Previewing Bridgewater Football’s 2018 Homecoming Game

we’re back with Bridgewater head
football coach Mike Clark coming off a 30 to 20 loss to Washington and Lee
certainly the bad news in that game was the team you know had a bit of a
disaster second quarter giving up 23 unanswered points but the good news was
they really came back and fought after halftime shut W&L out in the second half
scored twice in the third quarter and really made a game of it well I think
you’re playing a good football team and that’s football 101 we really can’t be
Santa Claus for six minutes in the second quarter and expect to make up
ground I thought our defense really had a pretty good a stout plan they executed
it fairly well but you know there were three explosion plays I don’t think
throughout the course of the game when W and L had to earn it they weren’t able to
you know we had the critical fourth down stops on our side of the 50
we got a goal-line stand right before the half but it was those big plays that
two-play drive set up a score and two or one play drives and the bottom line is –
from an offensive perspective we had two brutal turnovers in the second quarter
that led one led directly to points when they scooped it and scored then once set
up a one play drive off of play-action pass for a touchdown so you know that’s
football that’s seventh-grade football that’s NFL football and certainly that’s
Division three football I do agree with you I was really proud of our kids what
they were able to do at the second half of the 30-6 game there were a couple
critical situations there you know our defense to make a goal and stand right
before the half that was important I thought our offense – for us to return
their opening kickoff a hundred yards and have it get called back for a
penalty and you know our offense could have just walked out on the field and
said this isn’t our day the ball is on the 14 yard line they didn’t you know
they went 86 yards for a touchdown our defense one two three and out we got the
ball scored again and you know we’re kicking a field goal, a makeable
field goal in the fourth quarter to make it a one score game with nine minutes to
go and as I told the kids and they understand this now you take all our
last three games if we win we’re gonna be a win team that wins in the fourth
quarter the way our talent matches up with the people we’re not a team
that’s going to stretch people and this is the third week in a row our third
game in a row it was a fourth-quarter game we had to make a play and didn’t
quite get it done but we had also spotted them
some opportunities early in the game that it’s not a business where you
get back get things back yeah you had two different chances to make it a one
score game one on a two-point conversion and then the missed field goal that you
mentioned you also had two really long kick returns called back for penalties
so it did feel like just a game that you couldn’t quite get over the hump and
almost reminded me somewhat of last year at Hampton Sydney you had the same
situation ended up losing by ten you had a couple different chances to make it a
one score game seemed like you were trying to get some momentum and just
sort of came one play short from getting back over that hump yeah we did that but it
usually those things balance out youre right the kickoff return was a holding
call it was a good call with the 87 yard punt return it was a bad call they
brought that thing back and but I also think you know we’ve we’ve ID’d and
we’ve talked about too many times things that we need to improve on I think from
an offensive point of view we got to be better on the plus side of the field you
know this is a second week in a row where we we had great drives that turned
into early field goals and those come back to haunt you you know in big games
I think we have to be a touchdown team once we get on our side of the inside
our 30-yard line I’m real proud of Logan Weis you know it is he’s no longer a
backup kicker you know cams gonna be out for the
season so we’ve got a kicker that is five of six is pretty good but the
bottom line is I’d like to count on him kicking a few more extra points moving
forward here big challenge ahead here on Saturday and Hampton Sydney you talk
about prolific offenses over time you know they’re gonna score a lot of points
and they’re gonna put a lot of pressure on us defensively I think we have to
kick back into our guilford mode on the offensive side of the ball this is a
game that needs to be shortened I think our identity is pretty
established but I will say this when we play games and you look at the w&l game
each of us had in the low 60s on a play queue
that’s a program that’s a high school game playing at that pace and if that’s
what we’re gonna have to do to win we have to understand our margin for error
is gonna be slim on both sides of the ball you can’t give up those big plays
and and you got to earn some yourself and it’s a formula moving forward I look
forward to the challenge Saturday will bring Hampton Sydney coming off a
game shenandoah where each team only punted
once but you really handled that well against Guilford you know going down the
road you held the ball for 37 minutes there so is that the game plan again
that you need to control the ball yeah I think it is and hampden-sydney went on
the road last week their first drive they got stopped on fourth and two their
second drive they had an interception inside the 10-yard line and on their
third drive they were on about 35 went for it on fourth down and didn’t get it
so you know it was one of those deals were you know they were playing and they
were playing against really one of the great quarterbacks you know I’ve seen in
Division three who was hot as a pistol and it’s like that tennis match you know
him sitting he got up there and they were down 17 nothing and they weren’t
gonna catch up it was gonna be 17 at the end of the half way through the second
quarter and it was about 17 at the end of the game so it’ll be a big challenge
for us this has always been a great rivalry is as tough as it was last
weekend being around here on open break nobody was around as I told our kids
homecoming here is always a special event hampden-Sydney is a big rival for us I
still remember interviewing for this job not knowing anything about Bridgewater
and asking the people who’s our rival and they said well Hampden Sydney is our
big rival that’s the game we really want to win and remember looking a little
press guide at that time our record against hampden-sydney was three and forty nine when
we lost like 18 straight and I remember talking to the president at the time
Phil stone I said Phil we either better change some things or we better find a
new rival and fortunately we’ve been able to change some things and this has
just been a great game that I’m looking forward to playing now that being said
as I tell our kids everybody’s gonna want to play hard on Saturday we got to
make some good decisions here during the week to be prepared for Saturday we’re
gonna have to play very well to beat the teams on our schedule on hampden-sydney’s
one of them
