Raptor Report – Highlights of Day 2 of the NJCAA D3 Track & Field National Championships

20170512 Day 2 Track Nationals The weather was a little more cooperative
on Day 2 of the NJCAA D3 Track and Field Nationals at Howard County College, instead of an all
day rain like on Day 1, it only rained intermittently and it’s a good thing too, because the day
was chock full of prelims on the track with a few field finals mixed in for good measure. The big news of the day for Montgomery College
was Justina Ababio. The freshman more than surpassed her Day 1
forth place finish in the hammer by winning the National Championship in the Women’s Discus. Ababio, took first place in the nation with
a throw of 32 point 94 meters. Tomorrow she’ll try for another trip to the
podium in the shot. In Men’s Javelin, Donovan Tyler made the finals
and then took sixth place in the nation with a throw of 45 point 62 meters. Tomorrow he’ll also be trying for the podium
in the shot and discus. And in Men’s Long Jump, Justin Leonard who
was shuttling between the long jump pit and prepping and running a 200 prelim, came in
eighth in the nation with an outstanding jump of 6.26 meters. In addition to the finals, a bevy of prelims
were held on the track with MC sending a good sized contingent to the tomorrow’s finals. In the Men’s 100, Lud Blair won his heat in
11.14 to move into tomorrow’s final and then he doubled upfor tomorrow when he qualified
in the 200 with a time of 22.93. Ernest Long moved into the finals when he
finished second in his 800 heat with a time of 1:59;22. And on the women’s side, Kim Stamets advanced
to the finals of the 400 when she came in second in her heat with a time of 1:01;35. Alyssa Moran moved into the 100 meter finals
when she qualified with a time of 13.20 and then less than an hour later she also qualified
for the 200 meter final with a time of 26.85. And Katie Rose Turlick will be running in
tomorrow’s 800 meter final after posting a time of 2.35.35. So all in all an excellent day for MC at the
Nationals and tomorrow looks to be an even more exciting day with a ton of finals on
tap. For The Raptor Report, I’m Michael Brown
