implemented a new, up-tempo offense, which should make the Wolverines more explosive. We’ll get a
good look at what that looks like on Saturday. Now let’s get into the predictions. All of us have Michigan winning in a blowout, with Aaron McMann
predicting a 38 to 10 victory. Andrew Kahn has Michigan winning 42 to
13 and I have the Wolverines coming out on top 41 to 14. Thanks for watching. If you’re going to the game, have fun and we’ll see you next week.

  1. Tulsa's pass defense ranked #8 in the country last year and returns nine starters on defense. Run defense was trash though and no one has any idea how the QB race will end up, if Montgomery will go with last year's Seth Boomer or go with Baylor transfer Zach Smith.

    Good luck to both teams!
