What are the origins of Tottenham Hotspur? Local schoolboys were playing for Hotspur
Cricket Club established in 1880. The club’s activities extended to football in the winter
and Hotspur FC were born in 1882. However, they were not the only Hotspur in London so
they added the name of the local area to become Tottenham Hotspur. They played football close
to land owned by the Northumberland family, descendants of the knight Sir Henry Percy.
He was known for leading fierce charges in battle, digging his spurs into his horse for
extra speed. Such heated spurs led to the nickname “Harry Hotspur” and this was
seen as a suitable name for the club, leading us to the nickname “Spurs”. That’s the club’s history. But are Spurs
