SAMFORD’S 1971 FOOTBALL TEAM WON THE NCAA
COLLEGE DIVISION TWO WEST REGION CHAMPIONSHIP—BEATING OHIO WESLEYAN–CAPPING OFF A 9 AND 1 SEASON—THOSE
9 WINS TYING FOR THE SECOND HIGHEST TOTAL IN SCHOOL HISTORY. THE TEAM CLOSED OUT THE YEAR ON A ROLL—WINNING
SEVEN STRAIGHT GAMES—INCLUDING FOUR SHUT OUT VICTORIES. OUTSCORING OPPONENTS 223 TO 97—IT WAS SAMFORD’S
DEFENSE THAT WAS A STIFLING BUNCH…HOLDING TEAMS TO UNDER 10 POINTS AND LESS THAN 90
YARDS PER GAME. THE TEAM FINISHED RANKED 7TH IN THE NATIONAL
UPI POLL IN IT’S FIRST SEASON AS AN NCAA MEMBER. PASTOR BILLY GRAHAM ONCE SAID, “A COACH
WILL IMPACT MORE PEOPLE IN ONE YEAR THAN THE AVERAGE PERSON WILL IN AN ENTIRE LIFETIME.” WELL, AT LEAST 18 MEMBERS OF THE 1971 TEAM
WENT ON TO BECOME HIGH SCHOOL COACHES. AN ESTIMATED 340 YEARS OF COACHING PRODUCED
AT LEAST 8 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS, TWENTY-FIVE HUNDRED WINS AND MORE IMPORTANTLY… THESE MEN INFLUENCED AND GUIDED APPROXIMATELY
10 THOUSAND HIGH SCHOOL PLAYERS AT A TIME IN THEIR LIVES WHEN THEY NEEDED IT MOST. THE 1971 FOOTBALL TEAM…ONE OF SAMFORD’S
BEST—AND NOW A MEMBER OF THE SAMFORD ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME.
