Solskjaer hints that Fosu Mensah could replace Ashley Young’s minutes at right back

Manchester United’s sale of Ashley Young
to Inter Milan is all-but-confirmed, with the veteran full-back pictured arriving in
the Italian capital just earlier today. The job for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is finding
a suitable replacement – be it someone already at the club or via dipping his toes into the
transfer market. Anyway, the Baby Faced Assassin held his usual
pre-match press conference this afternoon, with Solskjaer addressing the issue of who’ll
replace his former captain. The Norweigan mentioned the right-back position
in particular, hinting that 22-year-old Timothy Fosu-Mensah could take Young’s minutes upon
his return from injury. When asked about who’s going to replace
Young, Solskjaer responded: “Timothy (Fosu-Mensah) is coming back as
well and he’s a right-back, he’s played for Holland as a right-back at the age of
19, so we also want him back. Diogo is back fit, so in the full-back position
I think we’re quite OK.” per ManUtd.com. It’s easy to forget just how talented Fosu-Mensah
was (is?). During his debut season under Louis van Gaal,
the Dutchman was regarded as one of the best up-and-comers on the books at Old Trafford. Injuries definitely haven’t helped his case,
though Fosu-Mensah could be a solid option as our utility man. Don’t forget he can play at full-back, centre-half
and defensive-midfield if needs be. As Ole mentions, Diogo Dalot is another choice
so the depth is there. The problem is, both of these guys are susceptible
to injury so letting Young go has to be regarded as a gamble. It’s certainly going to be interesting to
see how this one plays out, though I’ll be surprised if we see Fosu-Mensah playing
with regularity for United before the 2020/21 term…
