What if Brexit was Football? | S1 • E1

What if Brexit was football? Which team would win? Which team would lose? And more importantly, who would you support? If Brexit was football, it would be the biggest Derby the UK’s ever seen. Derby games often provoke the emotional, cultural… …and historical backgrounds of the two teams, not quite unlike Brexit. Genuine competitiveness makes the comparisons to Brexit even more striking. Brexit like any other football derby,… …has captivated the entire nation… …and has almost certainly split the country in half. Now, we could easily dissect the 2016 referendum data for you,… …for example, votes by area,… …age groups… …and even political affiliations. But that’s already been overdone. We believe Brexit is much more than the data and the numbers. It’s a passionate rivalry between two contrasting sides. Now we’ve had all the debates,… …the so-called experts,… …pundits, commentators, rants, chants and the slogans. But this Derby’s a lot more dynamic than that. However, to be able to truly understand the nature of this ideological rivalry… …we need to look at 3 things. History and Origins Philosophy and Strategy Goals This rivalry goes all the way back to the 70s… …and Remain United have enjoyed all the glory ever since,… …holding the title of the biggest club. But they have seemed to have gotten used to not having any rivals… …or real competition. Over the last 40 years,… …Euro-skepticism has been growing… …and the benefits of being in the EU… …have only made sense for fewer and fewer people. On the 23rd of June, 2016, everything changed. And in one of the biggest shocks to mainstream media,… …the establishment and the EU itself,… …the UK decided to leave,… …turning Euro-skepticism from a small time underdog Sunday league team… …into a worthy contender. Patriotism was no longer reserved for world cups. The UK finally had a day in which its independence… …will forever be remembered. While both boardrooms faced fines for unclaimed expenses,… …this is not the only reason for shocking performances on the pitch. While one side greatly underestimated their opponents… …and tried to generalise their supporters’ motives,… …the other side struggled to distance itself… …from so-called Bad Brexit stigma. This affected on pitch performances. F.C. Independent Britain went with a solid 4-4-2,… …but players not willing to acknowledge each other… …weakened their strategy. As for Remain United, they went for a 4-3-3,… …but having a spearhead formation with no one to lead… …led to their downfall. The goals of Brexit are very black and white. Each side is trying to achieve the exact opposite of each other… …which makes this phenomenon even more epic. And just like football,… …there’s no feeling quite like a victory in a derby match… …against your nearest and most-hated opponents. This battle over contrasting styles… …has been going on for more than 3 years and seems never-ending. This was not an easy video to make as even here at Hypoethical,… …we have Leavers until they die… …and Remainers until the end. The way we settled our differences is through Brexit Fantasy,… …our Brexit starting eleven. While we never entirely agreed on this,… …what we could agree on… …is that Brexit wouldn’t be the same without these characters. Disagree? Let us know your starting eleven in the comments below. Brexit hasn’t been the prettiest of games at times,… …from biased commentary and aggressive lobbying… …to fear mongering and evil chanting. Despite the differences of both sides,… …Brexit is essentially two things. It’s British due to the fact that no other country… …has tried to leave the European Union before,… …and it’s beautiful because so many discussions and disputes… …on policies and legislations have been reduced to one question;… In or Out? Brexit has turned politicians into sport stars,… …re-captivating young people’s interest… …and rejuvenating politics from the boring and benign… …to something that has dominated our conversations… …for the past 3 years.
